HTC EVO Shift 4G Official Image

Just a few days ago, we saw Amazon prematurely post a pre-order page for the unannounced HTC EVO Shift 4G.  Earlier today, Wal-Mart posted a product listing for the EVO Shift 4G accompanied by specs, perhaps implying an impending announcement by Sprint.  Also, leaked images of the HTC slider smartphone in-the-wild surfaced, giving us a new batch of images to salivate over.

The rumored launch date of January 9 and the price of $149 on contract rang loud in our ears every time we saw a new rumor regarding the EVO Shift.  It was only a matter of time Sprint would announce its latest 4G capable smartphone, and finally, Sprint made it official today.  The specs are much of the same that we have already heard: Android 2.2, HTC Sense, 2GB onboard memory, FM Radio, slider QWERTY keyboard, 3.6 inch touch screen, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Sprint Mobile Hotspot.  Not to mention 4G connectivity, 5MP rear facing camera, and 720p video recording round out the rest of the specs.

Again, Sprint reaffirmed the launch date of January 9 in all Sprint retail stores and the expected price of $149 on a two-year agreement.  If you’re looking for a powerful Android smartphone with a slider QWERTY keyboard that won’t break the bank, HTC has you covered with its new 4G phone.

CES 2011: Samsung unveils the SH100 Wi-Fi digital camera

Section: Imaging, Digital Cameras

Samsung SH100

Samsung’s contribution to CES 2011 comes in the form of a new digital camera which is actually not your ordinary digital camera because of one major feature - connectivity. And when we say connectivity we mean Wi-Fi connectivity which will allow you to directly share photos over the Internet and social networks just as soon as you’ve captured them. The new Samsung camera dubbed SH100 is being geared as Samsung’s leading fully connected camera for 2011.

While Wi-Fi-enabled digital camera may not be a new stuff anymore as we may have seen a couple of them came out before, one nice feature of the Samsung SH100 is that you can connect the camera to your Android powered Galaxy S phone, letting you view the shot you’re about to take in real time on your photo. So, this means that you can zoom in and out and remotely activate the camera’s shutter using your Android Galaxy phone. What’s more, the camera even lets you use your phone’s GPS to record eactly where you are when you captured the photo.

Another nice feature of the Samsung SH100 is the facility for backing up your photos to you PC via two-button procedure or to connect directly to an HDTV via DNLA. The camera also lets you record HD videos and share it instantly via YouTube. Of course, you can also directly upload photos to Facebook, Picasa or Photobucket as well as send them vial email. To ensure connectivity all the time, the Samsung SH100 comes with a Boingo account which practically gives you Wi-Fi access to more than 200,000 hotspots.

The Samsung SH100 retails for $199.99 and will be available by March 2011.

Section: Video, Content, Video Providers

netflix one-click button

Netflix has just announced that it has sealed agreements with major brands which will place the Netflix one-click button on remote controls for select new Internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray disc players and other devices that connect the Internet to the TV. Beginning this Spring, said one-click button and even including the Netflix logo will be featured prominently on those remote controls. This will give Netflix users quick access to Netflix content on the web.

Among major brands who signed up for this agreement include - Best Buy’s in-house Dynex brand, Memorex, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Haier, and Samsung. Likewise, set-top box providers Boxee, Iomega and Roku also agreed to feature the Netflix one-click remote button on their remote controls.

With the one-click button on those remote controls, Netflix members will have an easier time accessing Netflix TV shows and movie content as it will eliminate the need to turn on the TV, go to the home screen and search for the Netflix icon. Soon, it will just be a matter of pushing the Netflix button and they can start streaming those Netflix contents.

Amazon announces plans on Kindle App for Android and Windows Tablets

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

kindle

Currently, Amazon’s Kindle App is available in seven platform, can you name each of these Kindle apps? Alright I’ll spare you the trouble, Kindle App is available for iPhone, Windows PC, Mac, BlackBerry, iPad, Android, and Windows Phone 7. And soon, there will be another one to be added to this lineup, this time around a Kindle app developed specifically for Android and Windows 7 Tablets. Amazon just announced about its plan to release this latest Kindle App.

Although Amazon did not exactly specify what the difference of the new Kindle App for Android and Windows 7 tablets will be, we’re guessing that it will have something to with the larger screen display of the tablets as compared to Android phones and Windows Phone 7 devices. Amazon just said that the upcoming Kindle app will be tailored for the particular devices and would support the usual Kindle features and services such as Whispersync technology, “Buy once, Read Everywhere,” instant 1-click buying of ebooks from the Kindle store and more.

Amazon did not specify exactly when the Kindle App for Android and Windows 7 Tablets are coming out. But with the so many tablets being readied for release especially after CES 2011, expect this new Kindle App to be out sooner than we can think.

Not at CES 2011: HTC Scribe tablet

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Laptops, Wireless

HTC Scribe Android powered tablet

According to DigiTimes, we won’t see the HTC Scribe tablet at CES this year.  The HTC Scribe is supposedly an Android powered 7” tablet destined to compete with the Samsung tab (and the billions introduced this week from both well known firms and those you wouldn’t expect such as Vizio).  Word is the Scribe will get its day in the sun later this year in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress.

HTC has been playing with Android from the start and a tablet from them would make just as much sense as one from everyone else.  Many have wondered when HTC would get in the tablet game as we’ve seen tablets shown off by Android phone builders such as Samsung and Motorola.  It looks like it just a matter of time.

So far, there is little detail about the Scribe.  We’ve seen a patent filing around the unit.  Questions such as will it have the Sense UI skin similar to HTC phones remain unanswered.

Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for answers.

iPhone 5 can't deny 4G

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile

Sprint’s Android-based Evo has held the 4G spotlight since its intro last June.  This week at CES, we expect to see a slew of 4G phones introduced during Verizon’s keynote (and possibly the Verizon iPhone variant - fingers crossed).  According to most metrics, Android will outnumber iPhones soon.

That brings us to the 4G question.  Marketers have defined the 4G network as the “latest and greatest” despite what the engineers say (todays offering is not true 4G).  Following Microsoft’s lead in getting the OS onto every manufacturers hardware, Android is everywhere and doing well.  According to the leaks from CES, this week should have us swimming neck deep in 4G Android phones.

Can a 3G only iPhone survive for another year and a half?  Apple’s annual refresh happens in June and AT&Ts 4G service is slated to begin in earnest mid-year.  If Apple holds off this year, that’s 18 months of “our phone can do 4G, yours can’t.”  How embarrassing!

That isn’t to say 4G is going to save us all.  Service is spotty and limited, to be sure.  4G devices I’ve seen still guzzle battery power like it’s butterbeer.  These are real issues that I am not sure we’ve figured out how to resolve.

What is clear is that Android will eat iPhone’s lunch if a 4G radio isn’t in iPhone 5.  Is it just a marketing ploy?  Perhaps, but perception is everything and if the iPhone is perceived as being left in the dust, makers like Samsung and HTC will be quite happy.  Not to mention Google.

Facepad, another unofficial iPad Facebook app comes available in the App Store

Some of us here at Gadgetell are big fans of both Facebook and the iPad and given that we have already mentioned the good and bad that surrounds both—notably, Facebook is not planning to release an official iPad app because “the iPad isn’t mobile.” Of course, we have also mentioned a decent alternative in the past, the Friendly app. And now flash forward till today and it looks like another option has come available in the form of the Facepad app. This app is currently available in the App Store and is available for free. Facepad is being billed as “the best way to use Facebook on the iPad” and described as being “a more friendly way of being social. Optimized for fun.” That aside though, at first glance the app does appear to have some promise, though some more hands on time will be needed before we can make a final decision. Some of the features listed include swipe-based navigation, a dedicated photo browser, external link/embedded video player and Quick Links for the Profile, Live/News Feeds and Friends.

Walmart & Netflix teamed up against Blockbuster, now Walmart will pay up to $40 million to settle

Section: Video, Video Providers

Back in 2005 it is said that Walmart and Netflix teamed up to fight agains then rival Blockbuster. According to the details, Walmart agreed to stop renting DVD’s and Netflix agreed to never sell DVD’s. But regardless, it turns out that may have been a violation of antitrust laws and Walmart is preparing to write a check of anywhere from $29 up to $40 million dollars to settle. And at present, it looks like Netflix is still going to fight the good fight and according to a Netflix spokesperson, they believe that the “lawsuit lacks merit and we will defend it.” In the meantime, it looks like Walmart will begin handing out either “cash or a Walmart.com gift card to every class member who asks for one.”

Boxee partners with Iomega, announces Boxee powered NAS device

Boxee has come forward with details on their second hardware partner. Of course, most will remember the first, D-Link and the Boxee Box. Well, the second partner is Iomega and the device is a NAS (network attached storage). At present the Boxee powered Iomega NAS device is not available, and to be specific the release is fairly generic—“later this quarter.” That said, the device will be available in a few configurations including storage free for $229 or with an option to have 1TB or 2TB of storage space for $299 or $349 respectively. Otherwise, aside from running the Boxee Software and having internal storage space available, some of the other features of the Iomega NAS include an Intel Atom CE4100 processor, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and support for Adobe Flash 10.1 as well as 1080p video playback. And just like the D-Link Boxee Box, the Iomega NAS will come with a two-sided remote complete with QWERTY keyboard.

The Easyshare Touch is a 14MP digital camera offering a 3-inch high-res capacitive touchscreen LCD, a dedicate video recording button, 720p HD video capture, in-camera photo editing tool, 5x wide-angle Schneider-Kreusnach optical zoom lens, Smart Capture and Face Recognitino technology. It will also let you use multiple scenes and artistic modes including photo booth and film effects. Of course, you can enjoy looking at the photos you’ve captured on your HDTV via the camera’s HDMI connector. This baby will be ready for you by Spring 2011 and all you have to prepare is around $149.95. You’ll even a chance to choose from the camera’s 5 available colors - silver, black, red-orange, purple and red.

Kodak Easyshare Mini camera

Next up, we have the Kodak Easyshare Mini, which as its name suggests is a digital camera about the size of a credit card. Don’t underestimate its features though just because it’s so small. This camera definitely got a lot in store for you - 3X wide angle optical zoom, 10MP, 2.5-inch bright LCD, and of course Kodak’s Smart Capture and Face Recognition technology. Best part is that it will only cost you $99.95 to get this baby by Spring 2011.

Kodak Easyshare Sport Camera

Finally we have the Kodak Easyshare Sport camera. What makes this one special is the fact that it is Kodak’s first waterproof digital camera. As such, it can go underwater down to 10 feet before it conks out. It’s also dustproof and packs in a 12MP camera with 2.4-inch LCD, Smart Capture, multiple scene and color modes. The Easyshare Sport is the least expensive of these three new digital cameras that Kodak is releasing on Spring. Price? - $79.95.
