Google enables Gmail delegation to anyone

Section: Communications, Email / IM, Web, Web Apps, Websites, Google

gmail delegationGoogle seems to be giving Gmail some attention lately. After giving out second chances to accidentally deleted Gmail contacts, here’s another nice feature which will be very useful for those who maintain multiple Gmail accounts or for those who wants to share their accounts to somebody else. The new Gmail delegation allows you to authorize another Gmail account from accessing another Gmail account. So, instead of logging out from one account to another you can open both simultaneously.

This feature wil be most helpful when maintaining a shared email account for a family or group of individual Gmail users. It’s also useful for managers and bosses who want to give their assistants access to read or reply to email on their behalf. This feature can be setup via your Gmail Settings tab. Open the “Accounts” tab and simply select the newest option labeled - “Grant access to your account.”

Once you’ve given access to a Gmail account to another Gmail account, a verification email will be sent to the Gmail account you’re sharing access with. Once accepted, the email address of that account will be displayed at the top right corner of Gmail. You can then toggle between these two accounts. From now on, every email that you send from the shared Gmail account will have a notation indicating that the email was sent on behalf of your other Gmail account.

Confusing? You’ve got to try it out to make it simpler to understand.

Gadgetell Unboxing: Google Cr-48 Chrome OS notebook

Coming as a late afternoon delivery, UPS just dropped off the Chrome OS notebook, the Google Cr-48 and while I am sure you have all seen pictures before—I still wanted to share my pics. And who knows, maybe I managed to capture something that someone else missed. Anyway, check out the images in the gallery below and keep an eye out for more Cr-48 / Chrome OS coverage in the coming week.

In the meantime, I can share the set up process with you, and lets just say this redefines simple. After the unboxing, you open laptop and it begins, there is no need to even hit the power button. From there you see the Chrome logo and then it goes into the Let’s Get Started screen where you select the language and choose network. From there you accept agreements and then the notebook goes into checking for updates (actually had to install something, which was followed by a restart). Just for the curious, the notebook was at Chrome OS version 0.9.110.9 and it came back at version 0.9.128.12.10.12.10. Then after the reboot (which is super quick) you sign in with your Google credentials (Gmail account), take your picture and begin to play. Oh and there is a nice “welcome to the pilot program” letter from Google that you see when you first begin.

Again, I have not played long enough to offer any opinions, however I already use numerous Google services and am a regular Chrome user. That said, I am thinking I may enjoy this.

MetroPCS rolls out LTE in three new markets

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

MetroPCS Samsung Craft LTE phone
Verizon may have all 38 NFL cities covered by LTE by the end of this year, but it isn’t the only carrier that’s been busy trying to roll out LTE. MetroPCSis trying to build out it’s own LTE network, and today it adds three new cities to it’s LTE coverage map.

Starting today MetroPCS users will be able to use LTE in New York City, Boston and Sacramento. The addition of these three cities brings MetroPCS’ LTE coverage to a total of nine cities. Plans for those who want to use the carrier’s 4G coverage are $55 for unlimited talk, text and data, which apparently includes all taxes and fees. Not a bad deal at all.

MetroPCS has only one phone so far that supports LTE, the Samsung Craft. The Craft has a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen, and a slide-out landscape keyboard. It seems the OS is Samsung’s TouchWiz, which could mean no apps, though it has social networks built in. It’s not a bad phone, but it could be better. The phone will run $299, but at least with MetroPCS you’re not locked into a two-year contract.

Telus extends free HTC Desire offering till December 31st

Telus extends free HTC Desire offering till December 31st

It looks like Telus has kept the free HTC Desire offer in place until the end of the year. The latest details call for the Android handset to be free for those willing to sign a three-year agreement and will be in effect though December 31st. Certainly not a bad deal, and for those looking to shorten that three-year commitment a little bit there is always the option to pay $349.99, $399.99 or $449.99 for a 2 year, 1 year or contract free offering. Needless to say, while three years is a long time to commit to a smartphone these days, your best bet is probably to go the free route.

Time Magazine names Mark Zuckerberg Person of the Year, Why not Facebook?

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Web Browsers, Online Music/Video

Mark

I’m pretty Time awards the prestigious Person of the Year plum to groups of people or community. That’s why a few years ago, the Time Person of the Year was YOU, meaning us - the Internet population, and not the inventor of the Internet. I don’t know, but this thought came into my mind when I read about Zuckerberg named as the Person of the Year, why not Facebook and the millions of Facebook members which can be collectively known as the Facebook Community. What gives?

Don’t get me wrong here but I’m a big fan of Zuckerberg and the story of how we created Facebook.  I also believed that Facebook really did change the way we live our lives, as what Time announced when Zuckerberg was named the Person of the Year. Quoting Time Magazine:

For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year.

Yes, there’s no question that we owe the creation of Facebook to Zuckerberg. But its popularity should be owed by Zuckerberg to us - the Facebook community for making it a vibrant ecosystem of humans worldwide - interacting, communicating, transacting businesses, sharing silly thoughts about their everyday lives.

But then, who are we to question Time Magazine. It’s too late to say our disagreement to their choice, so we might as well congratulate Mr. Mark Zuckerberg for creating a network that added new meaning to our lives.

How about you folks? Do you have qualms about TIme Magazine naming Mr. Zuckerberg as Time Person of the Year? Please share your thoughts with us by leaving a comment.

Motorola Cliq 2 appears in US Patent & Trademark Office filing, suggest T-Mobile release coming soon

Motorola Cliq 2 appears in US Patent & Trademark Office filing, suggest T-Mobile release coming soon

While T-Mobile was originally expected to release the Motorola Cliq 2 back in September, that never seemed to happen. Needless to say, the follow up to the original Cliq is still expected to make an appearance and this latest filing from the US Patent and Trademark office seems to hint that a release is coming sooner rather than later. The listing is an opposition filing, which is basically one of the last steps before a trademark is issued. Anyway, this obviously does not say when the Cliq 2 will arrive, but things are looking good for anyone that has been holding out. Otherwise, since its been a while, a brief recap on the specs seems to be in order. The Motorola Cliq 2 will arrive with Android 2.2 and Motoblur along with other perks including 3G mobile hotspot and Wi-Fi calling.

Rumor: HP to release webOS tablet in March

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

According to the latest information on the still-fabled webOS tablet—it will be arriving in March of 2011. The details are not yet officially announced, which means those interested will need to keep their excitement in check for now. That said, the March timeframe is coming by way of BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman who has stated that the details are coming based on a recent trip to Asia where he met with “more than 30 tech-related companies.” Sadly though, and another reason to keep the excitement in check, according to Forbes, Bachman is noted as not being “overly optimistic” in terms of how well the webOS tablet will do as compared to some of the current tablet offerings. Needless to say, I am sure webOS fans will be happy when they can finally make a purchase.
