Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Plume Twitter Android app If you’re not using the official Twitter Android app, well I guess you’re probably using other third-party Twitter clients. Any chance that you’re using this Android app called - Touiteur? If you do, well don’t be surprised when you get the update of the app and it no longer goes by the name Touiteur but Plume instead. According to Level Up Studio, the change in the app’s name was due to the fact that Twitter contacted them requesting for them to change the name of the Twitter Android app. According to Twitter, the app’s current name create a confusion with their service.

Once you’ve updated the app on your Android phones, the next time you post a tweet, it will not be sent to the Twitter timeline “via Plume” instead of “via Touiteur.”

The change in the app’s name has also been reflected in the Android Market when the new version of the app was released. And since we’ve mentioned about this new version, here are the changes made by LevelUp Studio to Touiteur, I mean Plume Android app.

  • rename Touiteur to Plume
  • add native retweet support in the widgets
  • add the possibility to import saved settings from the wizard (after installation)
  • add the delete/replies/share/clipboard functions from the profile view
  • faster and more reliable picture cache
  • general speed improvements (less lag)
  • fix occasional loss of connection for 15 minutes
  • fix the profile picture preview size
  • fix the scrollable widget counter update
  • fix do not reorder the follower/following list
  • fix show when the tweet is sending in the widget
  • fix some translations

Plume Android app is now available for download from the Android Market. Remember, search for Plume instead of Touiteur.

The Sidekick LX kinda lives on in Canada

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Mobile

Mobilicity Mobiflip

In the US the Sidekick is dead, both the phones and the platform. In Canada the phone known as the Sidekick LX is now being launched, albeit it with a different name from a brand new company.

The company that’s launching the phone is Mobilicity, a Canadian startup. The phone is called the Mobiflip, and is launching for CAD $99.99 (US$98). It’s not clear if Danger will be supporting the phones. Surprisingly given the price the Mobiflip is contract-free.

Mobilicity is touting the Mobiflip as a perfect talk-and-text phone, just as the Sidekick LX was. The press release goes on to talk about how the keyboard is perfect for web browsing, email and instant messaging, though that would likely mean getting a data plan.  For a plan that includes data, users will be paying CAD $40 per month (US$39), which isn’t a bad price at all.

AT&T carrier billing added as Android Market payment option

Yet another carrier has been added in the Android Market and is now supporting carrier billing. The latest is AT&T, who have joined T-Mobile.

“Today, I am pleased to announce the availability of AT&T Direct Carrier Billing for Android users on the AT&T network. AT&T Android users can now easily charge their Android Market purchases to their monthly accounts with only a few clicks. With the combination of Android Market's new app discovery features and a carrier-backed frictionless payment method, users will find it significantly easier to discover and purchase applications of their choice.”

And in addition to this payment update, the latest version of the Market will include other goodies that we have recently learned about such as the new categories for dynamic wallpaper and widgets and the 50MB apk size limit as well as the not so good 15 minute return window.

Survey says: People can't live without broadband

Survey says: People can't live without broadband

Surprise. According to survey results from Zogby Interactive (which polled 1,950 adults) 28 percent of the users polled claimed broadband internet being the main technology that they cannot live without. The second place winner was email coming in at 18 percent and Google following in third place at 10 percent. The results of the survey varied greatly by demographic. For example, Facebook trailed behind with a mere 3 percent while 15 percent of the youngsters (the 18-24 crowd) claimed that Facebook was an absolute necessity in their life. Judging by the number of status updates I see in my news feed, I can verify the validity of this statistic.

The poll also questioned what people consider to be the future of technology. 43 percent of the polled believe that human organ creation via stem cells will be prevalent by the year 2020. 24 percent believe that the most profound technological advancements will come by way of home entertainment. Imagine where 3D will be in another 5 or 10 years. New and emerging technologies such as 3D could spell a complete revamping of the way we view media. With all of these stats flying at you, it should be easy to see that the future of technology points to further facilitation of daily tasks and more heavily integrated means of communication. I mean, look what Microsoft Kinnect is already capable of doing.

I Am Rich app makes an appearance in the Windows Phone 7 app Marketplace

Once upon a time there was a $1000 app available in the iOS App Store, it was called I Am Rich and needless to say—it was quickly pulled by Apple because it did nothing more than cost lots of money. Well, in a little bit of a surprise move that app has made another appearance, but this time it has landed in the Marketplace and is available for those sporting a Windows Phone 7 handset. And instead of a $1000 price tag, it has arrived bargain priced at $499. Or course, as it turns out, Marketplace apps cannot be priced higher than $499 so I guess it is not really bargain priced after all. Wonder how many will accidentally make this purchase?

Photos, comments and check-in widgets added to Foursquare for Android

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

foursquare android app Foursquare is not going to let down on their Android followers this Christmas Season. After adding photos, comments and some other nifty features to their Foursquare iPhone app, the same were added to the Android counterpart. If you’re using your Android phone to access check-in to places via Foursquare, hit that update button from the Android Market to get Foursquare Android app’s latest version.

After updating your Foursquare Android app, the next time you want to check-in, you can now attach photos related to a place to make your check-in activity more meaningful to your Foursquare friends and other Foursquare users. You can attach photos of practically anything - food, menus, ambiance and more.

Another new feature is the addition of commenting feature. Everytime you check-in you can now add comments aside from creating tips about a particular place. Who knows if a friend happens to be at a nearby place, you can set a meet-up via the app. You and your friends can also start a discussion centering on the particular place where you are checking-in. You can share tips on what food to order and the likes.

In addition to these two new features, Foursquare for Android also now lets you visit your history page on Foursquare.com. This will enable you to see all the places you’ve checked-in, including photos and comments made of specific places.

All those new features were the same with what was introduced a couple of days ago for Foursquare iOS apps. What sets the Android apart is the addition of two new Foursquare widgets which you can add to your homescreen. These two widgets lets you check-in quickly and see your friends’ latest activity.

The updated Foursquare Android app is available now from the Android Market. Have fun checking-in this Holiday Break, folks!

Samsung SCH-I520 smartphone, looks like Android 2.2.1 Froyo & LTE will be heading to Verizon

It looks like some details have leaked on an upcoming Samsung handset. The model is the SCH-I520 and it is expected to arrive with Verizon Wireless. So far there is nothing solid as to when that may happen however after seeing some of the specs it seems like it will be worthy of the wait. The SCH-I520 is going to be running Android 2.2.1 and have support for the Verizon LTE network. Other details suggest that it will have Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, a front facing camera and perhaps most exciting for the Bing haters—it will not be a Bing Android handset. Between this and the rumors of the LTE-capable HTC Incredible HD it looks like Verizon is going to have their hands full.
