Dell Streak 7 on T-Mobile to cost $330?

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

T-Mobile Dell Streak 7

T-Mobile is about to release the Dell Streak 7 tablet sometime in the near future, so much so that if you check its official product page for the said device, you’ll find out that the “add to cart” button is still inactive. So, you have no way of finding out how much this tablet will actually cost you if you get it from T-Mobile. But if you’re logical and resourceful enough, you can use some of the information available on the product page to analyze and conclude on the possible price of the Dell Streak 7. Curiously enough, the folks at StreakSmart.com studied the information contained on the said page and comparing it with previous scenario done by T-Mobile on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This led them to conclude that the Dell Streak 7 could be possibly priced for $329.

So, how was the possible price of the T-Mobile Dell Streak 7 computed? First, just below the page, written in small fonts are are statements that say - ҠOn approved credit. $82.50 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $82.50, required. 0% APR. Taxes & fees additional. Available only at T-Mobile-owned retail stores; see store for details.

The $82.50 down payment plus 3 monthly payments of $82.50 is actually equivalent to the 4 monthly installment scheme offered for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. So for the Dell Streak 7, this means the its market price on-contract will be $330.

Now, whether that is true or not, the question is in that price range, do you think T-Mobile has the right to say that the Dell Streak 7 is “amazingly priced?”

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

T-Mobile Price cuts on Android smartphones

Looking to pick up a quality Android smartphone on T-Mobile?  According to its online webstore, every single Android smartphone T-Mobile has to offer is available for $99 or less.  Since no press release was issued regarding this current promotion, we’re not positive on how long this deal will be around for or whether it reflects the pricing of these devices from here on out.  Several smartphones are available for free such as the Motorola Defy.  Several are available for $29 such as the Motorola Charm.  Others are available for $49 such as the T-Mobile myTouch Slide 3G.  The only device available for $89 is the Motorola CLIQ XT.  A few high-end smartphones are available for $99 such as the new Motorola CLIQ 2, the T-Mobile G2, the Samsung Vibrant, Samsung Behold II, and the myTouch 4G.

T-Mobile could be lowering these prices permanently to make room for upcoming devices such as the Samsung Galaxy 4G and the Sidekick 4G.

Jawbone Era, a Bluetooth headset with and accelerometer

Section: Audio, Communications, Mobile

Jawbone Era

After the launch of the Jambox a few months ago, Jawbone seems to be focusing on the quality of audio in it’s products. That’s easy for the Jambox, a Bluetooth stereo, but Jawbone claims it’s managed to get better sound quality in it’s latest Bluetooth headset, the Era. If better audio isn’t enough, to justify the new headset, Jawbone added an accelerometer along with a few other improvements.

The Jawbone Era is the successor to the Icon, but this time the audio is in HD. What that actually means is that the Jawbone Era sports a 10mm driver to give what should be much better sound than in the Icon. The improved sound comes with NoiseAssassin 3.0, which this time is supposed to adjust the volume of inbound calls based on the noise in your surroundings. Hopefully it works better than NoiseAssassin 2.0 which I could never get to work right in my Jawbone Icon.

The biggest addition to the Jawbone Era is the accelerometer. The accelerometer means you can shake the Era to pair it with your phone. The only other gesture is a double tap to answer and hang up calls. More could be on the way through the MyTalk platform, but there’s no promises at the moment.

If the better sound and accelerometer pique your interest, the Jawbone Era will show up in Best Buy, Apple and AT&T stores this Sunday, January 23 for $130.

Samsung Galaxy S2 specs revealed—Android 2.3, NFC, Dual-core processor

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Samsung Galaxy S2 teaser

Just yesterday, an invitation located on a Samsung website announced the existence of the Galaxy S successor to be displayed at MWC 2011.  According to a report, the specs of the upcoming Galaxy S2 device, codenamed Seine, are high-end and similar in nature to the Google Nexus S.

The Super AMOLED four inch display customary on Galaxy S devices will be upgraded to a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display which brings a higher resolution and a clearer picture.  In addition, it sports NFC capability, 8MP rear facing camera, 1GB RAM, Dual-core Samsung Orion processor, full HD 1080p video recording, and it is less than 9mm thick.  The specs do not reveal whether a front facing camera is present or not, but I would assume one exists.

We will have to wait until February 13 for official confirmation of these specs, but they seem realistic and legitimate.

One down, three to go: Spotify takes a step towards a US launch

Section: Audio

Spotify

Hearing about Spotify’s plans for a US launch can get tiring after a while. The company had planned to launch in the US by the end of 2010, and now in 2011 we still don’t have the service. Now the eventual launch seems a bit more plausible now that Spotfiy has one of the big four labels signed on.

Spotify has finally managed to ink a deal with Sony that could end up bringing Spotify to the US. The deal would allow for a limited amount of free streaming along with ads, and unlimited streaming in a paid service. The deal is similar to what Spotify has in Europe, though we don’t have any specifics. Still, that’s one of the big four labels signed, only three to go.

Spotify could make do with just two labels in the US, with Universal Music Group being the other name thrown around. It would make sense given that UMG is the biggest of the big four. Hopefully having a deal with Sony means Spotify can come to terms with any of the other two. Usually when the big labels sign on, the smaller ones are quick to follow. If Spotify can sign on another big label and a good selection of smaller labels, that should be enough for a US launch. Maybe that’ll come soon, but given Spotify’s past, it’s a good idea to be cautiously optimistic at best.

The support comes by way of the latest firmware update which you can get by navigating to Settings -> System -> Update or by just being patient and waiting. The movie rentals will set you back either $2 for SD or $6 for HD and each will give you two nights to enjoy. And speaking of HD, Vudu on the Boxee Box will have the Vudu HDX format which is described as being a “match made in geek heaven.” According to the Boxee Blog;

“Video is 1080p HD at 24 fps.  Sound is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround. It takes advantage of some crafty engineering from VUDU dubbedTruFilm™ which optimizes the encoding, transmission and display of HDX movies on 40-inch HDTVs and larger screens. It's kind of hard to believe this stuff is coming over your Internet connection.”

Best Buy will not be carrying the Verizon iPhone, but may have the exclusive on the HTC Thunderbolt

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

According to the Boy Genius, Best Buy will not be offering the Verizon iPhone at first launch however they are going to have “exclusive retail sale” rights for the Android based HTC Thunderbolt when that comes available. Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Verizon or Best Buy just yet. In other words, until we hear something official, this is just a rumor. That said, while the Thunderbolt is a more than decent looking Android device, we cannot help but think Best Buy would be disappointed with missing out on the iPhone launch.

Google Nexus One expected to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread update soon

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

The last we heard (back in late-December) was that Google was planning to roll-out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for Nexus One users. Anyway, at that time the update was said to be arriving “in the coming weeks” and as of today we have another (and equally vague) update to pass on. Anyway, the latest details are coming from Computer World who are citing a representative from the Android team who states that the roll-out should begin “soon.” With that, and based on the previous coming weeks and the now soon comments—we suspect Android 2.3 should be available for Nexus One users any day. Of course, that is just as vague as the others. But seriously, if you are sporting a Nexus One you may want to keep an eye out for an update notification.

And what do we know about the HTC Flyer? According to the same source, the HTC Flyer looks like an enlarged version of the HTC Desire.

Unknown third party culprit behind Windows Phone 7 phantom data use

Section: Communications, Cellphones

Unknown third party culprit behind Windows Phone 7 phantom data use

It looks like a random third party is behind the recent unwarranted cellular usage of Windows Phone 7. This third party would make certain customers run through their monthly data in a hurry leaving behind hefty phone bills. Thankfully, this issue has only affected a small portion of Windows Phone 7 users and Microsoft is undergoing an investigation to point out the root of this whole mess.

“We have determined that a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones is configured in a manner that potentially causes larger than expected data downloads. We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents.

We are investigating additional potential root causes for the remainder of the reports.

A small (low single-digit) percentage of Windows Phone customers have reported being affected.

We are continuing to investigate this issue and will update with additional information and guidance as it becomes available.”

At least it’s good to know that big daddy Microsoft is handling the situation thoroughly. Hopefully, the update for Windows Phone 7 (which is slated to come out sometime later this month) will tie up any and all loose ends.

Google begins testing number porting, its almost time to bring your current number in

Section: Communications, Mobile, Web, Google

It looks like Google Voice has officially begun testing number portability. In other words, at least as of now some Google Voice users have been able to pay $20 and have their non-Google Voice number turned into their Google Voice number. Of course, this does come with a few catches in that it will terminate any account that you had with that number by way of a carrier and that brings a potential early termination fee. Furthermore, once a new number is ported into Google Voice it will replace your existing GV number. That said, the new feature is currently in testing and according to Google should be available for all sometime “in the near future.” With that, if you are itching to make the full-time move to Google Voice and cannot bear to part with your other number—hold tight as your time is almost here. Me personally, I have been using Google Voice exclusively for a little more than a year now, but then again I managed to snag a pretty sweet number right in my home area code.
