Google won't allow aliases for Google+ profile names

Google recently announced that businesses are not allowed to create Google+ profiles to promote their goods and services. Companies that don't abide by this rule will risk getting their page deleted. Likewise, Google wants everyone who signs up for Google+ to use their real names as the primary name on their Google Profile. Failure to do so could result in an account suspension. This was discovered by New World Notes who asked a Google spokesperson for details regarding a suspended account. Someone created a Google+ account using the name "Opensource Obscure" as their primary Google Profile name. Their profile was…

Android 2.3 officially rolling out to HTC Droid Incredible 2 users

Last Friday, we learned that Verizon Wireless was planning to launch Android 2.3 on their HTC Droid Incredible 2 based on the fact that documentation for the software change had already been published.  The document did not release the launch date for the Gingerbread upgrade, but reports of users’ Droid Incredible 2 receiving the update this morning have been trickling in.  The update is 116MB in length and will presumably take up a decent amount of time to download (especially if you do it over 3G as opposed to WiFi).  In case the update notification hasn’t hit your handset just…

Real World Tech: Smartphone GPS saved my skin

Welcome to Gadgetell’s newest series, Real World Tech.  In these posts, we’ll look at how everyday people use gadgets in the real world.  The idea is to go beyond the pretty product photos and feature-laden specs to see how it works in the real world.  Here’s my story. Most smartphones today have GPS.  The Global Positioning System chip in today’s smartphones locate a user within about 15-10 meters, sometimes better but at worst, 10-15 meters.  I’ve oft shook my head in amazement on how my iPhone can pinpoint my location down to the part of the house I am in. …

Thanks Netflix, you just saved me $2 per month

Sure, its only $2 each month, which in the whole scheme of things is not much for my bottom line at the end of the month. But on the flip side, I suspect Netflix had many customers like myself—subscribers who have/had the $9.99 per month account with unlimited streaming and unlimited (one out at a time) DVD by mail rentals. And in that respect, the $2 per month per user could add up to quite a bit. Needless to say, the users-like-myself comment was aimed at the fact that I have had a DVD sitting on my desk for a…

Barnes & Noble Nook Color moves into number one in the ereader market

A new report coming from IDC is showing that the Barnes & Noble Nook Color is now more popular as compared to the Amazon Kindle. For eBooks, Barnes & Noble's Color Nook helped the company to take the lead in the eReader market for the first time. Amazon's Kindle was second, but the lack of a color offering has clearly impacted the company's previous dominance in the eReader market. Could this be a hint that suggests users really want a color displayed ereader? Maybe, maybe not. Me personally, I like reading on the 7 inch Galaxy Tab given the color…

The reason why Netflix decided to raise prices

Netflix has been causing some bitter feelings lately among its customers. First Netflix redesigned its website much to the dismay of its users. Now they've dropped another bomb by announcing that it will eliminate the DVD rental and streaming combo subscription. Starting in September (for existing subscribers), customers who want both services will pay $15.98 a month. That's an increase of about 60%. So why did Netflix decide to do this? Basically, Netflix underestimated the power of its DVD business. A while ago, Netflix started to de-emphasize its DVD service in favor of its streaming service. It all made sense…

BlackBerry Bold 9900 makes an FCC appearance, shows off its support for NFC

RIM made the official announcement back in early May, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 (and the 9930) would be coming to the US later in the year. And while we also were told that it would not be arriving until September, we are still waiting on an official announcement from a carrier. That being said, it looks like another hurdle of the release has been crossed—the FCC filing. Of course, this does not tell us exactly when or how much the handset will be selling for, however it did show off a device with support for Near Field Communications (NFC) as…

South Korean consumers can shop for groceries using QR codes

Shopping for groceries is not always a great experience. We have to deal with crowds, long lines and tedious the process of taking all that food into that house. Love it or hate it, technology has a way of making us lazy. It also can make everyday tasks much more convenient. Take Tesco customers in South Korea for example. Tesco has created a way for them to buy groceries without needing to visit the store. Tesco plastered the walls of a South Korean subway with photos of grocery items they would find in its stores. The items have QR codes…

Rumor: Netflix will raise its prices [Update]

As far as rumors go, you can take this one with as much salt as you'd like. Yesterday we told you about a new $7.99 Netflix subscription that offers unlimited DVD rentals for a full month. At the time, this new plan seemed reasonable. It's the same amount Netflix charges for unlimited streaming. Today, a new rumor says Netflix will increase the monthly price for those who want to stream and rent movies at the same time. Netflix currently charges $9.99 for unlimited rentals and streaming. Some movies and TV shows simply aren't offered through instant streaming, so renting a…

Updated version of Honeycomb will make resized applications look better

Part of an app's transition from a smartphone to a tablet involves optimizing it for use on a large screen. Some apps look great on screens that are 3-4 inches, but they may look pixelated and gross when blown up to screens that are 7-10 inches. Every tablet operating system has to deal with this. In Android's case, Google is working on something that will make apps that aren't optimized for tablets look better on tablet screens. An upcoming update to Android's Honeycomb OS will bring a new screen compatibility mode to some applications. Google is giving developers the option…

Spotify tipped to launch as an invitation only service [Things we believe will happen]

Another little bit of Spotify related chatter. This latest is dealing with a report that suggests the service will launch as invitation only when it finally comes available here in the US. And well, while we have nothing concrete to prove that theory, here is why we believe it to be accurate. First, the obvious, Spotify posted about the upcoming US launch on their website a few days back and did so with an orange box which asked for your email address so you could get an invitation and “be one of the first to get Spotify.” To us here…

How Google+ will Split-up your Social Life

With all the buzz surrounding Google+ these days, it’s good to take a step back and assess how this new social network will affect our daily online habits. Throwing a new social platform into the mix that has a backing the likes of Gmail, Gchat, YouTube and the most used search engine around will surely help sway users away from Zuckerberg and co. And just how many of you have considered deleting your Facebook account at some point? A good portion of Facebook users (at least in my experience) seem to be uncomfortable sharing their personal information and status updates…

Google+ invites no longer a requirement as Google opens the doors for anyone wanting in [Update]

A quick check on the Google+ website is now showing a service that is open for any and all that want to get in. Well, for any and all as long as they are using Gmail as their email provider. Bottom line here, Google is no longer requiring users to be invited into Google+ which means the “invite people to join Google+” portion that is likely still in your account is no longer necessary. Kind of like how you can still invite people to use Gmail. But invites aside, lets see how adopted Google+ will be now that anyone can…
