Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Peripherals, Mice / Keyboards It looks like a few upcoming Palm / HP details have been leaked, sadly though, they are just in the form of a codename and Bluetooth keyboard. That said, it is still better than nothing. As for the codename, it looks like the still yet to be announced Palm tablet is going by the name of “Topaz” at this point. Of course, that will change once the product becomes official and hits the market, but at least for now, webOS fans can remain on the lookout for information on the Palm Topaz. And in addition to the tablet codename, we also have word of a keyboard that will marry up with the tablet. As for the keyboard, it is noted as being Bluetooth and having low profile chiclet keys as well as “webOS function keys.” Via [Engadget] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Computers, Software / Applications A South Korea based developer known as Nabix has created an app that imitates a girlfriend. The app, titled Honey, It’s Me, sends users phone calls from a virtual girlfriend. Nabix hired a 22-year old South Korean model to record over 100 voice messages for the app. The software will call users three to four times a day with messages ranging from “good morning” to “time to wake up.” Unfortunately to all of us that are spending the holidays without a significant other, the app currently speaks only in Korean. Since its launch on Nov. 30th, the Honey, It’s Me has received over 80,000 daily downloads on the iTunes store. Eventually, the free version of the software would change to a $1.99 price tag which steadily decreased the downloads. “I’ve developed this application to console people for their loneliness,” Nabix leader Kim Yoon-Kak told AFP. Although the developers may have good intentions with the Honey It’s Me app, what kind of affect will this have on younger generations? Seeing as how gadgets are already so deeply rooted within youth culture, children and preteens might actually think of this application as a substitute for a real girlfriend. Pretty soon, an app like this will come out that will be geared towards females. And considering the high volume of downloads Honey, It’s Me had, this could be a strong indication as to how lonely and obscure youth across the world might be. And while it is pretty entertaining to watch, I sort of get the feeling that Chad D really wants a Chrome OS notebook. Hint to Google on that one. Anyway, it is the weekend and what better thing to do than spend a minute and a half being entertained with a rap video about Google on YouTube. Well, truth be told I can think of better ways, but needless to say—I still watched and I still laughed. That said, for those wondering what About.me is, think (for lack of a better word) homepage. It is a nice location where you can claim your username and have a www.about.me/username page online. The service is fairly simple and allows you to customize with a background image (mine is a beach here in Tarpon Springs, Florida) and add some links to websites as well as services that you use. Plus there are also stats in the form of views, clicks and links to you as well as more detailed items such as the average time spent on your profile, the total views and the percentage of new visitors. With that, hit the read link below to claim your about.me username, you know, before someone else does. Granted the whole thing seems a little strange, almost like Yahoo! wanted the tech press to rant about how much they would miss the social bookmarking site, but that aside. The latest details come from a posting over on the Delicious Blog and suggest that Yahoo! may be shopping the site around for a new home, but at least for now they have no shutdown plans. Ah, crisis averted, you can now resume sharing links with Delicious. With that, hit the ‘read’ link at the bottom of the post to read the complete message, but the two most important parts seem to be; “No, we are not shutting down Delicious.” and “We're actively thinking about the future of Delicious and we believe there is a home outside the company that would make more sense for the service and our users. We're in the process of exploring a variety of options and talking to companies right now.” Read [Delicious Blog] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers Thanks to a recent price cut, US Cellular now has the lowest priced Samsung Galaxy Tab in the US market. The tablet is now as low as $199.99, though there is a catch with that pricing. In order to get that you will need to sign up for a two year agreement on a 5GB per month data plan. Those data plans include an option for $54.99 or $74.99, both of which include 5GB of data and the higher priced includes unlimited messaging. The $54.99 per month plan bills any messages at $0.25 each. Oh and, this price comes after a $100 mail-in-rebate. In addition, the Galaxy Tab can also be purchased with the smaller 200MB per month data plan however in this case you will still pay $399.99, which comes after a $100 mail-in-rebate. And just for reference, the 200MB plans are priced at $14.99 and $34.99 per month with the higher of the two having unlimited messaging. That said, while the 5GB on-contract price with US Cellular is now less than T-Mobile for the device itself, I am still thinking T-Mobile is a better deal in the long run. After all, the monthly data price with T-Mobile is $39.99 and that comes with both 5GB of data and also unlimited messaging. A few days ago the company launched Reading Life, a social reading experience for the iPad. Today Kobo is adding popular service Instapaper to it’s app for iOS. In the iOS Kobo app Instapaper is displayed alongside other books on the digital book shelf. Opening the “book” let’s you choose from articles to read like you would select chapters in a standard book. The reading experience is exactly how you’d imagine it, the articles are displayed as books are on the app, and tapping the edges of the screen will go forward or back. You can also change the same scrolling view you’d expect from the Instapaper app, if that’s more natural to you. The implementation seems a bit buggy, the app crashed on me a few times while I was trying to test the feature. Still nice to have Instapaper alongside your eBooks if you use Kobo. In addition to Instapaper, the latest app update als allows iPhone and iPod touch users to Like books and share passages of books with friends through Facebook. It’s one of the features that iPad users get through Reading Life, and one of the most sensible ones.
