Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones Tomorrow is expected to be a big day for HTC and Verizon Wireless as Verizon’s first smartphone with LTE capability is going to be announced: the HTC Thunderbolt. For many weeks now, we have seen rumors and reports of the Thunderbolt under many names implying a CES announcement, and now that we are literally hours away from an announcement, some hands-on images have been published. AndroidSPIN was able to use the Thunderbolt from a source and they reaffirm many of its important features. ARM v7 processor, Single Core, 1 Ghz 8 GB internal memory, (32gb sd card included) 4.3 inch screen NO HDMI port 8 MP rear camera, 1.3 MP front (We believe) Runs the new HTC Sense UI on top of Android 2.2 HTC Maps and Navigation is included DLNA support via an HTC preinstalled app Unfortunately, AndroidSPIN thinks the device won’t feature a dual-core processor, which seems to be all the buzz based on the many phone announcements coming out of CES 2011. However, the fact that is has 40GB of hard drive space, 4.3 inch touch screen, a 1.3MP front facing camera, and a 8MP rear facing camera are still solid specs. The picture at the bottom represents the Thunderbolt running a Quadrant Benchmark and it shows high fast of a device the Thunderbolt is, compared to many other Android powerhouses. This year there’s a new addition to the line, the Monster Miles Davis Trumpet. Monster is billing the Miles Davis Trumpet as the smallest in-earphones available. As the name suggests, the Miles Davis Trumpet earphones are styled to look like miniature trumpets jammed into your ear. The microphone and remote on the earphones are styled after the keys you’d find on a trumpet as well. The Miles Davis Trumpet earphones will also ship with a copy of Davis’ “Sketches of Spain” mixed for surround sound. The Trumpet will ship later this year for $349. Today LG announced it’s new SmartTV platform with even more connectivity. LG’s SmartTV platform will offer the same premium content, but will also have a few apps and web browsing for TVs. To make the the user interface easy to use, LG SmartTVs will use the motion remote that LG showed off last year. It will make navigating the menus easy for anyone who is at least vaguely familiar with the Nintendo Wii. For those who don’t want to buy a new LG TV to get the system, LG has launched a stand-alone box to bring the features to any TV with an HDMI port. The box is called the LG SmartTV Upgrader. No word on pricing for the unit, when it will ship, or if it includes the motion remote. The new products happen to be two netbooks, one being an updated version of the previous Toshiba NB305 while the other a new mini netbook bearing the name Toshiba NB505. If you will recall, the Toshiba NB 305 was previously available with not so advanced features. So, Toshiba decide to update this netback and loaded it with Intel Atom N550 dual-core processor. The netbook also packs in a 250GB HDD with Toshiba’s Hard Drive Impact Sensor, 1GB of RAM, USB 2.0 port with sleep and charge feature, among other good stuff. The “world’s first dual-core smartphone” is LG’s Optimus 2X. LG hasn’t said much about the Optimus 2X, aside from the fact that it will use a 1 GHz dual-core nVidia AP20H processor, and will have full 1080p recording and playback. The phone will have full screen mirroring via the built-in HDMI port. It looks like the phone will also have a front-facing camera, though that isn’t nearly as new or interesting as the nVidio CPU inside. It looks like the Optimus 2X will be running Android with LG’s Gesture UI. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some hands-on time with the device on the CES show floor tomorrow. CEA was quick to point out that not all these are new launches, but promises they will all be on hand for display. We’ve already seen “coming soon” tablets from big names like LG, Motorola and Toshiba. We suspect all those Asian companies that jumped on the ebook reader train will have jumped tracks to the tablet line. What we’ve seen so far is Android isn’t the perfect tablet OS. We know for a fact that Windows isn’t. Did you see last night when ASUS revealed how out-of-the-loop they are when they used stylus on their tablets? Oy! Google’s got a lot riding on Honeycomb and by the transitive property, so do the manufacturers putting it on their tablets. Tablets launched with currently available Android versions, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab have received less than stellar reviews. The fact that the Tab has sold well debunks some of the reviews but the fact remains it isn’t going to catch the iPad. If we flip over to the smartphone wars, it’s a given that Android smartphones are/will beat the iPhone in quantity and, many argue, quality. Is it reasonable therefore to transfer that logic to tablets? Will the sheer number of Android tablets overwhelm the Apple offering? Will developers focus on building apps for Android tablets as we’ve seen for the iPad? Whatever the answer, we’re going to see a lot of tablets. And choice is a good thing. What better way to start off CES 2011 than with a new Android smartphone? Today LG has announced it’s newest smartphone, the LG Optimus Black. The Optimus Black is a 4-inch smartphone with a 4-inch NOVA screen, which is supposed to be the brightest screen possible. According to LG, the NOVA screen uses less energy than even AMOLED. LG claims the Optimus Black’s screen will allow users to go all day with the screen at full brightness when paired with the 1500 mAh battery. Also new in the Optimus Black is WiFi Direct, which allows for easier sharing of content between devices without using a WiFi hotspot. There’s nothing in terms of specs aside from the screen, and the 5MP back camera and 2MP front-facing camera. The phone is also said to be one of the thinnest out there, as just 9.2mm thick. The Optimus Black will run on Android 2.2, with LG’s Gesture UI laid over it, no Gingerbread yet but it should be coming. According to the details given, these new rules are set to go into effect on January 16th and they mean customers on a two-year agreement will “no longer be able to upgrade in months 13-20 of their 24 month contract as a standard policy.” That said, we are going to have to sit tight and wait for something official to come from Verizon, but still, I am sure this will upset at least some users. At CES Toyota unveiled it’s competitor to Sync, Toyota Entune. Toyota Entune uses your phone to connect to the Internet for a variety of services. The apps Toyota seems really proud of are Bing, Pandroa, iHeartRadio, and OpenTable. Through these apps you can find points of interest using Bing and OpenTable to find restaurants, movies theaters, or whatever else you can think of. You can also use MoveTickets to buy movie tickets through the interface. Pandora would just the way you expect it to, streaming from your phone. Without a phone with a data plan Toyota Entune seems to be a bit useless unless you really want to use it to make and answer calls or have the system read back SMS messages to you. Toyota won’t say which vehicles will be outfitted with Entune, only that we should see them within 2011. The next Prius would seem like an obvious choice. Maybe if we’re lucky the Lexus versions will have Google and Fandango instead of Bing and MovieTickets. The Pipsqueak is a small, shiny device that connects to your phone via Bluetooth and clips to your belt, or wherever you might want to clip it. When connected to your phone, the Pipsqueak will alert you to incoming calls so you can ignore them, put them on hold or get your phone and answer them. When holding a call, the caller hears a prerecorded message saying you’ve activated the wait feature on The Pipsqueak, and you’ll be with them shortly. Aside from calls, Pipsqueak can display date and time, and alert you when it leaves the Bluetooth ranger of your phone (about 30 feet), so you don’t forget it. The Pipsqueak seems to solve a problem not all of us have. The easy answer would be to just deal with taking out your phone, or don’t forget it. It seems like the small device would be great, however, for those who keep their phones in a purse or bag, or the forgetful. If it sounds like a good idea to you, The Pipsqueak will be available this summer for $59. In the military, Etymotic is known for creating advanced sound-dampening earplugs. Now, Etymotic is bringing that technology to civilians with the Blast PLG Earplugs. There are two models of the BlastPLG Earplugs, the EB1 and EB15. Both models offer full awareness, and are tuned to simply not damage your ears. The EB1 will dampen loud noises such as blasts or gunshots. You’ll still be able to hear them, but the sound will not be as loud as to damage your ears. The EB15 has the same feature, but will also silence droning noises. Examples given of people who would use the feature include airport baggage handlers, racing crews, construction workers and apparently DJs. Lowering the dB of droning sounds should increase awareness and much easier for users to get a sense of their surroundings. Both earplugs are available now at Etymotic.com. The EB1 cost $449 while the upgraded EB15 will run $499. If that price seems too steep, the BlastPLG Earplugs are not meant for you, but they could prove very useful to others. The numbers are coming by way of TechCrunch, who are reporting that one of the “Top Paid” apps has only been seeing 65 installs per week. And this is for an app that is relatively low priced, it is $2.99. Seems people are not quite as willing to spend money for web apps as they are for mobile apps. Or else, maybe not enough people are using the Web Store at this point because like we said, it is new and device support is limited. That said, further details state that after Google takes its cut from that 65 per week at $2.99 the developer would be getting roughly $165 per week. Now I for one would love an extra $165 per week, but at the same time it is fairly safe to say that amount is not likely to attract lots of new developers. And interestingly enough, the free apps seem to be doing much better in terms of weekly downloads with the Quick Note app doing 8,000 in this past week alone. Of course, the obvious is there in that you will need a capable television to watch them. Anyway, assuming your HDTV is also 3D then you can expect to find the 3D movies using the wide variety of Vudu supported devices to include; - FUNAI (Magnavox and Sylvania) HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
- LG HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
- Mitsubishi HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
- Philips HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
- Select 2010 and 2011 Samsung HDTVs, Blu-ray Players and Blu-ray Home Theater Systems with Samsung Apps
- Sony PlayStationÃ’3
- Toshiba HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
- VIZIO VIA HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
- Boxee Box by D-Link and Iomega TV with Boxee
With that, while the whole lack of available 3D content issue seems to be working itself out nicely there are still a few important details that we are going to need to see before considering this announcement a total success—the titles that will be available and the price that you will have to pay to watch.
