Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Web, Web Apps Tomorrow is expected to bring the launch of the CDMA iPhone on the Verizon Wireless network. Despite numerous confirmations from WSJ and other sources, it’s always nice to see Verizon sort of the spill the beans itself. Two days ago, Verizon’s official Twitter account sent out a message pertaining to a CES award for its home monitoring/control system. While the message itself isn’t important, but it was sent using Twitter for iPhone—the Twitter app for iOS. The question then becomes was a Verizon Wireless representative seriously using an iPhone on AT&T to send out that tweet, or was the tweet sent from a Verizon Wireless representative testing out a CDMA iPhone early. You can decide for yourself which is the more likely scenario. The Broadway live TV streamer is a stand alone box that lets you watch live TV programming on your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch via Wi-Fi or any Internet connection. Broadway is simple to use. Once setup, it will display a list of Broadway provided TV channels from your cable TV network on your iOS devices and all you have to do is to tap on a choosen TV channel, and presto - you can start watching the TV program on your device. Broadway also works even when you travel for as long as your iOS device is connected to the Internet. The device connects to your home network router and transmits TV signal through your network router over the Internet. Broadway works with any standard home wired network or 802.11 g/n wireleless router. It requires low power and is always ready to send live TV to your Apple device. It only needs a TV Source which can be a cable TV connection or a TV antenna plus a connection to a home network router. And in case you’re wondering how Broadway works - well, the device is equipped with a high-quality, high-definition H.264 video compressor which can take TV programs from clear QAM digital cable TV or ATSC over-the-air TV. It then shrinks these TV programs into a form that can be displayed to your iOS devices. Broadway is scheduled for release to the US market in the next six weeks and will retail for $199. Therefore, the only 4G networks included in the count result from Verizon Wireless and Sprint in the United States whom run LTE and WiMAX networks, respectively. In fact, the 10 million expected sales are only going to account for 20% of HTC’s total shipments, just to give some perspective on how many sales HTC could easily manage in 2011. Just in 2010, HTC sold 3.5 million 4G units with the bulk resulting from the HTC EVO 4G (3 million) and just half a million from the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. The mid-range HTC EVO Shift 4G and the high-end HTC Thunderbolt are going to be the first few big phones for the giant Taiwanese based electronics company. Either way, as there are so many Evernote users out there, it seems like this will help more than a few who are looking to transition from their current smartphone to a Windows Phone 7 device. I know myself, personally I would be holding out until I actually had Evernote available. And for those who have never returned anything to an Apple Store, they would typically charge a 10 percent restocking fee for any opened products. Anyway, according to the details given, this new no-restocking-fee policy is set to go into effect in just a few days, on January 11th. Which for those keeping track is also the day when we are expecting to finally see the Verizon iPhone announced. The message was sent on January 9th and simply states that they are “working on the build” and have one “last kink to solve with the VUDU app.” Of course, that may or may not be good news for those awaiting Vudu on the Boxee Box as the rest of the message states that they plan to “release the firmware tomorrow with or without.” That said, we are still awaiting the Netflix update which is not set to arrive until later this month. Well, that and Hulu Plus. While we can all breathe a sigh of relief, unfortunately we’ve still a ton of questions. Many of these questions could (or should) stop people from buying the iPhone. Let’s start with the easy ones. Ones like, assuming we’re looking at an iPhone 4 with CDMA radio, how did Apple resolve antennagate? Offering free bumpers might work with just one carrier, but the weak solution can’t fly with Verizon too. Have they finally got the white color ready? There questions that require thought like, how will the Verizon plans differ from AT&Ts? Will FaceTime now work over their network instead of being restricted to WiFi like at AT&T? Will the Verizon network be brought to its knees in Vegas next CES? How about the bigger questions: if we see a January/February launch of Verizon’s iPhone 4 variant, what happens in June when Apple launches iPhone 5 on AT&T? Will AT&T have an exclusive on the new design until next Jan/Feb? That doesn’t sit well. Will Verizon get an iPhone 5 in June too? Does that mean the Verizon iPhone 4 is a sucker bet and users should hold out? And how about LTE? I think it safe to say this version of the iPhone will not have an LTE radio. Verizon focused very heavily on LTE at CES and showed off 10 up and comers that will launch this year. I don’t believe they’ll add iPhone to that list tomorrow. But how about in June? Apple isn’t going to sit by while Android gets decorated in 4G from head to toe and show up with just 3G only iPhone (I can hear “wimpy wimpy wimpy” in my head). Apple is going to cram 4G into version 5, heck they might even call it 5G just to one-up Google, who knows? But if I am right, Verizon iPhone 4 is a suckers bet if in 4 months we’ll see one that can run on 4G (and you happen to live in an area that has the 4G network lit up). We know Apple is mum on future products and offerings. They likely are not going to say anything about iPhone 5 and we’ll be left to guess/speculate on our own. Will Verizon give us indication on their plans? I am not sure they can avoid with all the 4G/LTE discussion they’ve started. Just a few days ago, Verizon Wireless sent out invitations to an event this Tuesday (January 11) in which many people assumed to be the historic event that announces the iPhone on Verizon. The WSJ came out on the same day promising that Verizon will be announcing the iPhone and not any other product. Today, the WSJ is reporting once again that Verizon Wireless will be offering an unlimited data plan for soon-to-be iPhone owners. Interestingly enough, AT&T has stopped offering unlimited data plans in favor of tiered data plans. For example, the largest data plan offered on AT&T is 2GB of data for $25, while Verizon Wireless is expected to offer an unlimited data plan for $30. For most people, 2GB of data is more than enough and the $5 saved is a nice bonus. However, there are many power iPhone users whom would love an unlimited data plan, so it makes sense Verizon Wireless will offer such a plan to entice current AT&T customers. Even though Verizon Wireless has repeatedly announced its intentions to move towards a tiered data plan, it doesn’t look like such a move will come in the near future. Analysts already are predicting lofty goals for the iPhone on Verizon, such as 12 million devices sold in 2011 alone.
