Microsoft Launches Into Cloud Race With Office 365
Much is riding on Microsoft's Office 365, which launched June 28. If Office 365 succeeds with businesses and consumers, it'll help validate the company's choice of an "all in" cloud strategy. If the platform fails, it'll provide an opening for other cloud-software producers--most notably Google, which already offers a cloud-productivity platform with Google Apps.

Building an Efficient Test / Development Management Process
Jul 21, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern / 12:00 p.m. Pacific (60 minutes)
Many companies have virtualized their test and development environments as a first foray into virtualization. But even on this small scale, some of the challenges of managing virtual infrastructures become evident. Manual provisioning processes can delay the delivery of virtual machines to developers. Developers may oversize their requirements just to save time, which results in VM sprawl as test/dev machines are abandoned and forgotten.

Google provides five pre-made templates that business owners can use to create their pages quickly. Google claims everything can be done in a matter of minutes. It's also possible to design one-of-a-kind templates for a business if they’re trying to stand out from the crowd. Google also provides…

Appointments in the ER?  InQuickER goes beyond simple ER wait times

Just about every parent goes through the agony of bringing a child to the ER for something that isn’t life threatening.  Many hospitals around the country are thankfully showing their ER wait times so these parents can know about how long this trip is going to last.  One hospital is going a bit further, making appointments online for the ER. Lakewood Regional Medical Center has seen its ER become busier thanks to the weakening economy: folks out of work use the ER as their primary medical provider while many area ERs have closed down.  Their solution is InQuickER, a service…

Google rolling out some updates, said to be "evolving the Google design and experience"

Google may have unveiled Google+ yesterday, however that is not they only change and/or addition they have begun rolling out. Granted, this next one may not be quite as exciting, however an updated look and feel can sometimes be a welcomed change. That said, as you can likely see from the above image, things have changed a bit on the Google Search homepage. And for those who prefer things to be spelled out, the changes include the black bar across the top as well as a smaller logo and links having been moved to the bottom of the page. According…

Microsoft to roll-out 'Tango" and then 'Apollo' updates for WP7 following 'Mango'

While most of the recent Windows Phone news is surrounding the upcoming Mango update, it looks like Microsoft may be hard at work prepping some of the future updates. And coming in line nicely after, will be updates that are codenamed “Tango” and “Apollo.” Of course, while we have some interesting sounding names, we are not yet clued in as to what either are expected to bring. That being said, the one nice part about this is that is leads one to believe Microsoft is hard at work and will be releasing a few quicker updates and hopefully making a…

AT&T officially announces the HTC Status, pricing and availability forthcoming

Earlier today, we saw two clear images of the AT&T branded HTC Status, and prior to that, there have been numerous leaks and reports about the HTC Status launching soon with AT&T.  Today, AT&T made the first Facebook phone from HTC official by launching the Facebook product page for the Status.  It is only appropriate that a phone with deep Facebook integration be given a Facebook page right away.  While we don’t have the official word on pricing or availability at this time, AT&T will most likely launch the Status this summer, and since it’s a mid-range device, the price…

Report: Apple to sell the iPhone 3GS for free

When Apple refreshes the iPhone, usually one model gets discontinued and the other model receives a hefty price cut to make space for the new full-priced iPhone.  However, when the iPhone 5 (or at least the next iteration of iPhone) launches, some analysts believe that Apple will want to get into the free smartphone industry.  More specifically, Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital believes that the launch of the iPhone 5 will mark the disappearance of the iPhone 3GS’ price tag.  The iPhone 4, at the time of the launch, will be marked down to $99, and the iPhone 3GS will…

AT&T branded HTC Status gets pictured

Look, we already knew that AT&T was planning to launch the HTC ChaCha as the HTC Status, however if there was any doubt—there are now two in-the-wild style images of the handset circulating the web. The pics, as you can see above, show a nice clear look at the front and back. That said, the white and silver does have a nice styling, however we cannot help but think the black model that Telus is launching is a bit more rough and tough looking. Nonetheless, we may have seen the images, however we still need something a bit more official…

Yesterday, HTC announced that the EVO 3D would launch in Europe sometime in July, but the press release made no specific mention to carriers or pricing.  Fortunately, however, Vodaphone UK published a product page for the upcoming HTC EVO 3D, but did not reveal a launch date for the 3D smartphone.  If you take a look at the image above, you’ll see the words “Coming soon” written above a button where you can register for updates.  Since we still don’t know about pricing or availability from Vodaphone UK, it may be worthwhile to register for updates so at least you…

MoviePass brings monthly subscriptions to theater goers

We're getting used to the idea of paying for monthly subscriptions for media we enjoy on a daily basis. Netflix is the obvious choice, but music services such as Slacker Radio and Rdio are also seeing increased membership as time goes on. Services such as these may not have seemed realistic a decade ago, but now it's hard to image how we ever got along without them. MoviePass is using that same method, but is applying it to movies that are still in theaters. MoviePass is starting its operations in San Francisco before spreading its influence across the United States…

RIM reportedly scraps 10 inch BlackBerry PlayBook plans, focuses on BlackBerry superphone instead

Sure, the seven inch BlackBerry PlayBook gets the job done for some users, but there is definitely a market out there who prefers a large screen realestate in order to enjoy the functions of a tablet.  RIM has been expected to deliver a ten inch rendition of the BlackBerry PlayBook, but it looks like the Canadian manufacturer will forgo the ten inch tablet in favor of a new “superphone” based on QNX.  The specs of the purported RIM superphone include a single-core 1.2GHz processor, a 4.3 inch HD touch screen display, and will be QNX based.  Unfortunately, we don’t know…

Google+ gives users more control over their social lives on the web

Google has announced a few more social services that are currently undergoing field trials. The network of services is called Google+ and its aim is to make social networking a little more structured. Google recognizes that it can be difficult to be completely open on social networks because of the different types of relationships we tend to have with online "friends." Sometimes we may want to say something on a social network, but we don't feel comfortable with everybody reading it. For example, some of us are Facebook friends with our parents. Sometimes, we want to say things that our…
