Motorola Atrix and HTC HD7 coming to Bell Mobility on February 10th and March 17th respectively

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Bell rumored release dates for the Motorola Atrix 4G and HTC HD7

Two new high-end smartphones are expected to launch with Bell, a Canadian carrier, in the near future.  First, the Motorola Atrix 4G, announced at CES 2011, will be sold exclusively by Bell starting March 17, if this internal screen shot is to be believed.  A March launch makes sense since Bell announced several weeks ago that it would launch the Atrix in the coming months.  The next smartphone is the Windows Phone 7 HTC HD7 which is expected to launch on February 10.  Whether you are looking for a high-end device running Android or running WP7, Bell will have you covered.

Unfortunately, no word on pricing for either of these devices at this time, but given the relative short period of time between now and their expected launch dates, I would not be surprised to hear rumored prices for either of these devices soon.

Cellular South offers up discounted HTC Desire and HTC Wildfire

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Cellular

Cellular South is spreading the love to all its customers by way of a nice Valentine’s Day offering - 50% off for the HTC Desire and 75% off the HTC Wildfire. Yes, that cheap. In case you’re not aware these two smartphones are possibly among the best and most popular Android phones released by HTC so far.

And mind you, this deal is dubbed as a Valentine’s offering but that doesn’t mean that you have to wait until February 14 to get any of these two phones. That’s because the deal starts now until Valentine’s Day. The promo even comes with free activation for those who will purchase two phones or more. But of course, remember that if you’re getting two or more phones, you’ll also be signing up for their corresponding two-year service agreements.

Additionally, if you’re an iPhone owner, you can also bring your device to Cellular South and have it traded-in with a new device for only $199. That could be a new phone with new plan or any phone accessory.

Other Valentine’s Day offerings from Cellular South include - the Motorola Milestone for only $99.99, LG Axis for $99, HTC Hero for $49 and the Samsung Galaxy S for only $199.99 with a $50 mail-in reward card.

So there, what are you waiting for? $74.99 and $19.99 for the HTC Desire and HTC Wildfire respectively are pretty great deals indeed.

Archos 48 Android tablet comes in cheap but without GPS

Section: Communications, Accessories, Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware

Archos 48

Archos has just launched a new Android tablet that will probably get a mix of reactions from most of us. The said tablet dubbed Archos 48 is not only small as compared to the usual 7 to 10 inch display of most tablets that were announced recently but it also comes with a relatively cheaper price - $299. Interestingly, we can’t say that the Archos 48 is underpowered hence the lesser price because it definitely packs in some nice specs inside.

For one, the Archos 48 is loaded with a 500GB hard drive, an 800 MHZ ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 256MB RAM, and a 4.8-inch 800x480 pixel resistive touchscreen display. One thing that you may really not like about the Archos 48 is the fact that it runs only Android 1.6 aka Donut.  It doesn’t have the Android Market preloaded as well. But, it’s not really a deal breaker since you can possibly find a way to have some Android apps and the Android Market running on this tablet via the unofficial route. The Archose 48 can also playback 720p video and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity features.

So, who’s getting the Archos 48?

T-Mobile set to lower Galaxy Tab price at $250

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

Samsung Galaxy Tab price cut on T-Mobile

According to an internal screen from T-Mobile, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is expect to receive another price for from $299 on a two year contract to $249.  No word is given as to why the price cut is going to happen starting tomorrow (January 26), but with the flurry of tablets expected to launch on T-Mobile, the carrier is probably trying to move more Galaxy Tabs by making the pricing more attractive.  The LG G-Slate, Dell Streak 7, and the possible Samsung Galaxy 2 are all expected to launch sometime soon.  The off contract price for the Galaxy Tab is $499, for anyone choosing to go the unsubsidized route.

Verizon confirms iPhone 4 data will be unlimited and $30 per month

Section: Business News, Apple, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Verizon Wireless iPhone 4

In an effort to entice possible AT&T customers and other smartphone shoppers to the CDMA iPhone 4, Verizon Wireless has confirmed to the WSJ that it will offer unlimited data plans to customers purchasing the iPhone 4 for $30 a month.  Rumors of Verizon Wireless switching to a tiered data plan still looms large as Lowell McAdam reiterated to the WSJ about its commitment to switch to tiered data sometime in the near future.  Currently, AT&T does not offer unlimited data plans to new iPhone 4 subscribers (or of any smartphone for that matter), which was a controversial move which alienated power data users and convinced many to make the switch to Verizon.

After slightly suffering in Q4 subscribers because of iPhone 4 launching on Verizon rumors, the nation’s largest carrier is looking to rebound with an impressive showing in terms of selling iPhone 4s.

Google Voice number porting now officially available to everyone

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google

Google Voice Number Porting

Late last week Google started rolling out number porting on Google Voice to a few customers as a sort of tease. Today Google has expanded the feature to everyone who can get a Google Voice number.

To port your number to Google Voice all you need to do is pay Google $20 and be willing to deal with your cellphone carrier. Porting your number to Google Voice cancels the plan you already have for your smartphone, which means the switch can cost upwards of $300. The payoff isn’t too bad, though. When the number is ported you get all the features of Google Voice without having to explain to your friends why you have a new number while the old one still works.

Right now the feature will only work if you already have a Google Voice account. New customers will be able to port their existing numbers over sometime in the next few weeks. Unfortunately you can’t use Google Voice outside of the US, and Google hasn’t announced any portion of the service in other countries as of yet.

Google looking to make your movie pick easy - buys fflick

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV, Video Providers, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Google buys fflick to get movie recommendations from your friends on twitterSlide this to the interesting column: Google is in the process of buying fflick a service that marries Twitter to movie reviews.  It is not immediately clear why Google is picking up the service whether for the what the company did or the people that work for the company.  What is clear is Google found something worth paying $10 million for.

To us, it seems somewhat clear what Google’s motives are: customization.  fflick brought your circle of friends into movie choices.  The company had previously announced they were interested in expanding to other markets and we suspect that is what Google is after.  The ability to marry your social network to any given search (movies, food, restaurants,..really any buying choice) is the next big thing.

It’s one thing to get a Zagat rating.  It’s another is your expanded circle likes a joint.  One gives you an instant connection, the other is a stranger doing the picking.  Harnessing the power of your network is something a lot of companies are interested in.

Google Nexus S spotted with white backing, expected to be available in Germany soon

For some reason or another, white smartphones seem to be a popular item. Of course, I only say that having owned several white iPhones myself. But while we wait for Apple to finally offer up a white iPhone 4 it looks like Samsung is going to introduce a white Nexus S. Though at present the when and where it may be available still remains a mystery. So far the white Nexus S is expected to arrive in Germany and should be available soon. But otherwise, nothing solid as to other area releases.

Rumor: Apple to include NFC in iPad 2 and iPhone 5

Section: Apple, Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

The details seem to just be coming out on this one, and so far they are fairly light in actual detail. Basically what we have is word coming from analyst Richard Doherty from the Envisioneering Group stating that Apple will be including NFC (Near Field Communication) technology in the “next iteration of the iPhone for AT&T” as well as the iPad 2. Furthermore, he also stated that both devices will be introduced this year. Interesting how it was spelled out as iPhone for AT&T and not just the iPhone in general, but I suppose that would be reading into what could be an innocent statement. But still, it does leave one to wonder just how different the iPhones path will be between Verizon and AT&T. Either way though, it looks like if you want an iPhone with NFC then you may be getting stuck with AT&T for now.

HTC Merge may not be heading to Verizon after all, was recently spotted with Alltel branding

The HTC Merge and Verizon release rumors were in overdrive for a little while and then just died off. Of course, they died off because of the final one which stated that Verizon had killed off the release. Well, flash forward till today and it looks like the answer to why they killed off the release has come—the device is heading to Alltel instead. But alas, the HTC Merge going to Alltel is nothing more than rumor at this point and as of now this one is pretty light on the details and come with nothing in terms of when the Merge may come available with Alltel other than a rather generic sounding “in the next month or so.”

RIM speaks about PlayBook tablet battery life, makes the awkward iPad comparison

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

While there seem to still be some concerns and questions about the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, one that seems to come up most often is in terms of battery life. And well, according to Jeff McDowell who is RIM’s senior vice-president for business and platform marketing;

“It’s going to be equal or greater than the iPad with smaller battery size,”

And there you have it. According to Jeff, the PlayBook will at least be able to beat the iPad in terms of battery life. But can we do one thing moving forward—stop comparing this to the iPad and just talk about it for what it is—an interesting tablet device from RIM.

Google now shipping the Cr-48 Chrome OS notebook with decals

While all this really means very little considering the Cr-48 is not a production model Chrome OS notebook, it does look like the new shipments are coming with a special bonus—stickers. That said, these stickers are much nicer than the product stickers that normally ship with a laptop and litter the areas to the sides of the trackpad. Of course, these, while containing some product logos seem much more decorative than anything else. Needless to say, it looks like should a Cr-48 Chrome OS notebook appear on your doorstep that you will have a bonus in the form of decals to decorate it with. Though personally, I like my Cr-48 with the sleek black look that it has straight out of the box.

Motorola Atrix 4G laptop dock may be priced at $150

Assuming we can believe that this AndroidCentral Forum poster is really the Best Buy employee that he claims to be then we may have some good news in terms of pricing for the Motorola Atrix 4G laptop dock—it is said to be fairly inexpensive. According to the forum posting, it should be priced somewhere “around 150 dollars.” And to add a little excitement to that, it will be here “sooner than we think.” Of course, that does not really give us all that much in terms of a timeline, but it does sound good. Well, good for those who may be hoping to pick one of these up. In the meantime, we are going to keep our fingers crossed in terms of that $150 price point and be on the lookout for something a bit more official.

Barnes & Noble reportedly discontinuing Nook 3G due to lack of demand

Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks

While Barnes & Noble may be selling a decent amount of Nook ereaders, it seems the Wi-Fi version is doing much better than the 3G equipped model. And rightfully so, after all, the price is much less and there is quite a bit of public wireless available these days. Needless to say, it is being reported that Barnes & Noble is in the process of killing off the Nook 3G in favor of just running with the Wi-Fi Nook. In other words, if you had been holding out or saving up for a Nook 3G then now may be a good time to start paying attention, and/or putting a few extra bucks away to make the purchase a little quicker, just in case.

Panasonic adds the ZS-10 to its Lumix ZS-series digital cameras

Section: Gadgets / Other, Imaging, Digital Cameras

Panasonic Lumix ZS10

Panasonic has just added the new Lumix ZS-10 to its ZS-series camera offerings. Since, the Panasonic ZS-10 is expected to carry on the great success of the Lumix camera brand, great expectations have been bestowed upon the Panasonic ZS-10. Fortunately, feature-wise, this digital shooter is not lucking with any great feature that you’d expect from a Panasonic point-and-shoot camera. But what makes it even more interesting and perhaps something to watch out for is its 3D photo mode.

Simply put, 3D photo mode produces a realistic 3D photo by combining 20 consecutive shots of the same subject. The camera then overlays the two best images from these 20 photos and used them to create a 3D image. You can then view this 3D image on your Panasonic VIERA 3D HDTV. The 3D image is compatible with MPO and can be viewed on other MPO-compatible display equipments including televisions, digital photo frame and even printers. Pretty neat, right?

Rounding up the other goodies that the Panasonic DMC-ZS10 is bringing in, we have a nice digital camera with a 24mm ultra-wide angle and powerful 16x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens. The camera also boasts of full-HD 1920x1080 video recording, and a 3.0-inch Smart Touch Intelligent LCD with Touch Zoom, Touch Auto Focus, Touch Shutter, and Touch Playback. Other features include - aGPS, geotagging of photos, LUMIX Image Uploader, and a 14.1MP MOS Sensor with Venus Engine FHD.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 is schedule for release sometime in March 2011. Pricing information will be available one month prior its release.
