Blockbuster attempts to scoop up angry Netflix customers

Blockbuster didn't waste any time in its attempt to capitalize on the anger a lot of Netflix customers are experiencing right now. Ever since Netflix announced it would be splitting its unlimited streaming and DVD rental combo subscription into two $7.99 a month offerings, many customers are contemplating cancelling at least one of their Netflix subscriptions. Blockbuster has now swooped in to give fleeing Netflix subscribers a deal on its Blockbuster Total Access service. For starters, Blockbuster is giving former Netflix customers a 30-day free trial of Blockbuster Total Access. Following the free trial, customers will be charged $9.99 a…

Microsoft accidently reveals new social project

Microsoft accidentally posted information on a web site detailing a new service called Tulalip. By definition, Tulalip is the name of a Native American group that is located in Washington. Microsoft is also headquartered in Washington, so Tulalip could just be a codename for the service. Before the site was (Socl.com) pulled, Fusible discovered Tulalip was described on the page as something that will help you "find what you need and Share what you know easier than ever." Once word of the site started to spread, Microsoft removed the page and replaced it with a placeholder message. The message reads:…

4G LTE smartphones on Verizon will not be compatible with AT&T's 4G LTE network, says VZW rep

Imagine you could take your Samsung Droid Charge and access AT&T’s 4G LTE network at will; or you could take the Motorola Atrix 4G and surf the web using Verizon’s 4G LTE network.  Unfortunately, that hypothetical scenario may never come to fruition, well at least not in the immediate future.  PCMag recently reached out to Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney regarding the possibility of using a Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone on AT&T’s up and coming 4G LTE network.  Her response was simple: it will not work because of the difference in bands used by each carrier.  In simple terms,…

Mid-range Samsung Admire tipped for launch with MetroPCS

According to a few new leaked pictures, MetroPCS is reportedly preparing to launch a new mid-range Android device from Samsung dubbed the Admire.  As of now, we know that the Admire will run Android 2.3, feature a 3.5 inch touch screen display, 3.2MP rear facing camera, 800MHz processor, 3G connectivity, WiFi, GPS, and TouchWiz.  It’s a disappointment that the Admire won’t support MetroPCS’ 4G LTE network and its processor should at least be 1GHz in my opinion.  However, having only 3G support and a lower-grade processor will definitely help keep the cost down as MetroPCS is expected to launch the…

Search engines might be affecting our memory

In a recent series of experiments conducted by Columbia University psychologist Betsy Sparrow and her colleagues, evidence suggested that people are more likely to remember things they believe cannot be found online and in turn have a harder time remembering the things they think they will be able to find online. The study also found that we are more likely to remember exactly where to find information on the web than remembering the information itself. "Since the advent of search engines, we are reorganizing the way we remember things," Sparrow said in a news release. "Our brains rely on the…

Shields Up:Times are Tough for Spammers Too

A new study by Cisco Systems has found that even spammers are facing some tougheconomic times. It's estimated that they'll rake in about $300 million this year. That may sound like a lot until you realize they raked in over a billion dollars last year! The company's researchers say this is probably due largely to the shutdown or disruption of quite a few major botnets including Conflicker, Waledec, Rustock and Coreflood. Increased attention from law enforcement may also be a factor. One can assume that improvements in spam filters, blacklists, and end user education may also be factors, along with…

Google+ is 10 million users strong

It seems that the best way to have virtually guaranteed high demand for a service is to dangle it above the public's head like a carrot. Google+ now has 10 million users. Can you believe that? The service hasn't been out for a month, nor is it available to everyone just yet. As of now, Google+ is a resounding success. Of those 10 million users, a lot of them are most likely real people. Google has been stern about not allowing businesses to make user profiles. Google will also suspend an account if doesn't believe the user is listing their…

Google+ for Android updated, offers more control over your stream

On the same day Google announced a whopping 10 million users for Google+ and 550,000 Android device activations per day, the Google+ Android app got updated. This update fixes one of the main issues I personally had with the application. You can now choose to display posts from specific circles instead of using a single stream to display everything. A lot of the other features deal with Huddles. You now have the option of choosing who can start a Huddle with you. You can choose from people in your circles, extended circles or anyone on Google+. If you get an…

Amazon intentionally cutting back tablet specs to better compete with competitors

For Amazon, creating a tablet wasn't as simple as jumping into the marketplace. Apple has dominated that space from the beginning and every attempt by a competitor has failed to live up to the high standard Apple has created. Make no mistake, Amazon firmly has the iPad in mind when designing its still unannounced tablet(s). According to New York Times sources, Amazon is hoping that a lower price will help its tablet gain traction where most others have failed. Amazon apparently is cutting back on the features its tablet will have. Allegedly, the tablet doesn't even have a camera. Some…

Sprint ditched the mail-in-rebates in favor of instant discounts a few months back and well, it looks like they are soon going to be making a switch back. Yup, the latest in the Sprint rumor mill suggests that the mail-in rebates will be returning for “select devices” beginning on July 24th. According to the details coming from the leaked Sprint document; “Effective 7/24/11, mail-in rebates are back (sorry, not all instants anymore), and the sprint mail-in rebate (MIR) program will move from checks to the American Express Prepaid Reward Card as the method of payment.” And lastly, while we wait…

Spotify launches in the US, manages to do so with a webOS app

While we suspect that our friends overseas have had this app available for sometime now, it looks like Spotify planned ahead in terms of the US launch and managed to do so with not only an Android and iOS app, but also with a webOS app. Yup, Spotify for webOS is currently available for download (for US users) in the App Catalog. And just like the other mobile Spotify apps, it is free to download but requires a Premium account for use. Needless to say, this makes Spotify that much more appealing for this multi-platform using mobile geek. That said,…

LG adds two new Android smartphones to its summer release catalog

Today LG announced a couple new Android smartphones that will be coming to unknown carriers this summer. The phones are called the LG Optimus Pro and the LG Optimus Net. These two phones will be available in Europe first before making their way to the United States and other markets in China, Brazil and Asia. These aren't superphones we're talking about, although they both are powered by Android 2.3. The LG Optimus Pro is reminiscent of a BlackBerry in design. It's a candybar phone with a QWERTY keyboard and a 2.8-inch touchscreen. This phone seems more suited for business-types due…

Sprint drops the price on the Nexus S 4G, now only $99.99 on a 2-year agreement

Hey look, Sprint has dropped the price on the Nexus S 4G smartphone. Or maybe a bit more accurately, they have cut the purchase price in half since it was originally released. And while we think that is a fairly solid deal, we also cannot but remember that some third party wireless retailers such as Wirefly were already selling the handset for $99.99 way back in May. Needless to say, if you are in the market for a new phone with Sprint and were thinking about going with Android and somehow scared to purchase with someone other than direct with…

GoogleMinus notifies you of Circle removals

There is another browser extension on the web that delivers an unofficial feature to Google+. Unlike the others we've talked about, this extension has nothing to do with Facebook. It's called GoogleMinus and it serves only one purpose - ratting you out to members of your so-called Circles. GoogleMinus alerts you whenever someone removes you from a Circle. Google+ only officially lets you know when someone adds you to a circle. I don't really know how an extension like this could be seen as positive. All it's doing is letting you know you're not interesting enough for someone else to…

Interesting advertising: Best Buy shows off the Android 3.0 running HP TouchPad

This is a pretty clear fail on the part of the Best Buy advertising team, however we cannot help but wonder—Would the TouchPad have been a more successful device if it really was running Android 3.0 Honeycomb? The funny part here, they touted the Android part in the highlight, but managed to get the webOS portion in towards the right of the tablet.Via [PreCentral]
