Cricket to unveil Muve Music unlimited wireless music service in CES 2011

Section: Audio, Communications, Cellphones, Mobile, Web, Online Music/Video

Cricket Wireless Muve Music

Unknown to many of us, Cricket happens to be the first US wireless carrier that offered unlimited wireless rate plan. Now, the company wants to be the first again, this time in offering wireless rate plan with music service. Cricket just announced the debut of its new Muve Music service during the CES 2011 on January 6, 2011.

Cricket managed to collaborate with music industry’s top labels including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music to have their respective music content available on Muve Music catalog. Also joining the collaboration to bring this wireless music service into fruition are Samsung Mobile and SanDisk.

Muve Music will be launched on the Samsung Sude, a 3G multi-media device with a full 3-inch touchscreen display, HTML web browser, virtual QWERTY keyboard and an easy-to-use interface. What makes this phone appropriate for the Muve Music service is its dedicated music button which is prominently displayed on the front of the handset. This button will take you to the Muve Music service via one touch. Storing DRM-free music on the Samsung Suede is made possible of course in collaboration with SanDisk.

Are you excited now about this new service from Cricket? Wait, it doesn’t come free of course. If you’re eyeing to use this service you might want to know that the Muve Music will be available for $55 per month with the following features - unlimited nationwide calling, nationwide text, picture and video messaging, global text messaging, 3G mobile web, email, data back up and video. It will also allow you to enjoy unlimited full track downloads, ringtones and ringback tones anywhere you are in the U.S.

Motorola Droid 2 available as certified pre-owned for $129 on contract

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Web, Websites

Motorola Droid 2 Certified Pre-owned

Ever since the Motorola Droid 2 Global edition entered the Verizon Wireless scene, the original successor to the Droid has taken a back seat.  Unfortunately, many people don’t really have any use for a smartphone with global capabilities, making the Droid 2 an attractive option.  In case you would rather purchase a Droid 2, instead of the newer and slightly faster Droid 2 Global, you now can.  Verizon Wireless is offering the Motorola Droid 2 as a certified pre-owned device for $129 on contract.

Even though certified pre-owned implies the Droid 2 has been pre-owned, the units Verizon offers are typically in great physical shape and work as billed.  With the $129 contract, you will receive a one year warranty and the customary 30 day return policy.

Free calling in Gmail extended for another year in 2011

Section: Communications, Email / IM, VoIP, Mobile, Web, Google

gmail

Do you use Gmail’s free calling service? Or have you used it this 2010? If you do, then you’d be glad to know that Google is extending this free calling feature for another year. Yes, you can continue enjoying free calling for the whole year of 2011. This is Google’s way of thanking users who stood by Gmail this year and have continously use the service. As a reminder this free calling feature applies only to Gmail users in the U.S, while users in other countries get to enjoy lower rates than other VoIP service.

And in case you haven’t tried this service yet or are not aware of what it is, allow us to inform you that this service which was made free in 2010 by Google lets you make free Internet voice calls right inside your Gmail account. You’d know that this service is activated if you see the “call phone” icon at the top of your Gmail chat list. You can click on this icon to start dialing a Gmail contact’s number or directly enter the phone number of the Gmail user that you want to call.

This Gmail service can also be used for video calls for free. And yes, like I said international Gmail users get to enjoy discounted rates on international calls using this service. Apparently, this is cheaper than Skype international calls.

Anyone tried using this free calling in Gmail? How did the service goes?

Motorola Hits on iPad, Galaxy Tab with new Android Tablet teaser video

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

I really want to know how Apple will react to Motorola’s subtle attack on the iPad via a new teaser video of its upcoming Android Tablet. The new video which was made for public viewing today features a historical look at the tablet, citing as far as the Rosetta Stone up to the iPad and Galaxy Tab. What’s interesting about the teaser video is that while presenting the different forms of table made available to mankind through the years, a brief text appears identifying the tablets’ weaknesses.

So for iPad, Motorola’s attach was about Apple’s magical device being like a giant iPhone, or yes - it is a giant iPhone - pertaining to the fact that the iPad and the iPhone share similar functionality and features except for the fact that the iPad can’t be used as a regular phone. As for the Galaxy Tab, Motorola also hits on Samsung’s OS which happens to be Android. This makes me wonder why Motorola subtly attack this wherein fact their Tablet will also be running on Android OS.

Another interesting feature of the video is the appearance of a bee towards the end. Does this has something to do with the tablet’s final name? Would it be called the Motorola Buzz? Or does this bee signifies something else? We’ll see about that and more of the Motorola Tablet during the CES 2011 where it will be officially launched in time for a rumored release in February.

In the meantime, enjoy the video.

Pictures and comments added to Foursquare iPhone app

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Web Apps

Foursquare

As a Christmas gift to its millions of users who patiently checks-in everytime they visit new places (those fans include me), Foursquare has updated their iPhone app bringing in two of the most requested features from users - photos and comments. Through partnership with top social photo sharing sites - Instagram, PicPlz and Foodspotting, the whole business of checking-in to Foursquare becomes more fruitful since these photos will greatly enhance the suggestion feature of this iPhone app.

So now, if you use Instagram, everytime this app pushes a photo to Foursquare, that photo automatically becomes a check-in with photo. While sightings you made using the app Foodspotting will be considered as check-in with food photos. The same goes true for Picplz.

As for the comments feature, Foursquare will now let you improve your day by informing your friends that you’re around the corner and you can invite them to drop by the place where you are. It will also be useful for putting last-minute comment that will remind you to order the best dishes in town. In addition, tips with photos will help you make the right decision on which place has the best-looking food venue or even in identifying a hard-to-find spot. What’s good about the updated Foursquare iPhone app is that it allows you to visit your history page on Foursqure.com - allowing you to look back at the places you have been-including photos and comment.

And soon to follow photo sharing to Facebook and Flickr - which is an easier way of keeping track of all the comments you’re getting. Soon, there will also be a useful place for storing your old photos.

The updated version of Foursquare is available now from the App Store. Simply hit that update button on your iPhone iTunes to get the update.

Sprint launches 4G service in Denver, Colorado and Bridgeport, Connecticut

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Sprint Logo

Just before the holiday traveling frenzy begins, Sprint has launched 4G service in two new markets.  As of today, if you live in Denver, Colorado or Bridgeport, Connecticut, then you will be able to access Sprint’s 4G wireless network—assuming you have a 4G capable device.  The 4G capable devices on Sprint’s network, thus far, are the HTC EVO 4G, the Samsung Epic 4G, and the Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot device.

4G is touted as 10x faster than 3G service, making it a desirable cell phone network for most people.  Unfortunately, it is only available in 70 markets so far, but Sprint will keep on adding new markets throughout the rest of 2010 and into 2011.

ViewSonic G tablet getting pulled from Staples due to "manufacturing defect"

ViewSonic G tablet getting pulled from Staples due to manufacturing defect

It looks like the ViewSonic G-Tablet has been pulled form the Stapes lineup. The details are coming courtesy of a leaked recall memo which is showing the G-Tablet as being pulled due to a “manufacturing defect.” Needless to say, it looks like the ViewSonic G-Tablet is in the process of being pulled from the stores shelves so the extra stock can be returned. The sad part here is this may cause some angry customers as it looks like the tablet was set to be featured in this weeks sale circular, but worry not because store employees are instructed to “print apology signs.” And lastly, probably for the better, Staples is noted as not having a “comparable product.”

Best Buy removes restocking fee on all electronics except special orders

Section: Audio, Video, Communications, Computers, Gadgets / Other

Best Buy Logo Being able to make purchases with the peace of mind knowing that you will be able to return it for a full refund makes shopping a lot easier.  However, Best Buy, in the past, has enacted a policy called the restocking fee, which charged 15% on general electronics and 10% on phones if you decided to return it.  As you can imagine, customers would only purchase things they knew they needed, because who wants to lose money on a purchase that you end up returning?

I use the phrase “in the past” because Best Buy has recently announced that it has removed the restocking fee.  The new policy was effective December 18 and will continue from here on out.  In case you have any last minute Christmas shopping to do, Best Buy wants you to shop with the peace of mind knowing every purchase will be fully refunded.  The full announcement can be read below:

Best Buy continually listens to our customers, and they told us they want to give confidently this holiday season and every other day of the year — and with that comes easier returns. Effective Saturday, December 18, Best Buy is improving its return policy by removing restocking fees for all products except special orders. Customers can visit BestBuy.com for further information.

Best Buy iPad Anywhere: Buy an iPad get a free MiFi Mobile Hotspot modem

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

Best Buy iPad Anywhere: Buy an iPad get a free MiFi Mobile Hotspot modem

It looks like Best Buy has taken a queue from Verizon as to how to sell the iPad—paired with a MiFI Mobile Hotspot modem. The new offer which just began showing up at Best Buy appears to be dubbed iPad Anywhere and means you can purchase either the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB iPad and you will also get the modem—for free. The offer has a few modems available including service from Verizon, Sprint or AT&T. And coming a little nicer than the Verizon offering, Best Buy is giving the modems away, well, giving them away for free on two-year contracts anyway and in that respect Verizon has a leg up considering their iPad and MiFi combo is contract free. But hey, sometimes spending less cash up front is nicer. With that, it looks like this offer is already underway and is set to expire just after the new year, on January 2nd.

Carphone Warehouse reduces the price of Google Nexus S before release

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

nexus

What’s this? The Google Nexus S is just to about to be released in the UK via online retailer, Carphone Warehouse and yet its price was already reduced? If you remember a few days ago, the Nexus S was supposed to be released in the UK on December 20 for a hefty price of £549.99. Translated to US dollars that’s around $820 almost $300 more than that contract-free units being sold from Best Buy stores ($529). So now, it’s down to around $669. Still more expensive but still a good deal for our friends in the UK who are eyeing this Google Phone.

No reason was cited as to why Carphone Warehouse made the price reduction. Although, I have a feeling that the store gathered some feedback from the UK crowd or possibly based their decision on how the Google Nexus S sale went in the U.S. There’s no official figures as to how the first day of sale in the U.S. went but it may not be that good.

So there you go UK folks. There’s still time to pre-order the Google Nexus S before its release on December 20. If you don’t feel like spending that much on a contract-free unit, you can also get the Nexus S under various contracts with Vodafone UK.

Rumor: Sam's Club to offer iPhone 4 for $147 & iPhone 3GS for $47 until December 25th

If you are still looking for a deal on an iPhone and happen to also be a member of Sam’s Club, you may want to check with them before purchasing an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. According to the latest in the rumor mill, Sam’s will be offering the iPhone 4 at $147 and the iPhone 3GS at $47 this week (both come with the usual two-year agreement). Well, this week with the offer expiring on December 24th at 12:00AM. So far the details on this ‘sale’ have been made available by way of leaked image.
