Energy Literacy Platform: Track And Turn Off Household Appliances With Your Phone

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 04:21 AM PST

Using the web to track power consumption at home is something several companies are working on at the moment (including Google). Tokyo-based startup Sassor is developing a solution that offers two big selling points: their so-called Energy Literacy Platform (ELP) [English link] lets you track each household appliance individually and makes it possible to turn these devices off remotely, for example by pushing a button on your smartphone. The Energy Literacy Platform is based on the idea that by empowering consumers with a tool that informs them how much energy their appliances really use, they will start saving energy. The platform consists of three parts. Read the rest on TechCrunch.

Bezel Obsessed LG Announces World’s Thinnest Bezel For The Xnote P210

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:50 PM PST

LG’s notorious obsession with having thin bezels is well known, and they are continuing that vein with their new Xnote P210, a notebook computer with a 12.5 inch screen and what they say is the world’s thinnest bezel on a laptop. The other features don’t necessarily stand out as much, but at least they are trying.

The stats are underwhelming, with a 1.33GHz Intel Core i5 470UM, 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. The graphics card is a disappointing integrated Intel HD chipset. Currently, the Xnote P210 is currently only expected to appear in Korea, but it’ll be available this coming February for $1,135.

Russian Government Computer To Run On Linux By 2015

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 07:00 PM PST

Tired of dealing with the legal hassles with Microsoft, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has ordered that all government agencies will be running on open-source software by 2015. Russia has a rocky relationship at times with Microsoft, and started this whole process by first proclaiming that schools will run only open-source software, and now proclaiming that the government would follow suit.

The Russian government will start a pilot program to ease the transition to open-source software during the second quarter of 2012, with the goal of having everyone running Linux by 2015. In the past there’s been political resistance to moving to open-source software. Given the fact that Prime Minister Putin has decreed that the government will go to Linux, that political resistance is no longer a factor.

CrunchDeal: Buy One, Get One Half-Off On 600 Games

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 06:30 PM PST

Chances are you didn’t get all the games you wanted this holiday season. Fear not! Amazon has a deal going right now where you can buy one game, and then get the second game for half-off. There are about 600 titles in this deal, so here’s your chance to go pick up that copy of Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2.

There are some pretty good titles in the list too: just a quick look shows Bioshock, Fallout 3, Plants Vs. Zombies, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition. Remember, it’s buy one, get the second one half-off. Of course, the “buy one” is probably on sale as well, so it’s a double deal!

LG LW6500 Passive-3D HDTV To Be Shown At CES

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 06:29 PM PST

Yesterday we heard LG would be showing off the world’s largest (for now) 3D LED TV, and today they tell us they’ve got a 3D TV coming, the LW6500, that doesn’t use active-shutter LCD glasses (thank god). I’m beginning to feel used as a blogger — they’re clearly trickling information out for maximum effectiveness. So to spite them, I’m going to write very little here other than that I think passive/polarized 3D is way superior to active-LCD, and they’re on the right track.

We’ll get a hands-on at CES, don’t you worry.

iPhone 4 And Accessories Top eBay’s Most Wanted For 2010

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 05:51 PM PST

In rather unsurprising news, the world’s most popular smartphone was the most popular item on eBay this year — or rather, it was likely the most popular search term. I suspect a vast majority of iPhone 4s were bought by more traditional means — but accessories like cases, headphones, and car kits thrive in the eBay environment.

The rest of the items seem to follow larger trends, but incredibly, only one item is shared with last year’s list: The Beatles.

Here’s the rest of the eBay “Top Shopped” items list.

1. iPhone 4
2. Barbie
3. Military jackets
4. Hot Wheels
5. iPad
6. World Cup
7. The Beatles
8. Silly Bandz
9. Alice in Wonderland
10. New Orleans Saints

iPhone 4 and related items totaled 1,634,674 sold. The runner up, Barbie, sold 1,178,909. And Hot Wheels, 748,140! Hell yeah, I love Hot Wheels. Good for them. And Barbie, I guess.

Suit Against Apple Alleges Privacy Breaches By Apps

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:41 PM PST

Here’s a bit of a sticky situation: Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit alleging that they are allowing apps and ad partners to identify specific users — a breach of Apple’s privacy policy and supposedly of privacy itself.

Apple’s privacy policy touches on this directly, yet leaves plenty of room for movement on their side, which is really what the suit is all about, though Apple is simply the biggest target at the moment. The lawsuit alleges that the “non-personal information” collected by likes of Pandora and The Weather Channel can easily be collated and used to identify individuals.

Nintendo World: 31 3DS Titles To Be Shown Off, 14 To Be Playable

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:29 PM PST

The 3DS launches in Japan on February 26th, which will no doubt shut-down the country in a state of mass histaria. But early next month Nintendo will make the 3DS available to the general public for the very first time at the self-named Nintendo World. Unlike at the press- and industry-only E3 show where the 3DS was announced, every Joe and Jane from the street’s of Tokyo will be able to play with the 3D gaming marvel and Nintendo has a whole set of playable demos ready.

The playable demo list is slightly longer than the E3 list with 14 playable demos making the cut verses the eight that were at the LA Show back in June. Nintendo also revealed the entire list of 3DS games that will be displayed, which totals 31 games and apps in all.

Samsung Adds i-Function Lens Compatibility To NX10, Forming the NX11

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:01 PM PST

Samsung today announced an update to their NX10 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, just about a year after we first heard about it. The NX11 is actually not much of an improvement (which is not to say it’s bad); the addition of i-Function lenses and an adjustment of the grip seem to be the only new features.

Beyond that you have the same 3″ 640×480 AMOLED screen, 720p/30 video, and an APS-C sensor producing 14.6 megapixels. It’s got a hot shoe, a new lens priority mode, and all the usual accessories. I remember some disappointing early reports of the i-Function lenses, though, so make sure you try this out in person before making the commitment. The NX11 should be available in February for $649 with an 18-55mm i-Function lens.

Samsung also announced a new compact camera, the WB700, a sort of compact megazoom. It’s got a 18x optical zoom, puts out 1080p and 16 megapixels, and… there you have it. It’ll cost three hundred clams. That’s actually quite a nice-looking little camera.

Lastly, there are two new i-Function lenses for those of you interested in such things: a 20mm F/2.8 pancake and a 20-50mm F/3.5-5.6 zoom.

Gresso Launching iPad For The Stupidly Rich

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:00 PM PST

Here’s a version of the iPad you’re not going to see at the airport vending machines. Luxury manufacturer Gresso is producing an iPad made from African Blackwood and 18k gold.

It turns out that African Blackwood is considered to be the most valuable tree in the world, which will be used to make the case. The Apple logo will be made from 18k gold, completing this example of conspicuous consumption. The iPod Gresso will be released this coming New Year’s Eve, but there’s not official word on how much it’ll cost.

Gibson Forces Wowwee to Pull Paper Jamz Guitars

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 03:18 PM PST

One of my favorite toys of the season was the Paper Jamz guitar and amp. Sadly, Gibson didn’t think it was so great and sued the manufacturer, WowWee, for infringing on their image. See, the Paper Jamz may be made of paper, but they kind of look like the Gibson, so the guitar company sued them for trademark infringement, suggesting that WowWee claimed that the guitars “looked like” Gibsons. While this is untrue, Target and a number of other stores have pulled the toys.

According the the scuttlebutt, Gibson is hurting in terms of new products and we all know the last refuge of a flagging company is patent litigation.

You can read/watch our original review right here.

iPod Nano Kind Of Hacked

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:39 PM PST

It’s not much of a hack – JWhelton simply removed an app and looked at the underlying OS – but this is proof of concept stuff that shows that the iPod Nano is essentially a stripped-down iOS device with severe limitations.

Interestingly, the device also potentially supports TV-out, iCal, and passcode locks, although that good be vestigial code from the real iOS.

He’s releasing a tutorial this or next week if you want to try it yourself.

See How Japan Crash Tests Their Robots

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 12:26 PM PST

Not content to programming in the Three Rules, Japanese roboticists are now crash testing their creations using techniques learned from car tests. Take this video, for example: it shows a pair of legs being tested to see if they have enough strength to crush bone and sinew during the uprising.

In this video, a Subaru cleaning robot avoids a human – because the human was kind to it once, not because it is programmed to. The other humans it shredded.

AT&T Spreading the Public Wi-Fi Love To Times Square, Embarcadero District

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 12:02 PM PST

Just what we need: more Wi-Fi to foul up our genes and mutate our babies! AT&T is now blanketing Time Square and parts of San Francisco with public Wi-FI (N.B. “public” != free. You still have to pay or be an AT&T subscriber.) However, the best thing is that it will effect areas with the worst AT&T data coverage, which will severely improve your iPhone experience in those areas.

Huge deal? No, but at least you’ll be able to Facetime from Times Square while your family from Wisconsin ogles at the baked goods and sandwiches in the window of the Roxy’s Deli and then, inevitably, walks over to McDonalds because its the only place you all can agree on.

Dell’s Ultraslim Adamo Series, Now $200 Cheaper

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 11:30 AM PST

I don’t suppose this news will really rock anyone’s world, but if you’re in the market for an ultraslim laptop, this $200 price drop might be the factor that pushes the Dell up to the top of the heap. The Adamo (not the XPS, but the vanilla Adamo) laptop has decent specs except for the video card, and is a fairly slick-looking and compact machine.

Check out the specs here; even with the new starting price of $899, you’re still paying through the nose for the form factor, though.

Bamboo Bike Kit Lets You Build… Yes, A Bamboo Bike, How Did You Know

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 11:00 AM PST

We see bamboo here and there on CrunchGear (the Dodocase, laptops, bikes), but I’m usually suspicious of bamboo-type products, because they usually make specious claims of greenness. This kit seems useful, though, if only because it provides a semi-eco-friendly way to put together a new bike. Interestingly, it does not provide the bike parts or the bamboo. Hey, what the…

Actually, since the kit is an offshoot (so to speak) from a bamboo-bike building studio, it’s more of an enabling kit than an all-in-one thing. It’s got all the stuff you need to prepare and attach your bamboo to itself and the bike bits, and extensive instructions and videos on how to do it.

Whether the bike is any good depends almost wholly on your craftsmanship skills and the quality of the parts and bamboo you bring to the table, but I’d call that a good thing.

Olympus E-PL2 Appears In The Rumorsphere

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 10:58 AM PST

This is kind of exciting but also not: the Olympus E-PL2 appeared in the camera rumornet but it’s not a major upgrade – at least so far – from the E-PL1. Improved features include a new “PENPAL” Bluetooth module that connects to the hotshoe and a new filter called “Dramatic Tone.” Sadly, it has the same good sensor but the size and shape are slightly different.

One more pic after the jump.

The new model also has an improved screen and a “direct movie” button which doesn’t sound much different from the original E-PL1. We’re big supporters of the Micro 4/3 standard, which is what makes this pretty exciting – new models mean more uptake in the format.

Shock: Music Industry Tops DMCA Takedown Notices In 2010

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 10:30 AM PST

Man, they’re still fighting, aren’t they? ChillingEffects‘ stats, by way of TorrentFreak, reveal that the "international music industry," in the form of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, has sent the most DMCA takedowns notices in 2010, with some 1,272 notices sent in the year. In third place is some Brazilian hardware site, Clube do Hardware. In third place we have Twentieth Century Fox, the movie studio that brought us hits like Knight and Day, Predators, Machete, and Wall Street: The Kid From Even Stevens Edition. Oh, and Avatar.

What does all of this mean? Eh, not a whole lot. We learn that the music industry, hilariously, still hasn’t quit going after people who share pop-trash nonsense. (There was a big operation a few days ago targeting music sites who are accused of engaging in "willful copyright infringement," but it’s a whole lot more complicated than that, particularly with respect to hip-hop marketing and promotion.) But beyond that, there isn’t much to digest here.

What’s perhaps a little surprising is the lack of movie studios in the upper tiers of the list. Twentieth Century Fox is the only non-pornographic film studio in the top 20.

The RIAA itself is in 7th place, issuing "only" 203 takedown notices.

What to watch: I’m going to guess that Amazon sold and boatload of Kindles this year, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see an increase in e-book piracy in 2011. Lord knows there’s already 8 million sites dedicated to sharing PDFs and EPUBs.

Would Buying Leon’s Resident Evil 4 Jacket Make You A Cosplayer?

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 09:30 AM PST

How many of you played Resident Evil 4 and thought to yourself, "Man, Leon has a really nice jacket"? I certainly did. Like, I really did: I walked around stupid New York trying to find a jacket that even resembled his jacket. No luck. If only Capcom had thought of this sooner, then.

Yes, it’s an exactly recreation (replica?) of Leon’s bomber jacket from Resident Evil 4. There’s the small problem of it only being officially available in Japan, but there are ways around that.

It’ll run you around $315, plus whatever deal you cut with the person/agency to help you snag one.

My question is, is this considered cosplay? I just think it’s a nice-looking jacket in the same way that I think Roberto Mancini wears nice-looking jackets.
