Last week Microsoft held it’s annual Microsoft Global Exchange sales conference. Of the 12,000 attendees a vast majority managed to not tweet, record, blog, or other leak information to those outside the company. The one leak that did come out of the conference is a video poking fun at Gmail while extolling the virtues of Office 365. Well, actually, a majority of the video is just poking fun at Gmail bookended by messages to use Office 365. Microsoft decided to highlight the advertising part of Gmail as a major downside. The video is focused on the fact that Gmail will… Full Story » | Written by Shawn Ingram for . | Comment on this Article »
Porn is something you wouldn't think a cable company CEO would talk about. Even though porn brings in a lot of extra dollars, it's one of those things that is too taboo for a lot of people. Interestingly enough, Time Warner's CEO Glen Britt mentioned the demand (or lack thereof) for porn when discussing his company's video on demand service during the companies Q2 2011 earnings conference call. Britt responded to a question regarding the decline in Time Warner's video on demand service. He was asked if Netflix growth was somehow responsible for the drop in video on demand revenue.… Full Story » | Written by Jeremy Hill for . | Comment on this Article »
When most people are looking for a hotel, they rely on the user views from sites like Trip Advisor, Travelocity, and Expedia. Unfortunately, the reviews are not always what they seem, despite the strict rules against it most sites have, it's not unusual for hotels to post fake negative reviews for competitors or for them to post fake positive reviews to combat negative ones. That may be much more difficult now thanks to Cornell University. Researchers there have developed software that can spot fake reviews by using a set of specific parameters including speech and punctuation. Truthful reviews tend to… Full Story » | Written by Sue Walsh for . | Comment on this Article »
According to Hitwise, Google+‘s traffic has fallen by 3% and the average time users spend there has fallen by 10%. It’s possible this is due to the release of the mobile app, which isn’t tracked, but honestly, I’m not surprised at all. I’m on Google+ and while I like it, it’s very quiet. Since Google insists on keeping it invite only, the majority of the public is shut out. This means most folks don’t have all that many friends there, at least not compared to say, Facebook. I’ve also discovered that most people really aren’t interested. I have close to… Full Story » | Written by Sue Walsh for . | Comment on this Article »

The House Judicial Committee has voted to approve a law that would require all ISP's to retain customer IP data for 12 months. The law, called the Protect Children from Internet Pornographers Act, would allow law enforcement to gain access to such data with just a subpoena rather than a court ordered warrant. The majority of House Democrats voted against the bill and the majority of House Republicans voted for it. "The bill is an outrageous expansion of the power of the federal government,” said Representative Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat. House Democrats are worried that that allowing such relatively… Full Story » | Written by Sue Walsh for . | Comment on this Article »

Throttling data speeds is nothing new. Just about all the major carriers are doing it. As smartphones penetration increases, carriers need a way to manage all the bandwidth that's being sucked up by those phones. If they don't, connection speeds will slow to a crawl. AT&T has had network congestion problems for a long time and it'll probably get worse once the new iPhone arrives. To remedy that, AT&T is rumored to start slowing data speeds for some of its more data hungry users. 9to5Mac expects AT&T to implement this regulation at the beginning of October. There's no solid proof… Full Story » | Written by Jeremy Hill for . | Comment on this Article »

And well, based on sales from this quarter and the previous quarter, it looks like Motorola has sold nearly 700,000 tablets in all. The numbers break down as approximately 250,000 coming from Q1 and another 440,00 coming from Q2. We’ve heard a lot about a possible new design for the next iPhone, but all we’ve seen so far are rumors and cases. Now we have what could be an actual image of the next iPhone. The image you see above comes from 9to5Mac, and shows a possible new iPhone out in the wild. The phone certainly doesn’t look like the current iPhone 4, and actually seems to somewhat resemble the iPhone 3G and 3GS. It looks to be a bit thinner, however, and the person who sent the photo to 9to5Mac claims that it would fit perfectly into the… Full Story » | Written by Shawn Ingram for . | Comment on this Article »

Software that allows you to remotely unlock/start your vehicle via cell phones is currently susceptible to hacks, even from thousands of miles away. The hack, developed by iSec researchers Don Bailey and Matthew Solnik, functions by reverse engineering the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology. With the technique Bailey and Solnik dubbed “war texting,” the two men were able to figure out the codes needed to send rogue commands to specific vehicles. This was achieved through the use of a laptop which was implemented to recreate the messages. “When we looked at this car security and control system we… Full Story » | Written by Tarun Kunwar for . | Comment on this Article »
We have not seen all that much in terms of Google Music related chatter since the initial launch, which may have been because the service is still by invite only and existing users were not able to dish out any invites. That being said, it looks like Google is ready to start allowing more users into the service and current users should now see the option to “Invite A Friend” when they login to their account. The invites, of which it looks like all current users have two, can be found in top left corner just below the Music Beta… Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for . | Comment on this Article »
Starting today, Twitter will begin to push Promoted Tweets (also known as ad Tweets) to its users. This is Twitter's attempt to earn more revenue for the company. Promoted Tweets will appear in specific user's timelines when they visit Twitter.com. Like we said in an earlier report, Promoted Tweets aren't that bad. If you don't follow any companies or brands on Twitter, you won't see any Promoted Tweets. Furthermore, if you access Twitter from anywhere other than the main site, you won't see those tweets either. The tweets will appear close to the top of your timeline after logging in.… Full Story » | Written by Jeremy Hill for . | Comment on this Article »
