Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Based on this latest image of a Verizon internal memo, it looks like the rebates are going to be going away for smartphones that are priced at $150 or more. According to the details, “smartphones net priced $150 and above will have no rebates” and “smartphones net priced $149.99 and below will have $50 rebates.” Of course, while that alone sounds nice, it was followed up with the catch that “exceptions may apply.” Still, as a general rule this sounds good. After all, it kind of stinks to have to pay more on the day of purchase and then fill something out and wait for that money to come back in the mail. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Verizon seems to be starting to push the iPhone 4 a bit more and more as time goes on. Or based on this latest addition to the Verizon iPhone 4 website we should say as time goes down. Yup, Verizon has updated their www.verizonwireless.com/iphoneorder page and added a countdown timer. Of course, the countdown is running towards the February 3rd 3AM pre-order option, but still, Verizon wants to make sure you do not miss out. And unfortunately, as of now, the pre-order slots will be limited to current and eligible Verizon customers. In other words, if you are going to be a new Verizon customer you should still mark your calendar for February 10th. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Verizon may have officially announced the HTC Thunderbolt during CES, however they failed to let everyone know when the handset would be available and how much it would be selling for. According to the official word from Verizon, it was coming and that was about it. Given that we are thankful we have the interwebs and the rumors that often fly around. That said, the latest HTC Thunderbolt release and price rumors suggest a February 24th release and a $249 price tag. Of course, that price is on-contract which means a two-year agreement. Otherwise, you can also pick it up for $329 with a one-year agreement or $599 without any agreement. In terms of the device itself, the Thunderbolt features a 4.3 inch touchscreen display, 1GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera on the back, front facing camera, Android 2.2, HTC Sense 2.0 and a 32GB microSD card included with purchase. Not to mention, the rumors that suggest it will be able to handle simultaneous voice and 3G data—a first for Verizon. Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks Google recently offered up the Android 3.0 SDK and that means the playing and experimenting has begun. In other words, those with a little more technical know-how have been playing and seeing just what hardware they could get Honeycomb to run on. Needless to say, one of those device was the NOOKcolor. That said, while interesting and a nice concept (plus really fun to see done) it was described as not really working all that well and begin rather slow. For example, it was noted that the “touch input doesn’t work” and there is “no hardware acceleration.” Still, Android 3.0 was ported to a NOOKcolor and that alone has to count for something. That said, the discussion over on the xda-developers forum seems to be ongoing so maybe this will turn out to be a nice build for that device. Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks, Features, Originals While everyone’s definition of fun will likely vary, I am still going to take a chance on this one and go with a book—yes, a book as in reading. The reason is simple, for me, reading actually is fun. But otherwise, the book that I am recommending today is coming from a fellow geek, actually a self-described “BlackBerry extraordinary” and what better way to support a fellow geek than by supporting their efforts. Plus, as if it could get any more interesting, this novel was actually written on a BlackBerry. I will admit, that last one was the part that hooked me in, but that aside I started the book yesterday evening and had a hard time telling myself it was actually time for bed. Seriously, the book starts out awesome and I cannot wait to spend some more time reading today. So without further adieu, the book is called The Becoming: Outbreak and it looks to be available for the Kindle and the Nook as well as several other formats directly from the authors website. The official description reads as; “The year is 2009. In the heart of the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, a virus capable of casing untold misery is unleashed into the world. Known only as the Michaluk Virus, its effects are widespread and devastating. As civilization begins to crumble under the hoards of homicidal infected, three people - Ethan Bennett, a police officer with the Memphis PD; Cade Alton, his best friend and former military sniper; and Brandt Evans, a lieutenant in the US Marines - band together in an attempt to survive the oncoming crush of death and terror sweeping across the southeastern United States. Facing the deaths and destruction of everyone and everything they know, these three people discover that the only thing they can count on is each other.” And lastly, The Becoming: Outbreak is selling for only $0.99 and it just the first of a five part series. Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Netbooks It seems that MSI may have quietly shipped out its previously announced WindPad Windows 7 tablet. UK online retailer Simply Electronics has just posted it up for sale for a whooping sale price of $710. Yes folks, while we may have known MSI to be the purveyor of cheap netbooks before, it seems that they couldn’t do the same for their WindPad tablet. Anyway, if you don’t mind spending that much, you can go ahead and order this MSI baby. And if you really want to own it I’ll order right now because as of this moment there are only 5 units of the WindPad left from the retailer. As a reminder before you finally spend your $710, the MSI WindPad tablet features a 1.6GHz Atom Z530, Windows 7 Home Premium, 32GB storage, 2GB of RAM, HDMI output, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, front- and back-facing cameras and a 6-hour battery life. Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Web, Google Google has announced the date for their latest Android event, which according to the images and wording on the invitation—is expected to be covering Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The event will take place on February 2nd, which coincidentally is the same day that Rupert Murdoch is planning to officially announce his iPad newspaper—The Daily. And we must say, while there was some intrigue in The Daily around the Gadgetell offices, this Android event has taken the top honors for the day at this point. Needless to say, Google is promising an hour long event that will kick off at 10AM on February 2nd and will offer an “in-depth look at Honeycomb, Android ecosystem news and hands-on demos.” And lucky for those not attending, Google will be live streaming this event and you can watch on YouTube, www.youtube.com/android. Section: Web, Web Apps, Websites By now you’ve probably heard of Instapaper, the service that saves articles and formats them for easier reading. Instapaper is great, and arguably one of the best ways to read longer articles online, especially on a tablet or smartphone. The problem with Instapaper is that you have to remember to send articles to it, and a lot of the time those articles can be from the same source. Instascriber solves this problem by letting you essentially import an RSS feed into Instapaper. Just log into Instascriber, input your Instapaper username/pasword, and input an RSS feed link. New articles added to that feed will then be added to your Instapaper account. They won’t come immediately, so it won’t function exactly like an RSS reader, but it’s much easier than having to manually put every article into your queue. After hearing about it, Instascriber sounds like something that that should be included with Instapaper. It a bit surprising it isn’t, but at least there’s a way to do it.
