| | Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones In the continuing Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 saga, a leaked internal Sprint memo informs Sprint employees that the Epic 4G Froyo update is on hold and will be available in the near future. The memo advises customers to repeat this information to any customers wondering when the Epic 4G will make the jump from the old Android 2.1 to the newer Android 2.2. If you remember, the Android 2.2 update for the Epic was supposed to commence the day after Christmas, but that also turned out to be just a rumor. Samsung promised an update to Android 2.2 across all Samsung Galaxy S models in the United States, but it is choking on its words at the moment. We will continue to report all rumors as they break, but hopefully we can promise an Android 2.2 update timeframe for the Epic in the near future. However, as of a few days ago, the App Catalog finally reached the 5,000 app milestone of official apps only. Let’s put this number in perspective: in October the iOS app store contained 300,000 apps, Android today contains around 200,000 apps, and even Windows Phone 7 contains around 5,000 apps and it just launched a few months ago! webOS, unfortunately, has a long way to go if it wishes to contend with the other mobile OS’s. The new price is $999.99, which comes by way of a $450 instant rebate. But how they got the price aside, the Envy 13 comes with features to include a 13.1 inch display with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, 1.60GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL9300 processor, 3GB RAM, a 250GB hard drive and is running Windows 7 Home Premium. In addition you will also find other goodies such as Beats Audio, an external SuperMulti DVD drive, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/g/n, Bluetooth, 4-cell battery and a total weight of 3.68 pounds. CES 2011 is going to be a big time for Verizon Wireless, as it is expected to announce several LTE Android smartphones. However, for the past several months, rumors of Verizon Wireless finally landing the coveted iPhone from Apple have been more frequent than usual and CES 2011 has been pinned as the date for the iPhone on Verizon launch. Unfortunately, Verizon came out today and stated CES 2011 will provide “a sneak peek of Android-based 4G LTE consumer devices” and the spokesperson failed to mention the iPhone. Yet there is still a glimmer of hope Verizon will launch the iPhone because Apple usually likes to announce their own products and their own events, and would probably not like to announce something this monumental at a giant consumer electronics convention. In any case, we should expect several LTE Android smartphones from some major manufacturers (Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and LG), but we should not expect to see the iPhone announced on Verizon Wireless just yet. And sure, that is not quite as exciting, but at the same time you have to remember that WP7 is a brand new market and a brand new operating system. Not to mention, when you compare this to the progress that we have seen with webOS and the App Catalog it seems to speak wonders. And just for the record, webOS topped 5,000 after 18 months—Windows Phone 7—2 months. With that, the WP7 Marketplace history of milestones is as follows; they reached 1,000 on October 25th, 2,000 on November 8th, 3,000 on December 1st and 4,000 on December 15th. And interestingly enough, wpcentral is reporting that more than 1,100 of those apps are games—so much for a Windows Phone being all business. A new Sony Ericsson phone was allegedly leaked out by some guy over at IT168. What’s interesting to note here is not just the fact that the phone closely resembles the Xperia X10 Mini Pro but also the fact that the phone is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Exciting, isn’t it? Aside from the leaked photos, the source also said that the said Sony Ericsson phone will be running on a 1GHz processor with an Adreno 205 GPU with 1,553 score on the Quarant benchmark app. In case you’re interested to know, that score is close enough to what the just released Nexus S got when subjected to the same evaluation. In addition, said phone will sport a 3-inch 320x480 multitouch LCD. But what’s interesting to note here is the fact that if you will look closely at the photos of this phone, you’d noticed that the buttons are in reverse order of the Xperia phone layout. So, what do you think? Is Sony really prepping up a successor to the X10 Mini Pro? If this is indeed true, any guesses on when this phone will come out in the open? The details are coming by way of AndroLib and in addition to the total number of apps they have also included other goodies such as how the Market is now seeing over 25,000 news apps added every month and perhaps a little more staggering—total app downloads have topped the 2.5 billion mark. Of course, like any other app market, it is not necessarily about the total number but more about which apps are included. Still, with 200,000 available it seems to go without saying the most, if not all of the major players are already included. The “start-stop” technology is said to cut gas usage by 4% in most cars. This new feature works by shutting off the car’s engine each time the driver comes to a halt. The engine will then start back up automatically when the driver begins to accelerate. How efficient this will be at stop signs is beyond me. “For the driver, Ford Auto Start-Stop provides extra fuel efficiency without inconvenience, as it works completely automatically,” said Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of powertrain engineering. “And, just like in our hybrid vehicles, the heater and air conditioner work as normal so drivers will not sacrifice comfort.” The start-stop technology is already available in the Ford Fusion hybrid, Ford Escape hybrid as well as some European Ford models. Will this fuel saving tactic catch on with other automobile manufacturers in 2011? It is good to see that an American automobile company is first in making a technological stride towards the future. It’s advances like this which will hopefully one day provide a decent sized buffer on our pockets. $40 a tank is pushing it in my book. Well, with thanks going to the crew over at Droid-Life we now have just that—a complete and clear series of HTC Thunderbolt 4G images. What can you really say, the Verizon branding is there, along with 4G LTE and the “with Google” logo. In addition there is the large touchscreen display, four Android style touch sensitive buttons, a camera with LED flash and a kickstand that appears to cover a speaker. Ok, that last bit seems a little strange. That said, check out the images here and then hit the ‘via’ link below to check out the full set. And one thing is certain, this keyboard looks unlike any we can remember seeing. Otherwise, the Cliq 2 will have a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 3.5mm headphone jack and the latest in terms of Motoblur. The one remaining question comes in the form of Android and which version will come with the Cliq 2. Most suspect it will be running Android 2.2 Froyo at launch, but given the timing of the release there is always the possibility that it could arrive with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. That said, our money would be on Froyo. While many are, this one shoots for the trade show in February, Mobile World Congress. This time we have rumors of Samsung announcing the follow-up to it’s Galaxy S lineup. The Galaxy S2 is rumored to be fairly similar to the specs seen in the Nexus S, with one major difference. The Galaxy S2 is said to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, have NFC support and a gyroscope just like the Galaxy S. Unlike the Nexus S, The Galaxy S2 will supposedly run on a dual-core processor. That should be no surprise, Samsung has talked about dual-core processors set for mass production in 2011 in recent months. The big question now is will the Galaxy S2 have the Nexus S’ Contour Display? We have seen countless details and mentions leading up to this post, however it now seems to be a given that the handset will be released on January 9th and that it will be priced (on-contract) at $149.99. That said, these latest details have come by way of this leaked Radio Shack flyer. I guess at this point the only thing remaining is to sit tight and wait for the official announcement to come from Sprint. In the meantime, I guess now would be a good time to start setting some cash aside because January 9th is approaching quickly. The devices in question are the Motorola Cliq 2 and the Dell Streak 7, both of which are expected to be officially announced during CES and then (according to the rumor mill) be released on January 19th. Time will tell, and while we wait for something in terms of pricing, not to mention, something official we can tell you that the Cliq 2 is expected to be running Android 2.2 and sporting the MOTOBLUR user interface. As for the Streak 7, this will be a 7 inch tablet style device with Android 2.2. The Xnote P210 is a 12.5-inch ultraportable with what looks like on the smallest bezels on a laptop ever. While the bezel is small, the rest of the laptop isn’t exactly the most exciting. It packs an Intel Core i3 or i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 320GB HDD and Bluetooth 3.0. The bezel across the top of the screen hides a 1.3MP webcam, which cames as no big surprise. The screen size is a big strange, 12.5-inch isn’t seen very often. Pair that with the small bezel, and it could be hard to find something that’ll fit the laptop snuggly. The Xnote P210 will be available in Korea for the equivalent of about $1100 to $1200, and come in both white and pink. There’s no Western announcement yet. If LG plans a Western launch for the P210, next week at CES would be a great time to make that announcement.
