Section: Computers, Software / Applications Some good news for Windows users looking for a good password management app—1Password has left beta and is now officially available for download and purchase. The app is priced at $39.95, though to kick things off it will be available at $10 off. In other words, if you purchase now you can get it for $29.95. In addition, for those afraid to commit before trying the app out, there is also a 30 day trial available. As for the app itself, I can say one thing for certain—1Password is responsible for making me use better (and unique) passwords. Granted, they did not actually make me, but instead they helped me because the 1Password app is easy to use and can go with your on your iPhone and/or iPad. In other words, I finally started using unique and harder passwords because I was able to securely have that information with me on my phone at all times. Plus, they are also working on an Android app, just in case you are not sporting an iPhone. The phone will be the first Gingerbread smartphone with all the hardware bells and whistles to accompany the new OS version’s features. It all sounds similar to how the Nexus One was launched. There is one big difference between the Nexus One and the Nexus S: how the phones are sold. The Nexus One was sold online only through Google. Google has learned from that effort, and will be selling the Nexus S through retail giant Best Buy. Starting December 16, Best Buy will carry the latest and greatest Android smartphone. Like the Nexus One, you can buy the Nexus S unlocked without contract for $529, or for $199 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile. For UK users, the phone will go on sale on December 20 at Carphone Warehouse, though the price hasn’t been announced. This time prospective buyers will be able to actually feel the device, and possibly even play with it before buying. With any luck, the Nexus S will fare better than the Nexus One in sales. We all know how poorly the Nexus One did in terms of sales, which some attributed to the fact that the phone was only available online where the average buyer wasn’t able to hold the phone and get a feel for it. I guess if nothing else, this quick roll-out of Android 2.3 is a perk of having a handset with a pure-Google experience and in turn this should show those considering a purchase of a Nexus S that they will be taken care of in terms of future upgrades. Bottom line, while many other Android smartphones are still trying to get Android 2.2, those on the Nexus One are staying one step ahead with an announcement and roll-out all in the same day. [Update] According to Twitter user @retomeier, the Android 2.3 update is not rolling out, but instead coming in a few weeks. “Not sure where Engadget is getting their reports. The Nexus One OTA isn’t happening just yet - should be coming in a few weeks.” Via [Engadget] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Web, Downloads, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Web Apps, Websites, Google Google has just strengthen its presence in the ebooks market as it launch the new Google eBookstore. Since then we have not heard anything about it, until now. Said phone was reported to have reached the FCC table, and the document filing even comes with several new photos of the Windows Phone 7. Another new development regarding the said phone is the fact that it bears the 850/1900 MHz bands which is what AT&T is using. Also the said FCC document for the Asus E600 indicates that the Windows Phone 7 device might have a 4-inch display, a 5MP camera with LED flash, and it might come with a a 1300mAh battery. Design-wise, said phone has a brushed metal chassis with a slim form factor. Other things that were indicated by the FCC document include a volume rocker, camera key, microUSB port, lock/power key and 3.5mm audio jack at the topmost part of the phone. Incidentally, in case you already forgot, the said Asus Windows Phone 7 device was already used by Microsoft developers when they were still testing Windows Phone 7. To help you remember, check out the video after the via link. Of course, you know the drill right? With the device already on the FCC table, it might just be a matter of time before we get a US release pretty soon. Today Google finally formally announced the Nexus S, the first Gingerbread phone, designed to take full advantage of Android 2.3. Where the Nexus One was built by HTC, for Gingerbread Google went to Samsung to make the “pure Google” Nexus phone. The result is the Nexus S, which bears a few similarities to the Galaxy S lineup. Like the Galaxy S smartphones, the Nexus S features a 4-inch 480x800 Super AMOLED screen. The Nexus S screen is contoured, with a curved glass screen that bends in at the center, and bows out towards the top and bottom of the device. Google is also touting the NFC hardware included in the Nexus S which lets users get information from smart tags in signs, posters or anything else that might have them. From how Google is describing NFC so far, it seems like a QR code without the need to use the camera. The possibilites for the tech are much more interesting, with NFC possibly eliminating the need for credit cards among users sometime in the future. The Nexus S is also the first Android phone to feature a gyroscope, just like the iPhone 4 has. It will be able to enhance gaming on the platform with more 1:1 movement. Inside the phone, the Nexus S has 16 GB of onboard storage space, a 1 GHz Hummingbird CPU, a 5MP back camera capable of 720p video and a front-facing VGA camera. The specs are all in line with what you’d expect from a high-end smartphone at the moment. Looks tobe a great upgrade for Nexus One users on T-Mobile, where the Nexus S supports 3G and the network’s “4G.” Unfortunately for AT&T users, the Nexus S only supports 2G on the network. Personally I have been using Friendly for a while, and I think I paid $2.99 for the app at one point. Well, the good news today is that there is now a free (ad-supported) version of Friendly available in the App Store. Of course, for those wishing to ditch the ads, there is also a second version available for $0.99. And for those wondering, Friendly is actually a rather nice way to use Facebook on the iPad. Some of the features include being able to swipe through Facebook photos at full screen, chatting with friends and being able to upload and download images. Still, the basics are there such as viewing and writing on walls. But there is also a few other perks including the ability to customize the colors as well as securing the app with a PIN code system and support for multiple accounts. If nothing else, the new free version is a nice way to download the app and make sure you like it before you commit to buying. And as a bragging right of sorts, this means the Sprint and the Epic 4G have become the first Galaxy S handset in the US to get Froyo and at least for the moment means that Epic 4G owners will have the latest and greatest. Of course, we also expect Android 2.3 to get announced sooner rather than later so that latest and greatest may be short lived. Still, Android 2.2 should be rather nice on the Epic. Anyway, for those using an Epic 4G and looking for directions, you can hit the ‘via’ link at the bottom of this post. While only users of the premium service will be able to download the app, the app is compatible with Blackberry Curve and Bold models and requires Blackberry OS 4.5 or 5.0. The app is free. Plaxo is like a magic address book in the cloud. The service reaches out to your contacts pages (Twitter, Facebook, and dozens others) to keep the contact info fresh and updated. When your contacts update their contact info, say on Facebook, Plaxo makes the change as well. Plaxo for BlackBerry joins apps for iPhone and Android. The iPhone app, which looks to be the cream of the crop, requires no premium service and is free. The Android app requires the premium service and Gmail sync. As of today you can score the Droid Pro for $49.99 from Best Buy Mobile or $19.99 from Amazon Wireless and/or Wirefly. Of course, all three places require the usual two-year agreement with Verizon, but otherwise they are all nicely discounted. That said, we would lean towards Wirefly because they are also throwing in free shipping. Except that unlimited messaging seemed to had been removed from the plan description on the T-Mobile website back in November and that left many wondering. Well, in a little bit of a good news follow-up, the unlimited messaging is still available. In fact, according to the T-Mobile PR Team it should never have been removed in the first place. Bottom line, if you purchase a Samsung Galaxy Tab online with T-Mobile your plan will include messaging. And for those who may have purchased from late-November till now, you may want to call T-Mobile customer service just to make sure the messaging is on, or if not, is added to your account. Apple showed off the white iPhone 4 during the phone’s preview but to date, has been unable to deliver it. Rumors suggested the color matching (white vs. ecru vs. egg shell vs…) was keeping the variant from consumers hands while other rumors suggested the color had been flat-out cancelled. The signs going up in stores say, “the white iPhone will be available Spring 2011.” It doesn’t get more clear than that. Is there more to this story? Only if you look at the dates for Spring. Spring 2011 starts March 20. Spring 2011 ends on June 22. Apple usually updates their new iPhone in June and in fact, launched the iPhone 4 on June 24 of this year. Could it be that the White color will be part of iPhone 5? We won’t even get into a Verizon-only rumor….
