HTC EVO Shift 4G image and release date leaked

HTC EVO Shift 4G

One of the hotter Android phones to be rumored as of late is the HTC EVO Shift 4G.  AS the name implies, the EVO Shift 4G bears strong similarity to the popular HTC EVO 4G, but with a shift element—a QWERTY keyboard.  The slider keyboard is a 4 line keyboard, and the image above depicts its keyboard and screen inside a protector case.  The second part of the leak has to do with its potential release date.  According to an internal screen shot, the HTC EVO 4G Shift is expected to launch January 9, which coincides with the previously rumored launch date of January 6.  Naturally, it should run on Sprint’s 4G network, making it another top-notch Android offering from Sprint set to join the Samsung Epic 4G as another slider device.  Hopefully we will have more details soon in terms of specs and pricing.

Google creates website to teach parents how to use tech

Section: Web, Websites, Google

Teach Parents Tech

The holidays are here again, which means it’s time to visit the family. For many of us, that means it’s time to be asked everything about the web, smartphones, or anything else tech-related. For others, we deal with those questions all year-round. Today Google has launched a website to make those conversations a bit easier.

The new website is called TeachParentsTech.org. The site features a number of YouTube videos to teach people how to perform what most of use would consider relatively simple tasks. Examples include “How to set up an email auto-responder,” “How to copy & paste,” and “How to set up a blog.” The videos are all about a minute or less long. The videos can be found on YouTube, or sent in an email through the web form on the website.

Seems like a great idea, as long as you can get your loved ones to their email to see the videos. It might not solve all the issues your loved ones are having, but at lest it’ll prevent you from having to explain the simpler tasks over and over again.

Verizon Wireless CEO hints at possible family-shared data plans

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Data plans are a pain for just about everybody, they usually cost quite a bit, and at times you end up paying for more or less than what you actually need. Those with family plans are especially hurt by the fees, having to pay separate data plans for each phone. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the new CEO of Verizon Wireless hinted that the company could make those plans easier for users.

Daniel Mead, the CEO of Verizon Wireless, mentioned in the interview that Verizon does offer shared voice and messaging for family plans, and that the company might offer shared data in the “not-to-distant future.” He called the option “account-level pricing,” which is hopefully something we’ll be hearing more about soon. On the subject of data plans, Mead also that Verizon might offer “metered pricing” someday, but the company hasn’t agreed on it yet. “Metered pricing” would allow users to pay for the speed or amount of data they want from the network.

Also in the interview, Mead talked about how he believes LTE could serve as a substitute for DSL, especially for those users in rural areas. With LTE he expects Verizon to be selling a lot of smartphones and tablets, with up to 300-400 percent market penetration, or roughly 3 to 4 devices per person. Lofty goals, for sure, though if LTE proves to be as great as we’re being led to think it will be, he might not be that far off. Now, if LTE could reach real 4G speeds, it could replace even most cable modems, but that’ll have to wait for another time.

Pantech P8000 Android phone gets the FCC love

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Pantech P8000 FCC

Making an appearance at the FCC is a new smartphone bearing the Pantech markings - the Pantech P8000. Based on the document filed, it seems that the Pantech P8000 maybe heading towards AT&T’s way.  Baring any official announcement from the phone’s maker for this, the Pantech P8000 will most likely support GSM/EDGE 850/1900 and WCDMA 850/1900 which makes it more certain that it will be an AT&T phone.

Aside from this, the FCC document also revealed that the Pantech P8000 both has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios. Unfortunately, unlike other devices that reached the FCC, Pantech forgot to include an image of the device. What we have is a rendering of the device illustrating that it will be a bar-style phone with camera on its back.

As for the phone’s OS, we’re pretty sure it will be running perhaps Android 2.1 or 2.2 at the least. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group recently approved this phone and described it as a “Pantech Android Smart Phone.” Unfortunately, the FCC documents submitted did not confirm nor deny this. Still, we’ll place our bet on the possibility that this will be another Android phone for AT&T.

MetroPCS offers up the Huawei Ascend Android phone

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

metropcs huawei ascend Just in time for the holidays, MetroPCS has started offering the Huawei Ascend smartphone. If you’re a MetroPCS customer or you’re eyeing to get a new smartphone under MetroPCS contract, the Huawei Ascend is a good entry-level phone that should get you oriented with the power of the Android platform.

The Huawei Ascend Android phone runs on Android 2.1 aka Eclair OS, just about the right starting point if you’re transitioning from a feature phone to a smartphone. It gives you nine customizable home screens for organizing and getting quick access to widgets, shortcuts, apps and social networking sites. So, if you’re looking forward to updating your Facebook or Twitter statuses while on the go, the Huawei Ascend will let you do these right on the phone’s home screen.

MetroPCS is offering the Huawei Ascend under its various smartphone plans which starts at $50 per month with no annual contract. The Huawei Ascend will set you back for only $179. Great price for a decent Android phone with the bells and whistles of a full-featured Android phone, in my opinion.

Other features of the Huawei Ascend device include - a 3.5-inch HVGA auto-rotate touchscreen with virtual QWERTY keyboard, 3.2MP camera and camcorder, and easy Wi-Fi connectivity.

Gadgetell Review: EcoSmart x3000 Portable Power Supply from InoSmart

Gadgetell Review: EcoSmart x3000 Portable Power Supply from InoSmart

What is being reviewed?

Up for review today is the EcoSmart X3000 “multifunction portable power supply” which as we have to disclose, was provided to us by the company for review. Needless to say, any and all opinions are entirely ours and not influenced in anyway. With that, the EcoSmart X3000 is a portable battery pack/charger that retails from anywhere from as low as $60 and up to $70. In regards to that pricing, Newegg and Amazon respectively.

The specs

The battery pack measures in at 3.66 x 2.48 x 1.0 inches and weighs 5.64 ounces. The X3000 contains a 2200 mAh battery, has a life cycle of 500 plus charges and is sporting four USB ports, a fold-out AC plug, solar panel, USB power indicator light, battery power indicator lights, an LED flashlight and a blue LED “nightlight.” The kit also contains a travel bag, car charger adapter and a wide variety of cable and device connectors.

My thoughts

Initially I thought the device was a bit cheesy. After all, who needs a wall power and solar power battery charger that also has an regular and blue LED light on it. I did not think it was me, and while I will say that I did not often use the solar functionality, the ability to charge multiple devices at the same time was rather nice, and while not super in terms of four at once, it was helpful to be able to charge a phone and MP3 player at the same time. And as much as it pains me to say it—the lights, both the LED flashlight and the blue LED “nightlight” came in handy on multiple occasions. As for using the battery, I would bring the charger in and plug it into the wall for a quick power up, and then for the most part kept it in my car and used it while on the go. That of course, is where the flashlight came into play, on the go and in a dark parking lot where I dropped my key on the ground (next to the car). Another nice use case for me was (again) in the car, but this time it was with charging and not dropped keys—thanks to the ability to plug in four USB ports I was able to plug the battery into the car power adapter and still charge up my phone along with my daughters phone and iPod touch.

The bottom line

All said and done, if you need an external battery pack that will charge multiple devices then this should at least be one to consider. Personally I was more than happy with the performance and feel a $70 price tag is fair, especially given all the included cables.

Palm Pre 2 shows its face in Rogers Wireless stores, complete with $299.99 price tag

We have already known that the Palm Pre 2 was coming to Rogers so this latest appearance is not surprising in that the handset was spotted, but surprising because of the price tag that was sitting next to it. Yup, those hoping to pick up a Pre 2 with Rogers are going to need to be prepared before they purchase—the price is not cheap—$299.99 on a three year agreement. With that, we can only hope that this is a mere place holder, or something that was put in place in hopes of someone getting a photo and word spreading to bring some attention. After all, while $299.99 sounds a bit high, we also cannot help to notice the no term price listed—$914.99. Wow.

And the highest grossing app is: MLB.com At Bat 2010

Section: Video, Content, Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

Forget Angry Birds, forget those $999 bar exam apps; the winner of this years highest grossing app has been awarded to MLB.com’s At Bat 2010.  The app brings live video of every major league game plus extra features.  The app earned the top rank across the all categories of paid applications for 2010 while the iPad version of the app was rated #1 in the sports category.

The seasonal app costs $15 during baseball season and connects to your MLB.com account.  During the off season, individualized team news is offered to users at no charge.  Currently, the app is free.

At ball parks, the app is useful for showing maps, seeing schedules, stats and more recently, ordering food thanks to a partnership with Aramark in Philadelphia.

One final stat: during this year’s postseason, the app was accessed over 37 million times.  Impressive for an app in its second year.

Leaked images: Motorola 10-inch Android tablet with Verizon branding

It looks like specs and images of that 10 inch Motorola tablet have been leaked. Granted, the images are slightly blurry, but that is not to say they are terrible. That aside though, there is the Verizon logo sitting on the top right hand corner, of course—no real surprise on that respect. Otherwise, the other specs include a 10 inch multitouch capable display with a 1280 x 800 resolution, 1GHz Tegra 2 T20 processor, 512MB RAM, 32GB internal storage and microSD card slot. Other specs include a microUSB jack, mini-HDMI, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a pair of speakers and dual LED flash for a camera of unknown megapixels.

Breaking: Google Latitude back on iOS App Store

Section: Gadgets / Other, GPS/Navigation

Google Latitude now available for iPhoneThe little app is available again in the app store.  After being available for a short time, the app was pulled for unknown reasons.  It is back now with the same zero fanfare coming from Google.

The app was one that was blocked by Apple, citing the need to avoid confusion with the Maps app.  As Apple’s stance has relaxed, perhaps thanks the FCC looking over Apple’s shoulder, more and more Google apps have found their way onto the app store.  Another example is Google Voice.

The app is free and runs on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3rd and 4th gen iPod touch and iPad.

Verizon announces Kin Studio is shutting down January 31st

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

It looks like Verizon has officially and finally given up on the KIN, and the shutdown of the KIN Studio is set to take place on January 31st leaving any KIN users with a dead handset. Well, not entirely dead, the phones will still be able to send and receive calls, get email and use the Zune Pass. And while that sounds like it is not all that bad, here is the short list of things it will no longer be able to do;

  • Feed Reader will stop working
  • Search Near me will stop working
  • Posting Photos to social sites will no longer be possible
  • Most pictures currently on Kin will only appear at thumbnail resolution
  • Posting to Social Networks will no longer work.
  • No comments from the loop
  • Social network contacts will disappear.
  • Loop will stop to work
  • Kin Spot will only send to emails.
  • Social networks only accessed from web browser.

Given this we are now really confused as to this previous attempt from Verizon at a re-launch. Oh well. With that, Verizon is going to be taking care of those who did make the purchase and will be offering a free 3G phone in place of the KIN. The offer for a free phone will be in effect until the end of March so you still have some time. That said, the details of this are in the process of being sent out to the KIN owners, so if you happen to fall into that category, be on the lookout.
