Section: Gadgets / Other, Trade Shows, CES Last year Sungale, makers of the terrible Cyberus Engine announced their first Android tablet that was running Android 1.6 at the time. This year there’s two more from the company, this time running Android 2.2. The tablets come in 7- and 10-inch varieties. Both are a bit anemic, with resistive screens and fairly slow response time. If there’s an upside to the devices it’s that the 10-inch version is running something close to stock Android, and it has Angry Birds beta pre-installed. I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to see how well Angry Birds runs on the platform, but I imagine it chugs along. The 7-inch version was running a bizarre skin that simply put red boxes under app icons, and changed the app tray button the red. The tablets are fairly cheap, running $229 for the 7-incher and $299 for the 10-incher. Not sure how that will compare to the looming iPad 2, though. It doesn’t hurt that their headphones are good, but it’s still important to pay attention to that that have been in the game for a lot longer. This year Sennheiser is giving us reason to pay attention with their new HD 598 headphones. The HD 598 is one of several headphones created to celebrate the company’s 35th anniversary. Of that set, it is the top of the line, and it really shows. The build is really impressive with the design taking inspiration from classic cars. The experience of wearing them is even better, they fit very comfortably over my ears. I could imagine they wouldn’t be all that tiring to wear for a long period of time. Even if they did get tiring, or started to hurt at all, the sound would be worth any of it. From the few minutes I stood at the booth listening to these, I think I have a new personal gold-standard of headphones. I must say that I haven’t heard “Strawberry Fields Forever” sound any better. The other samples given were also simply fantastic. With a price point of $249.95 on Amazon, I’d say these are well worth the money. Of that Tron merchandise, only one is officially branded by Daft Punk: the T1 headphones. I was able to try out these headphones for a few minutes on the show floor, and the experience was pretty great. First off, the T1 headphones have an excellent build quality. The model I was handed wasn’t exactly final (the final versions will be out within a few weeks), but still very sturdy. I though I wouldn’t like the white of the headphones, but they work very well for these, especially when the lights are turned on (they are powered by the AAA battery in the ControlTalk section of the wire). Not only where the T1s sturdy, but they felt very comfortable when I finally put them on. I haven’t used over-the-ear headphones in quite some time, but with quality like these I don’t know why. The T1s sound very good, just about the same as the high-end earphones I have been using for the past few months. I tried out the headphones with Deadmau5’s “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff,” electronic music with some bass. The bass sounded great, and not too overpowering, while the rest of it could have been a bit better, but I’m going to contribute that to the sound on the show floor at the moment. I can’t wait to try these out once they are released in a better environment. Posted recently, Kevin Rose is claiming that he has it on “good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next “3-4 weeks”, possibly Tuesday February 1st.” I guess that means if you were considering an iPad purchase you should probably hold off, at least for a few weeks anyway. Otherwise, according to the details that Kevin laid out, the iPad 2 is going to have a camera on both the front and back as well as a display with a “higher dpi” though not necessarily the retina display. I guess with CES coming to a close the geek community needed to find something to occupy all this extra energy. Here is to hoping that the iPad 2 and the Verizon iPhone actually happen. Some of them look fantastic, but others fall flat and don’t seem they can be very good at all. This Android tablet goes a different way for on of it’s 5-inch tablets, it outright copies the most popular tablet out there. This Android tablet has no qualms about being an iPad knock-off, the back is completely styled to look like the iPad 3G+WiF. Instead of having an Apple logo in the middle of the back, this tablet has a little Android etched into it, which is actually kind of neat. As a device, it doesn’t work well, with only three physical buttons: power, back, and menu. Search and Home are nowhere to be found as actual buttons. To make matters worse, the tablet doesn’t just fake the outside, it fakes the software. I was intrigued by the Plants vs Zombies icon in the Apps tray, as I was pretty sure the game has not yet been released on the Android, and certainly not in Chinese. I was right, the icon loaded what looked to be a janky knockoff version of PopCap’s popular game, with terribly designed zombies sprites. I didn’t have to chance to really play the game, but it couldn’t have been much fun. It should be said that this tablet isn’t going to hit the market at all, it’s simply a model for OEMs to pick up the hardware. Hit the gallery to see all the shots I took of the tablet. Several media outlets have received invitations from Verizon Wireless announcing an event to take place next Tuesday, January 11, 2011. At the Lincoln Center in New York City at 11 AM on the eleventh, Lowell McAdam, Verizon President and COO, will be on stage sharing with us the latest news. No word on whether it is a product announcement, LTE update, or what have you, but Verizon would not throw such a large event for some little insignificant news. Of course, the buzz on the Internet is Verizon will be announcing the CDMA iPhone on the eleventh, but what makes this even more interesting is the fact that Gizmodo did not receive an invitation. You will probably remember the debacle between Gizmodo and Apple dating back to last Spring, when Gizmodo found themselves in possession of an iPhone 4 prototype. And ever since, Apple has stopped inviting Gizmodo to events. Now, Gizmodo is presumably on good terms with Verizon Wireless, so it is surprising to see Verizon Wireless not invite the popular tech website, unless Apple is pulling some strings behind the scenes. We will learn more come January 11, 2011 and keep it here for all the information announced at the event. One of the newest partnerships is with HoMedics who is working with the family of the great reggae artist Bob marley to create a whole line of audio equipment. The equipment in the line range from low-end earbuds for $30, all the way up to $300 over-the-ear headphones. There’s more than just headphones, with iPod docks including one that comes in a carrying case so you can ring it around anywhere you want. There’s three ranges of products from those who just want inexpensive headphones with nice designs, those who want to spend a bit more for better quality sound and the $300 headphones and $500 dock for professionals, or those who fancy themselves professionals. According to House of Marley, the products are made with four principles in mind: superior quality, sustainably sourced, cause minded and waste conscious. For quality, the company tests all the headphones with reggae music (while Monster tests the Beats with hip hop, specifically “In The Club” by 50 Cent), also keep in mind nobody sets out to make a bad product, ever. The second principle means that House of Marley products use as little plastic as possible, wand what isn’t natural is recycled and can be recycled back. Not only that, but a portion of all sales of the equipment will go to 1Love, the Marley family’s nonprofit wich supports charities that “empower youth, protect our planet and encourage global peace.” Waste conscious is a bit obvious: use recycled material for product and packaging. House of Marley is trying to compete with Monster in terms of headphone quality here, though it has a bit of an uphill battle. It’d be nice if someone can provide some high-quality competition for Monster. We’ll have to wait a few months to see if House of Marley can do it, the headphones in their booth were all hand-built models.
