After all, the PlayBook is not expected to debut until March and that is only in a Wi-Fi only model. This latest, the Torch 2 seems to be similar to the Dakota in that it appears to be a nice step up from previous versions. Just to begin with, the Torch 2 is going to arrive sporting a 1.2GHz processor complete with hardware acceleration. A nice bump up from the 600MHz processor on the original Torch. Anyway, other specs include a 3.2 inch VGA (640 x 480) capacitive touchscreen display, 8GB internal storage, 512MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, NFC, a 1300 mAh battery and 5 megapixel camera with flash. In addition the Torch 2 is also going to ship with BlackBerry OS 6.1. With that, while we are still not sure what the launch price will be, we do know that the handset is expected to arrive with AT&T later in the year—sometime in Q3. Is it "I love Apple?", "that's cool!" or "sweet!"? Answer: none of them, it's "they are on crack." This week we take a look back at the things that made us chuckle in the tech world. This week, it seems there were more folks on dope than not. Lets get to this week's accused: Buttons pissing off Cupertino Verizon “AT&T-ifying” network HP in a tough spot Bloggers speed date with Verizon iPhone Apple ditching buttons altogether? Just how far are we willing to go to believe Apple rumors? Our own Robert Nelson tells us, ” According to the details, Apple will be removing the home button from the next-generation iPad as well as the next-generation iPhone. Of course, this makes sense in the fact that we have often heard how Steve Jobs dislikes buttons.” What? No home button? No way to take screen shots, force close apps, get back to comfy home? What about the iPad 2 cases we’ve seen that did have the home button? Something is fishy. Yes, the new beta allows users to all but avoid the home button, but its a stretch to say the boys and girls at Apple got out the eraser and killed the button. The there’s the published works of Peter J. Pettinger that explore the pschology of buttons. According to Pettinger, buttons give us a home-like feeling making us feel safe. Without the home button, Pettinger postulates that anxiety levels will rise, users will begin to feel out of sync with their device, and it’s possible to trigger the onset of depression. Fine, I made up Pettinger, but we need buttons. We’ve dealt with Apple keeping all the buttons save one. Let us keep that one, if nothing more than to teach our children that one day, long ago, buttons ruled the world. We’re saved/screwed by Verizon iPhone With this weeks announcement of the Verizon iPhone, world peace seems closer, no hungry children will go to sleep tonight and cures for diseases can now take center stage. Well, it seems we overlooked that Verizon would start acting like the overgrown gorilla they are in the marketplace. Now they are reminding us. Robert Nelson again sounds the alarm, “it looks like Verizon is officially doing away with their 'New Every two' upgrade program and those currently eligible and planning to upgrade to the iPhone 4—that will be your last time using a New Every Two discount. Yup, the official cut off date is January 13th, which means that those who sign a two-year agreement from the 14th and on will no longer be getting that same upgrade plan after two years.” So we’re going from New Every Two to Jaked every Eight? It sure doesn’t have that same cachet, now does it? What if you could care less about the iPhone? Jaked. Android lover? Jaked. Holding out for webOS? Jaked. No one will get re-enrolled in the program. So thanks to the iPhone, everyone will be shelling out more for that phone after the next one. Yay iPhone! HP stuck on GO Perhaps it’s a simple misunderstanding. If you play the game long enough, you’ll see similar instances, sure enough. HP apparently thinks if they stay on GO, they’ll continue to collect $200. It doesn’t work like that boys and girls. No, you’ve got to roll. You’ve got to risk taxes, infringement on others property, and even jail (when I started this parody, I didn’t think it would cut so close to the bone). That’s how the game is played. HP didn’t get ginormous by not playing the game. So why are they so slow to move off GO with webOS? “HP's Todd Bradley recently made an appearance on MSNBC and as a result, it looks like we can expect to see a variety of tablets at their upcoming webOS event. The event is going to take place on February 9th and according to Bradley, they will be speaking "broadly about the future of webOS and the breath of products that it'll enable."” Uh-oh. Do you see the red flag in there? “Broadly”? Are you frickin kidding me? The time for broadly was when you overpaid for the Palm. The time for broadly was in the afterglow of the purchase when we allowed our imagination to get confused with your inspiration. Now is not the time for broadly - now is the time for cold, hard plastic and metal rectangles. And we need specifics: specs, launch date, pricing, carriers. Whether you’ve got tablets, phones, or dishwashers, give us the details - none of this mamby-pamby broad strokes. It’s time to finite. And that sounds to me like an MC Hammer song, “Be finite”. Bring out MC Hammer at the event. A smile comes to my face just thinking of him and far to large pants. Go Hammer. Blogger speed dating One of the things that separates bloggers from traditional media is the personal angle. Impartial is a word that just doesn’t apply. Take the latest round of blogger speed dating - let’s watch the Verizon iPhone tablet as bloggers stammer over to introduce themselves. Violet, er the Verizon iPhone, is a cute siren with the promise of a beautiful voice (connection), wears lovely red dresses and wants to be heard (can you hear me now? is her catch phrase). Here come the bloggers: Zach Epstein, BGR: Summary: Violet isn’t fast enough. Pass. “Today, however, switching from [current ugly girlfriend] to [Violet] would be like switching from broadband to dial-up — and I just can't handle that.” Dave Zatz, Zatz Not Funny: Summary: I’ve been waiting for a girl like you. Hook up. “I informally polled 11 coworkers with [ugly girlfriends], and I'm actually the only one considering a switch to [Violet]. Masochists!” Jonathan Geller, BGR:Summary: She talks! Hook up. “I just want someone to talk to me.” Geek to the core. Kelly, IntoMobile:Summary: Violet is everywhere and she’s hot. Hook up. “When the Violet launches, I will be the first in line to snag the [girl]. Yes, I realize that the [girl] will most likely be [last year’s pin up model]. Yes, I realize that [a hotter girl] may be right around the corner, but I don't care. So there you have it. Some bright folks with their fingers on the pulse of the industry and 3/4 are jumping at Violet. They don’t care if she’ll look like last year’s date or if she’ll be kind of slow (like short bus slow), she talks a lot and she gets around, what’s not to love? Anyway, in case you’re not aware, the Acer Liquid Mini is a pretty sleek-looking Android phone which is actually a smaller version of the previously released Acer Liquid phone. The Acer Liquid Mini has just reached the FCC and it looks like it might be available in the US market real soon. Its FCC filing also revealed that the Acer Liquid Mini has the 3G markings on AT&T, although it does not necessarily mean that AT&T will release it. Our guess is that it Acer might release it as an unlocked handset. Anyway, in case you’re an Acer smartphone fan and you’ve been waiting to own one of their handsets, the Acer Liquid Mini is could be a good option. Said Android phone features a 3.2-inch HVGA display, 600MHz processor, on-board 512MB RAM, and of course Android 2.2. Other details about this Android phone are still scarce as of this moment. But knowing that it has reached the FCC is enough to get our hopes high that it will soon be making the rounds of US phone stores. So, who’s getting the Acer Liquid Mini, here? No one really knows what phone the image represents, as the HTC Sync revealed the HTC Thunderbolt and the HTC Merge and then a third unidentifiable phone. It seems to be a normal looking Android smartphone by HTC but it lacks capacitive buttons making the image appear very plain. Perhaps HTC is going to revolutionize the typical design of the Android smartphone laden with four soft touch capacitive buttons. Or perhaps, it was simply a generic image included in the Sync update by accident. We’ll keep our ears to the ground if we should hear anything about another HTC phone launching on Verizon Wireless. Unfortunately, there’s only one photo yet, but hey it’s all crystal clear anyway - enough to give you an idea on how the latest BlackBerry phone may look like. By the way, the handset is tentatively being called the BlackBerry Dakota. So, what does the BlackBerry Dakota can possibly bring to the BlackBerry tablet? Let’s see - NFC feature, HD video recording, 3G mobile hotspot, magnetometer, Tri-Band UMTS, 5MP camera with flash and image stabilization, 4GB of built-in storage, 2.8-inch VGA 640x480 capacitive screen, Wi-Fi 802.1 b/g/n on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, microUSB port, Bluetooth, proximity sensor, accelerometer and more. The BlackBerry Dakota will be a GSM/GPRS/ED quad-band phone and will be 10.5mm thin. It will be running on BlackBerry OS 6.1.
