Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones The Windows Phone 7 HTC HD7 on T-Mobile has recently been given an attractive and competitive price cut. Previously, it sold for $199 but now it is down to $99, a price that similarly matches the WP7 devices on AT&T. However, the HTC HD7 is a slightly better smartphone as it features a 4.3 inch touch screen, so you may want to go with this device if you are looking to pick up any WP7 smartphone. Other specs include 16GB of onboard storage, 720p video recording, 5MP camera, 1GHz processor, WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. Section: Web, Websites I am a long time Flickr user, so much so that I was in the group that was forced to transition from my original Flickr username to logging in with a Yahoo! ID. Needless to say, that was not the best day for Flickr in the eyes of many, but thankfully changes have come and are still coming to the Flickr login process and the latest is with Facebook. Yup, users can now login to their Flickr account with their Facebook login credentials. And while some may have issue with using a Facebook login on Flickr, it somehow feels nicer for me. That said, there is also the option to login with your Google account, and just for those wondering, the Google login process was introduced last year. Furthermore, those who choose to login using their Facebook or Google credentials will be able to start sharing their public photo uploads to Facebook, which can be setup by visiting your settings page in Flickr. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile Since AT&T have started offering MicroCells to customers with poor in-home reception we’ve heard stories of those who managed to get freebies by complaining loudly enough. Now it looks like AT&T will start offering free MicroCells to select customers next week. Starting January 23, the “top 7.5 percent of 3G wireless customers identified as likely to experience poor in-building coverage at home or in small offices” will be offered free MicroCells by AT&T. They won’t just be shipped the devices out of the blue, instead AT&T will send them a code in the mail to bring to an AT&T store. The code wil be redeemed for a free MicroCell, provided the customer agrees to a one-year contract on the device. So, if you get the MicroCell and leave AT&T within that year, you’ll have to either return the MicroCell or pay $199.99 minus $16.67 per month you had it. Not a bad deal at all. Presumably those who receive the MicroCell will be those who have routinely called AT&T about reception problems. Again this is probably all in response to Verizon getting the iPhone. If it is, it’s not a terrible plan, since those with the most problems with AT&T are probably the most likely to switch. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones The HTC EVO Shift 4G represents a high-end smartphone priced comparable to a mid-range device. Sprint initially launched the device with a price tag of $150, but Amazon has already lowered the price significantly to $89.99. For a smartphone with 4G capability, this is definitely one of the lower prices I’ve seen, besting all the 4G smartphones on Sprint and slightly edging the T-Mobile myTouch 4G which is currently available for $99. If you plan on purchasing a new smartphone on any carrier, it is always better to check with third party retailers such as Amazon to see if you can find a lower price. Again, the HTC EVO Shift 4G can be yours with a two year agreement on Sprint for $89.99. Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Reviews, Features, Originals Last month, Coby unveiled its Kyros 7015-4G MID (Mobile Internet Device). The tablet sports a 7" screen, runs Android 2.1, is WiFi enabled and sports an HDMI port and a MicroSD slot in addition to its 4GB of internal memory. While it's gotten a bad rap but some, I can tell you it's a well built, solid device and a good tablet-probably one of the best you'll find for $200 or less. If you're expecting a low budget iPad, you're going to be disappointed. There's no multi-touch and the screen is resistive rather than capacitive. This isn't necessary a bad thing. It comes with a nice built in stylus and frankly its soft keyboard is a lot easier to type on than the iPad's. It does run fine out of the box but it gets even better with tweaking. The built in Appslib is adequate, and there are ways to get the Android Market on it, although Google frowns on doing so. You can however use Google to search for the apps you want, download them, and install them yourself. You just need an app installer app, which you can find in Appslib. I've got the Kindle and Nook apps as well as YouTube, Weatherbug, Facebook, and the Skyfire browser. All work great. Web browsing is fast and the screen is quite nice, making viewing web pages very pleasant. A simple double tap on the screen lets you zoom in and out. However, like the iPad, the Kyros doesn't do flash. You can view some flash content through the Skyfire browser however as it uses some sort of proxy. The Kyros makes an excellent portable e-reader and internet device and it also plays videos with no problems. The quality is very good. I know a lot of people think low budget when they hear the Kyros name, but this time they've really put out an excellent product that is well worth looking at if you like the Samsung Galaxy Tab but find it out of your budget. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile It seems as if T-Mobile is going to be making more of an effort in terms of smartphone updates in the future. Or more specifically, in terms of Android smartphone updates. But interestingly enough, it seems that there lack of quick updates in the past was simply due to the whole update process being new to them. Well, new along with challenges in terms of integration and customization. The update process was recently discussed by T-Mobile chief marketing officer Cole Brodman, who stated that having smartphone owners expect frequent and fast upgrades was “new” to them. But more important than the past is the future and according to Brodman, T-Mobile is “going to have to step up and change the way we do things.” Furthermore, in terms of the future and updates, as for Android, T-Mobile is going to make an effort to roll them out within 3-5 months of Google making the update public. Of course, the question is whether the customers are going to think 3-5 months is fast enough. If you ask me, that timing sounds fairly decent. Section: Web If you were were the CEO of Verizon, I could understand why you would want to rid everyone of net neutrality. A simple motive: make more money at the expense of the consumers. Seeing as how the majority of us are consumers of the services ISPs provide, I feel as though an overwhelming majority of us would want to back net neutrality in every way possible. On Thursday, Verizon filed a legal challenge to the recent net neutrality mandates that were set into place by the FCC. Verizon is claiming that the FCC “overstepped its boundaries” by putting net neutrality laws into place late last year. It is another one of those cases in which people are taking what they have for granted. The internet is essentially an anarchy with no limitations for anyone or any packet of information. Unfortunately, it is very likely that a day will come where we will be be forced to visit certain websites over others due to the strings companies like Verizon and Comcast are pulling. If these internet providers wind up getting their way, what would stop them from making competing sites against Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, YouTube? Let us offer them a simple incentive: use our site, and your information will arrive at a faster rate and free of charge. Stick with them, and watch your internet bills and download times skyrocket. Section: Apple, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Verizon has officially released their first iPhone commercial, and nicely it does not bash AT&T and their iPhone. Yup, this one is nothing more than a bit of clock watching and waiting. Of course, as anyone that has followed the whole Verizon iPhone saga in the past knows—there was plenty of waiting. But on the positive side, this is one of the nicer smartphone commercials we have seen because along with the waiting and clock watching, Verizon offered a nice thank you at the end. Of course, truth be told, this is just a phone and on that thought, the commercial is a bit overdramatic. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile While T-Mobile is going to begin rolling out the Android 2.2 update for their Galaxy S handset (the Vibrant) as of today that does not mean all the Galaxy S handsets here in the US are going to be getting Froyo just yet. And while we have yet to hear anything official from AT&T and Verizon Wireless, we can tell you that the update for the Samsung Epic 4G is not ready just yet. The details come by way of the official Sprint Twitter account and read as follows; “Sprint & Samsung are working to release Froyo for Epic ASAP, but only after it meets rigorous testing criteria to ensure quality experience” In other words, its back to the waiting (and hoping) game. Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Peripherals, Mice / Keyboards While this is far from official, it does offer a hint that the Motorola Xoom tablet will be coming available on February 14th. And the reason why it is just a hint—the obvious—this is a product release for a Bluetooth keyboard for the Xoom tablet and not the tablet itself. Not to mention it is not even an official Motorola accessory. Needless to say, why would anyone release a keyboard if the actual tablet was not going to be available. Gotta love rumors and speculation. But hey, worst case, at least those planning to get a Motorola Xoom tablet can shop ahead and order their keyboard (assuming they wanted one) so it will be ready and waiting for when the Xoom arrives. That said, we will keep our eyes peeled for something a bit more solid in terms of the Xoom tablet release. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile It looks like T-Mobile is beefing up its mobile offerings this year not only for its tablet offerings but for smartphones too. More particularly, T-Mobile has confirmed that two 4G smartphones are coming out pretty soon. These two phones happen to be the 4G versions of the T-Mobile Sidekick and Samsung Galaxy S. In case you already forgot, the T-Mobile Sidekick is a pretty cool smartphone not only because of its cool name but because of its features back when it was introduced. And yes, the Samsung Galaxy S as well know is one of the most sought after Android phones. Unfortunately, aside from the 4G capability of these two new phones, T-Mobile has not yet divulged what other features would be added to both Android phones. But certainly, T-Mobile need to introduced new features to make these two phones more enticing to customers. This is true especially for the Sidekick since back then it was just a messaging phone. Hopefully, it will run Android 2.3 or Android 2.2 at least. As for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, we’re pretty sure Samsung will not be releasing this phone with only the Android 2.2 OS since its current version has not been upgraded to Android 2.2 yet. So there.
