Verizon gets confused, says Droid X runs iOS rendition of Google Maps

Verizon Wireless Droid X iOS error

It looks like one of the web design reps over at Verizon Wireless had a little too much to drink over the holiday weekend and decided to Photoshop the iOS version of Google Maps on Verizon’s flagship Android smartphone—the Motorola Droid X.

If you take a look at the image above, you will notice how the Motorola Droid X running Google Maps looks awfully similar to your friend’s iPhone running Google Maps.  I guess the person running Verizon’s holiday advertising web campaign simply forgot the Droid X runs Android and not iOS.  In any event, the image has been changed to show the Android version of Google Maps, which you can see below.

Dell Venue Pro might be shipping December 14 for $149

Section: Communications, Smartphones

Dell Venue Pro

Of all the Windows Phone 7 phones announced at launch, the Dell Venue Pro was perhaps the most interesting. It packs a 4.1-inch screen and a slide-out portrait keyboard, a rarity in phones not made by RIM or Palm. However, the initial launch wasn’t much of a launch at all, it was only available in brick-and-mortar Microsoft stores, and even then the device was hard to find. Now it looks like we may finally be close to a real, full launch of the Dell smartphone.

Earlier today Dell put up a page for the Venue Pro, only to yank it down sometime after. Thankfully, PocketNow managed to grab a screenshot of the page before it was taken down. The venue Pro page showed the device coming out on December 14, just two weeks from now. The smartphone will cost $149.99 on contract, according tot he screenshot, or $499.99 if you prefer to get an unlocked version. Buying an unlocked version, however, might not be all that useful as it will still only work on T-Mobile’s 3G network.

Hopefully Dell does release the Venue Pro around December 14 like the page indicated, instead of making us wait even longer. As mentioned before, it is perhaps one of the most interesting Windows Phone 7 phones, and it’d be nice to actually get it out to more people. It would also be a shame if the phone missed out on the entirety of the holiday buying season.

iPads being offered free with two-year contract in Japan

Section: Apple, Computers, Gadgets / Other

Softbank iPad for Everyone How does a free iPad sound to you? Chances are, if you’re like most people who don’t hate everything Apple creates, a free iPad would be great. What about a free iPad with a two year contract? Well, if that still sounds good to you, and you happen to live in Japan, you’re in luck.

Starting today, Softbank, the sole iPad carrier in Japan will start selling iPads for free with two-year data contracts in it’s new “iPad for Everyone” promotion. For the base 16GB WiFi+3G model that contract will cost roughly $56 per month for two years. Other models will cost more, with 32GB carrying $61 fees and 64GB carrying $66 in fees each month for two years. The fees also include free access to Softbank WiFi hotspots across Japan.

It seems Softbank is subsidizing the iPad because of the device’s poor sales in Japan in recent months. It seems that while sales were great at the start, when the iPad launched in the country this past June, but sales has since dropped off. Offering a device for free on a two-year contract is definitely more of an incentive to buy one, however. The only issue, of course, being that once the iPad 2 and 3 come out, users might get frustrated with their iPad 1 that’s stuck on a two-year contract.

Microsoft seems to be taking the opposite approach as Apple on jailbreaking

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

As we have recently seen, Windows Phone 7 devices have gotten an unlock tool. The program is called ChecronWP7 and it will allow the user to register the handset as a developer device as opposed to registering directly with Microsoft. That said, the real news here comes in the statement issued by Microsoft, it seems that while they are not actively encouraging this practice, they are not going to actively go against it either.

"We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable."

Of course, that does not mean that users of unlocked Windows Phone 7 devices will not see any troubles. For example, select services could potentially be blocked from use. Bottom line, with the ChevronWP7 tool available you will be able to side load apps as opposed to only being able to install them from the Marketplace. The good part here, or at least according to the word on ChevronWP7 is that the unlocking process can “be easily reversed” should you change your mind.

Motorola Olympus may, or may not be coming to AT&T in December or January

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

A short while back we saw those leaked images of the Motorola Olympus smartphone and while most of the details remain a mystery, one AT&T employee seems to have gotten a little post happy on the official Facebook wall page. The story begins simply enough, an interested user (or someone digging for information) posts the question;

“what’s the word on the Motorola Olympus?

Nothing crazy with that, however the response was a little surprising with a mention that it would be “available in December or January.” Sounds good, but, it seems that message stating the release timeframe was quickly removed. With that, as of now the official statement reads as follows;

"This response was posted erroneously. We don't have any information to share about upcoming devices."

Bottom line, the Motorola Olympus may or may not be coming to AT&T in December or January.

Windows Phone 7 purchases go retroactive BOGO with AT&T, previous month purchases now eligible

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

AT&T began offering Windows Phone 7 handsets as buy-one-get-one free as a part of their holiday sales and it looks like there is some good news for those who had previously purchased a device. The details are coming from the @windowsphone Twitter account and suggest, read, suggest that if you made a purchase anytime in the last 30 days you can revisit AT&T and get another Windows Phone 7 device for free. Granted, that free phone will still require a two-year contract so it is not entirely free. Bottom line here, according to @windowsphone there is “good news if you bought a #WindowsPhone from @AT&T in the last 30 days—contact ATT to see if you qualify for their recent BOGO offer.”

Rumor: Microsoft to roll-out "massive" Windows Phone 7 update in January

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Twitter seems to have become a popular spot for yet-to-be-confirmed Windows Phone 7 stories as of late and assuming this latest is true then current users will have something nice to look forward to seeing in the coming year—an update. According to what we have seen so far, the update is said to be “massive.” And while that along sounds interesting enough, it is being further described as how the update should be called Windows Phone 8. Granted, that may be a bit overstated, however the update is rumored to include goodies such as copy/paste, custom ringer support and “some form” of multi-tasking. The other perk comes in with navigation and is said to be improvements and turn-by-turn.

Droid 2 Global comes available with Wirefly, priced on-contract at $79.99

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Droid 2 Global comes available with Wirefly, priced on-contract at $79.99

As of late, the official release of a smartphone with the carrier is nice to see, however the release with third party retailer Wirefly is generally better news. Well, better news for those who can wait a few days in order to spend much less. That said, this has happened recently with the Droid 2 Global which has been available with Verizon Wireless for $199.99 which comes AFTER a $100 mail-in-rebate. And as of now that same handset is available with Wirefly for $79.99 with no mail-in-rebates—just a flat $79.99. Furthermore, Wirefly is also throwing in free FedEx shipping. Of course, the catch with the Wirefly pricing is that the lowest price is sometimes only available for new customers and such is the case with the Droid 2 Global. The price for those looking to renew/upgrade is $119.99. Otherwise if you have an existing account and are simply looking to add on a new line of service the price remains at $99.99. All said and done, both prices are still much lower than direct with Verizon.

Acer Liquid Metal Android phone may hit the US market soon

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Acer Liquid Metal

It looks like we might be seeing a new Android smartphone arriving on the US mobile market soon. Well, that would depend on the outcome of the evaluation being conducted by both AT&T and T-Mobile on the new Acer Liquid Metal smartphone.  A senior Acer official said that his company is now looking into the possibility of releasing this smartphone after it was deemed worthy to be released in Canada earlier.

Brighthand.com is reporting that the possibility of the Acer Liquid smartphone being released via AT&T or T-Mobile looks great since the device is well suited under the two mobile carriers. For your information, the Acer Liquid Android phone happens to be a GSM phone, and only AT&T and T-Mobile are the two GSM carriers in the U.S.

The question is, does the Acer Liquid smartphone have something that we should all be excited about? Well, that depends on your preferences. The Acer Liquid features an 800 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen display in 800x480 resolution, 5MP camera, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It also boasts of an special app called Social Jogger. Said Acer smartphone also support DLNA/UPnP so you can easily link it up to your PCs, TVs and game consoles. It will be available in silver and brown colo design.

So, would those features be enough to get you excited about the release of the Acer Liquid to the US?
