New GPS System Boosts Accuracy To 3cm Posted: 04 Jan 2011 04:20 AM PST Existing GPS systems usually achieve an accuracy of about 10m, but that will change soon, according to a recent report in Japanese business daily The Nikkei: a new technology developed by Mitsubishi and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) improves that number to an unbelievable 3cm. This record for a non-military system was achieved during a recent public test in Japan, with a car driving at 20km/h. The car (see picture above) was equipped with a conventional GPS system, but signals from Michibiki were complementing the GPS readings (Michibiki is one of JAXA’s satellites currently orbiting Earth). JAXA and Mitsubishi claim former tests have shown their system maintains its accuracy with cars even driving up to 80km/h. The makers also say that because Michibiki can cover Japan for just eight hours a day, two more satellites are needed to provide high-quality GPS for 24 hours straight. Not too surprisingly, JAXA and Mitsubishi see the new tech used for future car navigation systems but also for advanced construction machines, child monitoring systems or travel guidance solutions. |

Kodak PlaySport Camera Gets A New Little Sister, The Playfull Posted: 03 Jan 2011 11:05 PM PST We liked the Kodak Playsport when it came out last year and this year we have a new model along with a smaller cam, the Playfull, a tiny, colorful cam for those not involved in search and rescue missions. The Playfull takes 1080p HD video and 5 MP HD stills while the Playsport takes 1080p video in up to 10 feet of water. The Playfull is $149 while the PlaySport is $180. |
Fling Brings Joystick To The Top Of The iPad Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:35 PM PST Ushering in the new era of touch panels come the lack of feeling any mechanical feedback. Just when we thought it was too late, Ten One Designs comes out with Fling, a tactile game controller for the iPad. Simply snap it down onto the iPad glass via suction cups and bam, you’re in business. It’s mostly clear, offering a mostly unobstructed view of what lies beneath. The piece that contacts the screen is made of a conductive material that has similar properties to your finger tip. Obviously, it will only work with certain games, but for many this $25 piece can be useful in the land of sans feedback. Right now you can get on the list for preorders January 6th. |
HP Announces A Slew Of New Business PCs Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:08 PM PST HP really pulled out all the stops for this year’s CES, with seven new PCs. The new (or in some cases just updated) business line covers pretty much any use you can think of, from all-in-one systems to thin client boxes, HP’s got something to sell you. |

The new machines include three new Pavilion desktop machines, as well as a new range of configurations using the new CPUs. |
HTC Scribe To Be 7″ Android 3.0 Tablet, According To Suppliers Posted: 03 Jan 2011 06:45 PM PST Just yesterday we saw a trademark request from HTC for something called the Scribe. It sounds very tablet-ish, and of course in the request itself, it’s described as a “handheld wireless device, namely, a tablet computer.” Kind of a giveaway. Well, we have a smidgen more info now courtesy of Digitimes, which reports that component makers put the size of the Scribe at 7″ and identify the OS as Android 3.0. |
Posted: 03 Jan 2011 06:21 PM PST Trend Micro released a rather interesting report about Apple’s Mac OS X, and it’s not going to make Mac users happy. The report is calling OS X the most dangerous OS to run, siting Apple’s slow cycle of patches and updates, as well as their obsession with secrecy. Apple has enjoyed a reputation as being virus free, something they played up with great glee during the “I’m a Mac” ad campaign. The problem is now that Apple is gaining more market share, they’ll become a more attractive target for malware and viruses. Trend Micro used last November’s 644mb patch as example, citing the size of the update and the fact that it took five months to be released. [via Tom's Hardware] |
Casio Leaks Its Own Multi-Angle TRYX Camera Posted: 03 Jan 2011 03:46 PM PST This kind of thing happens during the run-up to CES. Casio will be showing off this neat little camera at their press conference, no doubt, but in the meantime they’ve got it plastered all over the convention center and even had the press pics go live for a few minutes. |
PrimeSense, Them Guys Behind Kinect’s Motion Control, Are At It On The PC Posted: 03 Jan 2011 02:27 PM PST Kinect, for the most part, is pretty neat. While it's enjoyable to dance around in front of your TV, my favorite part is being able to "Minority Report" the menus. I feel so cool, demoing that. Now, PrimeSense, the company behind the motion control tech on the Kinect are bringing that experience to the PC with what they call WAVI Xtion. Name jokes aside, this is a big change in the way we interact with our machines. Even if it doesn't... |
PS3 Cracked Open Even Further With “Root Key” Discovered Posted: 03 Jan 2011 01:30 PM PST
Of course, Sony putting the cat in the bag was the reason for all this hackery in the first place. They really incurred the ire of the net when they removed the “Install other OS” option. Really, Sony, what did you think was going to happen? At any rate, this isn’t some script-kiddie tool for playing pirated games, though it will surely be used for that eventually. And it doesn’t seem to be something Sony can fix quickly — a lot of embedded software and likely already-pressed games rely on this code, so it may be that this door is open forever. [via 1up] |
Production 3DS Makes An Early Debut On Camera? Posted: 03 Jan 2011 01:09 PM PST
It looks to be substantially the same as what we tested out all those months back, but sitting it next to a DS lite does emphasize the thickness of the thing, though it has a smaller footprint. Let’s hope it’s not too heavy for extended use. I had plans for this sucker. [via Game Life] |
MiLi, A Spacey-Looking iOS Device Dock With HDMI Out Posted: 03 Jan 2011 12:46 PM PST Not too much to say here; I mean, it’s an iPad/iPhone dock. But it’s got a modern, space-age look at an easy way to put your photos and video up on your TV, so hey. |
Intel’s Sandy Bridge Processors In The Wild And Reviewed Posted: 03 Jan 2011 12:12 PM PST
I’ve just read Anandtech’s thorough analysis of the chips, and I think he’s right in recommending the i5-2500K. You’re really getting just a huge amount of performance for a bargain price ($216 as they quote it, but it will vary), and even some of the lower-end chips will do heavy HTPC duty now. Hot Hardware and HardOCP both have good roundups of current reviews (as well as reviews of their own) so give ‘em a read if you’re thinking of upgrading. |
Swann Security Releases Budget Sports-Cam Posted: 03 Jan 2011 11:07 AM PST With gadgets like the ContourHD and GoPro Hero out there, you’ve got plenty of choice when it comes to the “sports cam” category of cameras. These waterproof, mountable camcorders can take abuse and keep recording. This new one from Swann Security forgoes the HD thing, unfortunately, but the price sure is right. |
Ford’s SYNC Now In More Than 3 Million Vehicles Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:49 AM PST Ford is now insync with over 3 million vehicles (har-d-har). When debuted in 2007, SYNC was well received by Ford customers and became a big reason why people were buying Fords. Features like 911 Assist, Vehicle Health Report and SYNC services like turn-by-turn directions, weather, stocks, and sports info made the system very appealing to techies. We got to try out the newest version of SYNC, named MyFord Touch when we tested the Ford Edge Sport a few months back. Overall we liked it, but wished it were a bit faster. |
Sha-Miel: Sanyo’s Mobile Magnifying Camera Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:41 AM PST Have you ever needed to project the display of a cell phone or portable gadget on a TV or big screen? If yes, you know that this is often a pain (for example, during a presentation) – but Sanyo’s Sha-Miel [JP] might do the trick for you. It’s essentially a flexible magnifying camera for displays of mobile devices. The 0.3MP CMOS camera has been offered by Sanyo subsidiary Sanyo Precision [JP] for about a year, but the newest version has arms whose joints can be turned 360°. Users can fix the camera to the mobile device in question through a clip at the base of the arm. Sanyo claims that even when users start typing on a phone (and their hands shake), the images produced on the big screen (in 640×480 resolution) don’t shake. The made-in-Japan, 72g Sha-Miel can be used only in regions using NTSC, according to Sanyo. It’s already available in Japan where it costs $465 (ask export specialist Geek Stuff 4 U to get one for you if you’re interested). |
Lexar Media Says Bigger Is Better With New 64GB And 128GB Class 10 SDXC Cards Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:07 AM PST This is for you, Mr. I record video on an SLR. That's right Lexar is giving you two new goodies to make room for your extra long scene. Is it a coincidence that CES is also at the same time and place as the AVN adult video awards? By this time, I'd hope that there would be higher capacities and speeds, but ya know, I'll take what I can get. |
