Section: Apple, Computers, Software / Applications Despite the fact that Apple has it’s own office suite for the Mac, Microsoft continues to see good sales for Office for Mac. Of course now the difference is to get Apple’s suite, all you need to do is open the Mac App Store and buy the Pages, Keynote and Numbers individually. It seems Microsoft may be looking at making it that easy to get Office for Mac eventually. According to Amanda Lefebvre of Microsoft, the company is looking into the Mac App Store for distribution of Office for Mac. Office for Mac is currently available on disc and online, complete with a 30-day trial. Of course those sales don’t involve Apple getting a 30-percent cut of the profit, which putting Office for Mac in the Mac App Store would do. Lefebvre said that Microsoft has to see “how that relates to out business” before making any decisions. Microsoft already has some presence in the iOS App Store with the recent launch of OneNote for iPhone. So, even if we don’t see Office for Mac in the Mac App Store any time soon, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Office for iPhone eventually make it’s way to the App Store. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones Many Google Nexus S owners are experiencing a critical software error regarding “random reboots” occurring “at least once every two days.” For some reason, Google has been slow to solve the problem but now they are on track to roll out a software update that fixes the problem in “one to two weeks.” Android software engineer Ry Guy says Google is working on testing the software update making sure it is ready for release to Google Nexus S owners. Even though the period between now and the roll out of the OTA software update seems longer than necessary, it is important all the kinks and bugs are worked out. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones Just last night, AmazonWireless posted a product listing for the Motorola Atrix 4G for a brief period of time. In the product listing, AmazonWireless pinned a $150 price tag on a two year contract, which made us wonder the validity of the posting because the price seemed very cheap. However, a leaked inventory screenshot from Costco also shows a $150 price tag, thereby adding more credibility to the price we saw on AmazonWireless. I still don’t believe AT&T will sell the Atrix 4G for that cheap, but perhaps third party retailers such as AmazonWireless and Costco really are going to sell it for $150 on a two year contract. Section: Apple, Audio, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Software / Applications, Web, Online Music/Video While this does not bring us any closer to the February 10th release date of the Verizon iPhone 4, it does bring the support that will be required. Yup, Apple has released the latest iTunes software update, which brings the version up to 10.1.2 and includes support for the “CDMA iPhone 4.” Interesting to see that it was not listed as the Verizon iPhone 4, but either way, it will still mean that those who make the purchase from Verizon will be able to setup and sync their iDevice. In addition, iTunes 10.1.2 was also noted as having “a number of important stability and performance improvements.” Via [Apple] and [9to5Mac] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks Amazon announced their Q4 2011 quarterly earnings just recently and they dropped a rather interesting little fact in—they are now selling more Kindle books then they are paperback books. Yup, it seems the Kindle is winning. Of course, having people read is really not about winning, but it seems the ereader is gaining more and more acceptance outside the geek crowd. Anyway, according to Amazon; “Amazon.com is now selling more Kindle books than paperback books. Since the beginning of the year, for every 100 paperback books Amazon has sold, the Company has sold 115 Kindle books. Additionally, during this same time period the Company has sold three times as many Kindle books as hardcover books. This is across Amazon.com’s entire U.S. book business and includes sales of books where there is no Kindle edition. Free Kindle books are excluded and if included would make the numbers even higher.” And to go with that, Amazon has described Kindle 3 sales as being in the “millions” and once again failed to give anything solid in terms of a number. Furthermore, the US Kindle Store now has more than 810,000 books available for sale. Read [Yahoo! Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile What's the most common phrase heard around the Gadgetell newsroom? Is it "I love Apple?", "that's cool!" or "sweet!"? Answer: none of them, it's "they are on crack." This week we take a look back at the things that made us chuckle in the tech world. This week, it seems there were more folks on dope than not. Lets get to this week's accused: Verizon must really hate those AT&T commercials Do you want the Verizon iPhone “3am bad?” “Gosh darn Facebook privacy settings” Zuckerberg iPhone 5 could give us best of both worlds? Talk and chew gum at the same time? Verizon tries to walk the walk Eager to reduce the difference between the Verizon iPhone and the AT&T variant, Verizon is working on ways to eliminate that. According to our esteemed editor, Robert Nelson, “...it seems that many AT&T iPhone users are citing this as a reason to not jump ship to Big Red. Anyway, it has always been described as simply not being possible with Verizon using 3G data. And well, it seems that may soon be changing, except not with the iPhone 4, but with an Android smartphone instead. The details are coming by way of a leaked image from Verizon that states how the HTC Thunderbolt will be able to use "3G simultaneous voice & data." This is an odd development for a couple of reasons. First, it won’t affect the iPhone. Second, with LTE Verizon will use it for data transmission while still relying on CDMA for voice; so it becomes a non-issue with a 4G iPhone which I expect this June. But it gets better. The best part of the leak: “we cannot promise the experience will be one that is consistent with our brand.” Translation, “wow, that sucks.” What ever you do, don’t go out drinking Feb 2! And speaking of a Verizon iPhone, we’ve got some intel this week on when you can get it. Again, Nelson gives it to us, ” if you are planning to try and get an iPhone 4 from Verizon and are eligible to pre-order, you may want to set your alarm and make sure you are up and online at 3AM that morning because further details stated that the pre-order inventory is limited and once it is gone you will have to wait until the 10th to place your order.” Here’s the conversation we can assume went down inside Verizon: Leader: AT&T went down taking pre-orders for this damn thing. How can we avoid that? Minion1: I don’t know, what are you doing at 3am? Leader: Chilling, having a bud. Minion2: No one is up at 3am. This is stupid Minon1: 3am is when the cool people get home, so we’ll take advantage of all the drunk people just rollin in who will drunk dial for an iPhone. Minion2: We’re sure to have the servers back up by the time the common man wakes up, that works for me. Leader: Genius. “Gosh darn Facebook privacy settings” Zuckerberg Think your Facebook page is secure? Our Tarun Kunwar lets us know otherwise, “Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's fan page was hacked earlier this week by an anonymous evil doer who left a message claiming that Facebook should look to become a "social business."” Now let’s break this down, Tarun calls the hacker “an anonymous evil doer.” He also finishes his post with a warning, “And if you know anything about hacking, it's only a matter until a security system can be breached.” That is a two-for-one or what we in the business call a two-for-one. Tarun makes it clear, he knows something about hacking. The other part is an almost superior stance, almost proud of the hacking. Could it be? Could Tarun be the Zuck Hacker? Nope. Seems he’s written a ton of posts for us here at Gadgetell; which proves he isn’t a hacker. How? Simple, he could get paid way more by hacking, so I hear, than for writing…unless it’s his decoy. [pretend there is another iPhone image here - I figured I’d save your machine the hassle of downloading yet another iPhone image…] iPhone 5 runs on both AT&T and Verizon Check this, “Long before the Verizon iPhone was confirmed, we'd been hearing whispers about a dual CDMA/GSM radio chip manufactured by Qualcomm that would allow future iPhones to connect to both Verizon and AT&T networks. It now looks extremely likely that Apple will be using this Qualcomm-sourced radio component for future iPhones and iPads, instead of the Infineon hardware currently being used.” Now, join me in some rock: what if Apple sells just one model of phone: not variants. Users *could* be free to get voice service from a GSM provider while getting data service from Verizon. It could be a best of both worlds where you’ll have a signal from one carrier and just use the voice or data to do your bidding. AT&T could still sell bundled services with their iPhone, and Verizon could to - so Apple would still get the added reach of their retail outlets and could back up and say to Google, “look how open and transparent our phone is…”. Assuming this is even possible, would you sign up for it? Full Story » | Written by JG Mason for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile The HTC Inspire 4G Android smartphone was officially unveiled during CES and assuming we can believe these latest rumors then it looks like it will soon be available for sale. The details are suggesting that AT&T will release the Inspire 4G on February 13th and that it will cost $99.99 on a two-year agreement. Though, worth noting is that price comes after a $50 mail-in-rebate. But still, paying $149.99 on the day of purchase still does not sound all that bad for a 4G capable Android device that features a 4.3 inch Super LCD display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 4GB of internal storage and 8 megapixel camera. That said, here is to hoping that current rumors prove to be accurate. And if nothing else, this should make for a nice addition to AT&T’s current Android lineup. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile While this is far from official, it looks like the release date and on-contract pricing for the Motorola Atrix 4G Android smartphone has been revealed. The details come by way of Amazon Wireless, who for just a short while had a product listing showing online. Bottom line, it looks like AT&T will have the Atrix 4G available on February 11th and it will cost $149.99 on a two-year agreement. Needless to say, that listing is no longer showing and that means we are going to have to wait until we get an official announcement from AT&T. Well, that or more rumors. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile It was only about a week ago that we received the official word on the Android based Sidekick—the device was heading to T-Mobile and it was going to arrive as the 4G capable Sidekick 4G. Of course, with that we were still missing most of the details in terms of specs, pricing and a release date. Not to mention, all we had was that one blurry shape that kind of sort of resembled a Sidekick. Needless to say, it looks like Mr. Blurrycam has returned and this time he has brought a few images of the Sidekick 4G along. Anyway, while this does not give us all the details for the phone, it does offer a nice look at the display and keyboard as well as tell us that the device is currently running Android 2.2.1. Though in terms of the version of Android, just because it is running that now, it does not necessarily mean that is what it will launch with. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers Samsung has officially announced they they have now shipped 2 million Galaxy Tab tablets. Of course, with this being the most impressive (at current) Android tablet available and having such widespread availability in terms of carriers this comes with a bit less surprise. And for those looking back, Samsung announced they reached the 1 million milestone just after the device had been available for two months. So two months for 1 million and another month for 2 million. Not bad, of course the falling prices probably helped to accelerate those purchases a little bit in this past month. And given that, I would say that this would be a good time to buy the Galaxy Tab if you had been holding out, but we are expecting the Galaxy Tab 2 to be unveiled in just a few weeks so you may want to hold off for now. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones An unnamed HTC device with Verizon Wireless branding has made its way on the Internet. While we have very little knowledge of the device, the unknown HTC smartphone presents an interesting form factor that isn’t really seen in Android devices. It’s essentially a touch screen on the front without the four typical soft-touch buttons seen all the time. The back of the device bears significant resemblance to the HTC Droid Incredible as it has the contour styling which helps with gripping the phone. It looks like the smartphone doesn’t come with a front facing camera, and just a rear facing camera with LED flash. Whether it sees the light of day or is simply a tease remains to be seen.
