Google Chrome OS netbook keyboard revealed?

While we are still waiting for Tuesday to arrive there is another bit of Chrome OS netbook information available—an image of the keyboard. It looks like Engadget has gotten the image from a tipster, and while it could potentially be a keyboard for lots of computers—it does have some “Google-like” features such as a search key on the keyboard. Of course, most will realize that search key is in place of the usual caps lock key. With that, here is to hoping that the event on Tuesday really is to announce the Google branded Chrome OS netbook.

Swype "beta" for Android gets updated

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Swype

Those sporting the “beta” edition of the Swype virtual keyboard on Android may want to check this out—there is an update available. The crew over at Swype have announced that the 5th release of the Swype Beta for Android is now available. Anyway, according to the details the following changes and/or additions were made;

  • We’ve resolved an accuracy issue that was introduced in the last beta update.
  • Swype BETA for Android now supports Double-Tap-to-Edit! Swype choose a wrong word? Just tap the word twice to bring up the word choice window, pick the correct word, and the cursor will return to wherever it was before.
  • Swype BETA for Android now includes a Voice-to-Text button (available for QWERTY layouts ONLY)! You MUST have Google Voice Search pre-integrated in your ROM for this feature to work.

In addition, it was also noted that users should start seeing less of that “pesky” Hidden Word pop-up, names from the address book will no longer “muscle out” other words and a self-updating installer has been added.

With that, if you are running the Swype Beta for Android and want to get updated to the 5th release you will need to grab your Android smartphone and point your browser to http://beta.swype.com/android/get.

Angry Birds Seasons coming soon to webOS

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Software / Applications

Angry Birds Season on WebOS

When it comes to high-profile apps, WebOS is usually left out in the cold. That might not be a bad thing this time around. WebOS users don’t have to worry about their friends with Android or iOS devices showing off their newest version of Angry Birds. Soon WebOS will be able to play Angry Birds Seasons.

Details are scarce on the release of the app, all we know is that Rovio sent out a tweet that linked to the above image of Angry Birds Season running on a Palm Pre Plus. The tweet also said “almost there…” So, obviously the app will be out on WebOS soon.

Like all other versions of Angry Birds Seasons, the WebOS version will update free periodically to fit the current season. The Rovio Twitter account also noted that the developers “wouldn’t forget out webOS fans, just takes some time sometimes.”

Angry Birds for Android expected to generate $1million per month in revenue

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Gaming, Mobile, Portable

At this point it almost seems harder to not know what Angry Birds is.  After all, they have been talked about and talked about and then talked about some more. And despite some people complaining that a paid and non-ad-supported version of Angry Birds is not available for Android—that strategy seems to be working and working well for the makers, Rovio Mobile. According to some stats that were given, Angry Birds for Android has been downloaded more than 5 million times since the October launch and that they are projecting earnings to reach over 1 million per month by the end of the year. Not bad for a free game. Though personally I would still much rather pay a few bucks up front and not have to look at ads.

Samsung sold 1 million Galaxy Tabs in two months

Section: Communications, Mobile, Gadgets / Other

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Samsung’s 7-inch tablet, the Galaxy Tab is selling faster than even Samsung predicted. In just two months since it’s launch, the Android tablets has managed to sell over 1 million units despite it’s high price and two-year contracts.

When the device first launched, Samsung planned to sell just about 1 million Tabs before the year was done. With the news that it has already sold that number of units, the company has raised its expectations to 1.5 million units before the end of the year. Those 1.5 million units will all be on 3G versions, as the WiFi version of the Galaxy Tab is nowhere to be found.

Selling 1 million units so quickly is actually a bit surprising considering that the OS wasn’t built specifically for tablets. There must be a few reasons why the Tab is selling beter than expected. The size and the fact that it’s not made by Apple might be the two biggest reasons.

Boxee announces upcoming Boxee Box User Interface changes

Section: Video, Content, HDTV, Video Providers

Those who have already purchased, or those like myself who have remained a hold-out in hopes may be happy to hear the latest news from Boxee in regards to the Boxee Box—user interface changes are coming. Granted, this is not the Netflix and Hulu Plus support that I am waiting for, but these changes sound like they will certainly help things out a bit in terms of navigation and general use.

The details are coming by way of the Boxee Forums and include;

  • We are adding a screen in the initial login that will ask the user how he is going to use Boxee, for local file playback or Internet streaming. The selection will set the default behavior of clicking on Movies, Shows and Apps. These settings can later be changed by going to Settings>General>Menu
  • We have made a couple of changes to the generic browse screens to make it easier to sort through large collections. There is now a Sort button that lets you make changes to sorting order without launching the Menu.
  • There is now an option to navigate quickly by A-Z. You will see an alphabet bar on the right, so you can quickly jump to ‘W’ in case you want watch “Wife Swap” or other quality programming.. ;)
  • We added two new filter options for local files. The ability to filter by Genre and back by popular demand is the ability mark items as Watched or Unwatched and filter just the files you have not watched.
  • For people who wanted a more frequent scanning of their libraries we have introduced an hourly scan option. We also added a Scan button to the browse screen, so you can manually trigger a scan of your video folders without needing to go to Settings.

With that, it looks like theses changes are going to roll out to a test group first and then assuming all goes according to plan, those who are not in the early access group will begin to see them “some time next week.” Plus, this update will also take care of a few bugs. And really, who can complain about killing some bugs.
