Section: Communications, Smartphones Every few weeks Google releases the numbers for Android detailing the percentage of users that are using each version of the OS. This latest set of numbers includes Gingerbread, though the number of users is very small. According to the latest numbers, just under 52 percent of Android users are on Android 2.2 Froyo. So, just over half of the users are technically a version behind. Technically because the Gingerbread update is only available on the Nexus S at the moment, so 2.2 is essentially the latest version for everyone else. Just under Froyo, we have about 35% of users on Eclair, Android 2.1. That would include most Galaxy S users, as Samsung hasn’t updated those phones yet. That leaves 7.9% running 1.6 and 4.7% running Android 1.5. Having users still running on Android 2.1 is almost excusable, but it seems downright sad that some are still stuck on 1.X. The platform changed a lot even between 2.1 and 2.2, and it’s almost completely different in terms of user experience when jumping from 1.X to 2.X. Some of those older phones are seeing upgrades, T-Mobile just announced that the last of the MyTouch 3G phones will start getting 2.2 in the coming weeks, so we could see the numbers tilt towards the latest versions soon. Hopefully Google will get around to putting Ginderbread on more devices soon. Right now only 0.4% of users are on it. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile With the Verizon iPhone looming in the distance, it looks like AT&T is trying to more directly competer with it’s biggest rival. That means changes are coming, maybe not huge changes, but changes nonetheless. According to a leaked image obtained by Gear Live, AT&T plans on changing up it’s SMS rates to be more in line with what Verizon offers. Right now AT&t offers plans of 200 messages per month for $5, or 1500 for $15 per month. Starting next week, the plans will be $5 for 500, or $10 for 1000 messages each month. The unlimited plan for $20 will go unchanged. As with other changes like this one, those who are currently on AT&T will be grandfathered in with their old plans. So if you still want the 1500 messages a month, you can keep them. Or, if you’re looking to get an AT&T phone, and want the current options be sure to sign up before January 23. It doesn’t seem like these changes will persuade anyone to choose AT&T over Verizon, but I suppose every bit helps. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see more changes from AT&T over the next few weeks and months as Verizon starts releasing LTE phones, and we see if Big Red will get the iPhone 5 when it comes this summer. Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers While this is still far from an official announcement, the sometimes correct and sometimes not so correct DigiTimes is calling for HP to begin shipping webOS tablets this coming March. As in just a few months from now. Of course, this does fit in with the original timeline from HP, however we remain a little skeptical at the moment. “The development of WebOS tablet PCs was finished in 2010, but HP will have Taiwan-based Inventec begin ODM production and shipments in March 2011 to allow for software testing and timing of launch schedules in line with market development, the sources indicated.” With that, we remind that the one bit of HP and webOS related news that is entirely accurate at the moment is that they are having a press event on February 9th and they have promised an “exciting webOS announcement.” Read [DigiTimes] Via [Engadget] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Based on the above image it would appear as if Verizon has begun training their employees on the ways of the LTE capable HTC Thunderbolt. And while that alone is good news because it suggests a release is coming sooner rather than later, there were some key points that should make some happy. To begin with, we already knew the Thunderbolt was going to be running Android 2.2, however it will also have VZW Mobile Hotspot with support to connect up to 8 devices at a time. Furthermore, this handsets will also mark a few firsts, including one with Skype mobile, one with HTC’s Sense user interface and one with simultaneous voice and data. According to the above image, the HTC Thunderbolt will be the; - First smartphone to feature HTC’s latest user interface—Sense 2.0, allowing customers to fully customize the device to their needs.
- First VZW device to feature Skype mobile with video, available post launch, which will allow customers to make video calls with friends, family, and colleagues, using the front and rear-facing cameras.
- First VZW device with simultaneous voice and data capabilities, enabling customers to browse the web and make voice calls at the same time!
Of course, that last one comes with a small catch in that the data needs to be 4G. Read [AndroidCentral] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » | |
