Section: Will Verizon Wireless finally get its much desired iPhone 4 units this coming January? Some people think so right now, especially right after a Digitimes report indicated that Apple has raised its iPhone shipment target for first quarter of 2011. Previously, the shipment target was at around 19 million units to be shipped starting Q1 2011. But now, this was raised to around 20-21 million units, according to Taiwanese sources. What makes the news interesting is the fact that 5 to 6 million units of those shipment will be CDMA iPhones going to North America and Asia Pacific. What is not clear though is how many of those shipments will be Verizon iPhones. Would the shipment of CDMA iPhone be enough to give Verizon a piece of the iPhone US market share and poses a threat to AT&T’s stronghold? That would be interesting to watch out for. As for the remaining volume shipment of around 14-15 million units, these are earmarked as WCDMA iPhones - indicating the fact that demand for the iPhone is still strong after several months of being released to the worldwide market. In case your interested to know, Apple was able to ship a total of 47 million units of iPhone in 2010. So did you get the iPhone 4 as a Christmas present? Or are you waiting for the iPhone to arrive on Verizon? An unannounced, but long-rumored 7-inch Dell tablet passed through the FCC, with a CES announcement seeming probable. The Dell tablet, codenamed Looking Glass, comes complete with a SIM card slot, with bands indicating it will work on both T-Mobile and AT&T. Next to the SIM card is an SD card slot, both hidden beneath and attached door on the back of the device. The only other specs we know of the device are that it has Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR and 802.11n WiFi. Nothing too special there, though. The Looking Glass looks like it could possibly be the Dell Streak 7 we saw earlier in the day. Either way, it looks like we should expect an announcement from Dell next week at CES. That means we get to start hearing companies brag about how well their products did during the holiday season. As has become to norm, Amazon has announced a series of facts about the products it shipped, including the new Kindle becoming the company’s best selling product ever, displacing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.” The exact number of third-generation Kindles sold is unclear, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that the sales are in the millions. Book 7 of the Harry Potter sold 8.3 million copies at release alone, with Amazon pre-orders topping 1 million. Considering the fact that the book is now number 88 on Amazon’s Topp 100 Bestselling books, a few more million is easy to imagine. It should come at no surprise then that both the WiFi and 3G models of the Kindle were the top two best selling products on Amazon this holiday, with the closest gadget being the 8 GB iPod touch. Along with the Kindle device stats, Amazon announced that on Christmas day more people downloaded Kindle apps and bought Kindle books than any other day in history. Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” was both the most purchased and most gifted book on Christmas day, adding more Kindle sales the the already record-setting series. Currently, every AT&T phone comes wrapped in driving with the phrase “TXTNG & DRIVING… IT CAN WAIT.” Now AT&T is taking the next step, distributing a 10 minute documentary about the dangers of texting and driving. The documentary is free, and will be distributed to schools, safety organization and government agencies to reach as many people as possible. The documentary is called “The Last Text,” and has eight volunteers talking about how texting and driving has affected them. It’s all pretty powerful stuff, and well worth a watch when you have the time. The video is available freely from AT&T on it’s own “It Can Wait” page, or on AT&T’s YouTube channel. You can also watch the video below in this post. The obvious message is for teens, as most of those affected are teenagers, and most of the accidents involving texting and driving involve teens. Don’t let that distract you from the matter at hand in the documentary, as it really applies to everyone with a cellphone and a car. Granted, if you are an Ally owner/user then that seems like a fairly long time to wait, but on the positive side, at least you know Froyo is coming. "A Froyo OS upgrade, will be available to all LG Ally handset users in February, 2011." Sadly though, nothing more specific than that. Not to mention, its a bit of a sting considering Android 2.3 Gingerbread should be rolling out to some by that point. Of course, that is the on-contract pricing. In addition, the handset will be $549.99 contract free and $299.99 on a one-year agreement. That said, these details have come by way of an internal Best Buy system and could still change. Actually, while we hope they will remain where they are, we cannot help but feel it is inexpensive, especially as compared to the closely spec’d Epic 4G which is still a bit more. Especially with the holidays, Samsung is running many ads in New York City alone. On Christmas Eve, I was walking through the city and Times Square with my family and I noticed a few things. On the way to New York, I noticed several billboards with the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but as soon as I ended up in Times Square, I noticed the biggest ad of them all. If you take a look at the picture above, you will see what I am talking about: the Samsung Galaxy Tab sprawled over a building for all in the nearby vicinity to see. On the right side of the ad, it shows a warning “Do not sit on the Tab.” In the ad, the Tab is displayed in a person’s back-pocket, to emphasize its portability. It’s just amazing how much advertising is used in the city, especially during the holidays when consumers are vulnerable to advertising. The handset has recently been listed on the company website showing an “voraussichtlich lieferbar ab” (expected to be available from) timeframe of January. Unfortunately nothing more specific than that though. Not to mention they still need to offer up something in terms of a price. That said though, the listing does give something to look forward to and that comes even nicer knowing that wait time will be relatively short. Furthermore, if you are willing to go with what AT&T is calling a phone with a “cosmetic blemish” you can save a few more bucks. The blemished 16GB iPhone 4 is $79 and the blemished 32GB iPhone 4 is $179. Of course, as you would expect—all come with a two-year agreement. For instance, today AT&T has slashed the refurbished iPhone 4 price to $99 on the 16GB model and to $199 on the 32GB model. Both price cuts are $50 in magnitude. However, if a “cosmetic blemish” doesn’t cause a look of disgust to cross your face, then consider a $79 16GB model or a $179 32GB model. For those wondering, refurbished simply implies returned or exchanged iPhone 4s that the AT&T staff personally tests to make sure it meets quality standards and then they are sold under refurbished.
