Samsung Galaxy S Captivate Tweet

Many United States Samsung Galaxy S owners are seething with envy as the Rogers version of the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate is updated with the coveted Android 2.2.  Samsung has promised an update to all Galaxy S versions in the United States sometime in 2010, but that time frame has come and gone.  However, Rogers customers who own the Galaxy S Captivate have reason to be happy as Froyo has finally arrived with these improvements:

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 – for a better web browsing experience
Faster Performance – faster website loading and device navigation
Better for Business – with enhanced exchange integration and new security features

Samsung announced this information through its Canadian Twitter account earlier today.  The text of the tweet can be read below:

HTC 7 Pro available on O2 Germany for €569, next week

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

HTC 7 PRo

Remember the HTC 7 Pro that we told you about sometime last December? Back then we said that the HTC 7 Pro has been listed on O2 Germany’s site with an expected availability date of January 2011. Well, it’s now January 2011 and true enough O2 Germany might be releasing the said Windows Phone 7 device anytime this month. Actually, there’s no official announcement yet, the information was sort of confirmed via O2’s official Twitter account. What’s good about the tweet is the fact that we now know how much O2 is going to offer the HTC 7 Pro.

So, if you are keen on getting the HTC 7 Pro, prepare as much as €569. The HTC 7 Pro will be available through O2’s MyHandy payment plan which will require you to pay €29 in advance plus a chance to pay the phone in 24 equal monthly payments.

Unfortunately, there’s no pre-order page yet from the O2 Germany site. If you check the official product site for HTC 7 Pro, you’ll see the same site we told you about before - specifying the the HTC 7 Pro is “expected to be available from: January.” I hope it doesn’t mean January 2012.

Dell Streak 7 T-Mobile

Being a 4G-enabled tablet, you’ll be assured of up to 21 Mbps peak speeds via T-Mobile’s 4G mobile broadband service. RadioShack to shut down more than 400 Sams Club kiosk sales locations

Section: Business News, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

RadioShack Logo

As a result of an expiring contract between RadioShack and Wal-Mart, RadioShack will have to shut down over 400 kiosks in various Sam’s Club retail stores.  The contract is set to expire on June 30 and at the time Sam’s Club will take over the kiosk and replace it with something else.  RadioShack has made a nice profit for itself through kiosks in Sam’s Club by selling cell phones and contracts.  In fact, the tech giant company profited around $20.6 million in the first nine months of 2010.  To compensate for less kiosks in Sam’s Club, RadioShack will most likely add more kiosks to various Target retail stores across the United States, but RadioShack is not optimistic in matching a similar profit.

Skype reaches new milestone, tops 27 million simultaneous users

Section: Communications, VoIP

While many have used Skype up till this point, it seems that the service has recently gotten a nice boost due to the recently announced video call support on the iPhone. Anyway, the team over at Skype have announced they have reached a new milestone in terms of simultaneous users—27 million. And for those wondering, that has topped the 25 million that are usually online during peak hours. Of course, at this point some will likely just remember the recent downtime issues that Skype had. Still, 27 million is rather impressive, wonder how long it will be until they crack the 30 million simultaneous user mark?

2600 Magazine now available on the Kindle—in subscription form

Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks

We first saw 2600 Magazine come available for the Kindle a few months back, in early-November to be specific. Though at the time the quarterly magazine was only available for purchase as individual issues. Well, flash forward till today and you can still buy the magazine on an issue by issue basis for $3.95 each, however you can also subscribe. Yup, 2600 Magazine subscriptions have arrived for those reading on a Kindle. That said, the magazine is quarterly which means you get four issues per year if you subscribe and in terms of price—$0.99 per month. Yes as strange as it sounds you will be paying $1 per month to get 4 magazines per year. Still, that is actually a good deal considering the 4 issues purchased separately would cost you almost $16.

Amazon rolls out Kindle for iOS update, now at version 2.5

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Amazon rolls out Kindle for iOS update, now at version 2.5

Amazon has rolled out the latest update in terms of the Kindle app for iOS, which also happens to be a universal app with support for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. That said, the latest update brings the version up to 2.5 and with that comes some new features as well as some improvements and bug fixes.

  • Continue downloading books while the app is in the background on iOS 4 devices.
  • Access millions of free and out-of-copyright books from Project Gutenberg, Internet Archive, and other online sources. Open supported files from Safari and Mail or use File Sharing in iTunes to transfer files to your Kindle app.
  • Improved image zoom
  • New book indicator
  • Bug fixes

With that, I also came upon my first complaint with reading using the Kindle app on the iPad—it is not compatible with subscription items.

Verizon makes it official, the iPhone 4 will be available Feb 10th and pre-orders begin Feb 3rd

As many expected, Verizon and Apple have officially announced the iPhone 4 this morning. The iPhone will come available with Verizon on February 10th with the features that we have come to expect with the iPhone such as 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, Facetime and a 5 megapixel camera. Not to mention the Retina Display. Also included will be Mobile Hotspot for up to five devices. But aside from the Mobile Hotspot detail, we already knew all that stuff about the iPhone. So what about the important details, you know the pricing and who will be eligible for upgrades. Well, the price will be $199.99 for the 16GB model and $299.99 for the 32GB model, both of course are on a two-year agreement. Existing Verizon customers will have the option to pre-order on February 3rd. The one bummer, “Verizon Wireless is not offering any early upgrade promotion at this time.” In other words, some current Verizon customers are going to have to wait even longer.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro Successor - Front

Purported images of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro successor have leaked to AndroidCommunity and the device looks to be high-end with a small screen and slider QWERTY keyboard.  In addition, it reportedly features a 1GHz processor, which could be 800MHz, an independent GPU, Android 2.3 (which is pretty impressive to launch with the latest version of Android), a possible front facing camera, and a rear facing camera of at least 5MP.  In terms of the screen size, it is likely to launch with a 3 inch screen with 320 x 480 resolution.

No word on pricing or even availability at this point, but with images have already been leaked, it should only be a matter of time before Sony Ericsson makes the device official.

With all of the hype that we have seen in this build up, it does not seem like anyone will have forgotten, but just in case—the Verizon event kicks off at 11am EST / 8am PST today. As to what it will be, well, most think the iPhone and while we remain hopeful for a few reasons, we will find out for sure in just a few hours. As to why we want the iPhone to come to Verizon, its almost like how we wanted The Beatles to come to iTunes, not so we could have it, just so we could finally put a rumor aside and move onto something else.

Verizon outs HP/Palm webOS LTE device

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon outs HP LTE webOS device

HP Palm is holding an event next month in February but hasn’t released details on what is coming.  Today, we’ve got some info on a test Verizon is performing which they call LTE Voice.  The test is set up (or was set up - it’s been pulled) online for a LTE variant and 3G variant.

Verizon hosted the above page which shows new device IDs, so it’s accepted were talking about a new device despite the Palm Pre Plus verbiage and image.  We don’t believe anyone at HP believe they’ll sell a Palm Pre Plus Plus.  No other info was gleamed from the test page other than the LTE designation.

And that’s enough to excite WebOS fanboys.  One site suggests it could be Verizon’s first device to handle both data and voice over LTE (announced devices use LTE for data only, CDMA handles the voice transmission).  Another says the Voice name isn’t sticking (

).

We’ll find out at the HP event exactly what is going on next month.

Sprint lowers Samsung Epic 4G pricing to $199.99

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Sprint has officially announced a price cut on the Samsung Epic 4G smartphone, its now down to $199.99. Of course, the same rules apply in that a two-year contract is required. Not to mention, this price comes after a $100 mail-in-rebate, so while the final price is $199.99 you will need to be prepared to shell out $299.99 on the day of purchase. That said, while we commend Sprint for lowering the price, you can always shop with a third party if you want a deal on the Epic 4G. In this case, Wirefly has it priced at $179.99 and that comes without anything to mail in as well as free shipping.

Verizon will reportedly spend $5 billion in subsidies for the iPhone during first year

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

While all signs are currently pointing to Verizon announcing the iPhone later this morning, we have word coming from a recent Bloomberg report which states that this announcement could cost Verizon big time. According to the details given, Verizon could potentially spend anywhere from as low as $3 and up to $5 billion to subsidize the iPhone this year. And of course, that $3 to $5 billion would likely eat into what would otherwise be profit.

While the smartphone will help Verizon add more subscribers this year than rival AT&T Inc., currently the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, it will also crimp profits, said John Hodulik, an analyst at UBS AG. Hodulik said Verizon may sell 13 million of the devices with an estimated $400 subsidy this year, which would add up to a total of $5.2 billion.
