Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile If you’ve been looking for a deal on the HP Veer it looks like Amazon has you covered, as long as you want the white version of the tiny smartphone. The black HP Veer is still listed as $49.99 on Amazon, while the white version of the phone will run you $49.98 less. Right now Amazon is listing the latest WebOS smartphone for just one penny, that’s $0.01. Of course the price only applies if you’re willing to sign the two-year contract for the phone. The phone will even come with free shipping the the price is really negligible. At that price, the only factor is whether you like the phone or not. If you can like the idea of having a tiny smartphone, this is the deal you’ve been waiting for. If not, just wait around for the Pre 3 if you wants a WebOS phone. This particular document shows the display setup for the TouchPad at Walmart. Along with the document is a price tag listing the TouchPad for $599. The document in question comes from a Kentucky Walmart, and shows that the Touchpad is getting a special 45-inch by 5-inch display at the store. The bottom of said document says the display should be going up the week of June 6, so sometime in the next few days, if it’s not already up. The TouchPad is said to go on sale on “a later date.” Given that the display is there, that date is probably close. We’re just five days aways from the rumored June 12 release, which seems doubtful by now. The price for the display would seem to be a WiFi model of the TouchPad, but it’s no entirely clear. If that is the price for the WiFi version, let’s hope its for the 32GB model. If it is the 3G/4G model of the TouchPad, that’s great, beating Apple by $30 is a pretty good way to enter the market. Some parts of the iCloud service went online yesterday, meaning that MobileMe would essentially die. Well, not exactly. MobileMe still lives for another year for those who already paid. Last night Apple sent out an email to MobileMe subscribers that their subscriptions had been renewed until June 30, 2012 for free. So, there will be no downtime for those of us with @me.com email addresses which will now be included in iCloud. It also means that you get a full year of iDisk support which won’t be included in iCloud. The free service for existing users isn’t great news for everyone. Apple will no longer sell the MobileMe service to anyone. If you were hoping to beat the crowds and claim your @me.com email by paying for it, you’re out of luck. Don’t worry, you’re not really missing much with the service. Still, the options to buy the service is taken away so nobody else will be able to buy their 20GB of iDisk storage and MobileMe galleries. Perhaps these services will come back later, but they’re gone for now. Here’s what appears to be a stylish, multifunction watch with a smartphone OS and SDK to allow it to be even more. This thing runs Android and is compatible with smartphones including Apple’s iPhone. After pairing with your smartphone, the i’m Watch becomes a mobile assistant to your phone. Without touching your phone, you can see who called, check email, notifications, initiate calls (even has speaker phone) and more. It’s an impressive list made possible with the Android OS the thing is running. Watch aficionado John Biggs of CrunchGear says the watch is either garbage or ridiculous frippery. I disagree. I think this could be an interesting option. Have you ever missed calls when your phone was set to vibrate? I sure have. Having a watch on your wrist that vibrates would all but solve that issue for me. Adding in a touch screen and the potential to work with my other apps is just icing on the cake. (Waiting to hear back if in fact, the I’m Watch does vibrate - it must, right?) Why shouldn’t everything you own be smart? Google’s free Android OS seems like a smart way to do this. We’ve requested a review and we’ll let you know if we get selected. Coming this fall at $365 for what appears to be plastic color version and $879 in titanium (at today’s conversion rates). Previous reports of only Sony-supplied cameras were spurred by statement from Sony front man Sir Howard Stringer. These statements appear to have been incorrect or misunderstood as DigiTimes reports Sony will have only 10% of the camera volume while longtime partner OmniVision will have the lions share. About 90% of the CIS orders for Apple’s new iPhone will be supplied by OmniVision, while Sony takes up the remainder, the sources said. The upcoming device will feature a built-in 8-megapixel camera, the sources added. OmniVision looks to have camera’s that are 1080p capable that are in the 8MP range, proving the fodder for speculation that Apple may select these trinkets for inclusion in the next iPhone or iPhone 5 (whichever comes first). iPhone 4’s camera is already the second most popular device used on sites like flicr, a jump in specs to keep up with the plethora of Google offerings sounds just about right. From almost all of the stock Apple apps to, what we’re hearing, is two lines of code inserted into an app will Twitter-fy just about any 3rd party app. Twitter just made a huge deal with Apple. We’ve seen Facebook use similar tactics all over the web. “Sign in with Facebook Connect” is ubiquitous. Now, Apple is giving Twitter the chance to reach even higher levels. But why did Apple pick Twitter? We’ve heard time and again that Google and Facebook have a rough relationship. Google is smarting after failed takeover attempts, failed social network creation attempts and the best they seem to be able to manage is “+1” when users really mean “like”. So, it’s a given that Google will not run into the arms of Facebook any time soon. You know who loves Facebook? Microsoft. As an investor, Microsoft has aligned with Facebook. This may have forced Apple’s hand to jump to Twitter. the biggest question that remains is this, “how long will it be before your Mom follows you on Twitter?” Read: [readwriteweb] image credit: Chaaps Full Story » | Written by JG Mason for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile The device that was the hit of CES this year, the Motorola Atrix, has received a price discount at AT&T knocking $100 off. The Atrix is a great device by itself but can also be used with a laptop dock to create an experience bigger than the just the device. Supply may be tight, so if you’ve been waiting for this, now’s the time to jump. But you probably have not been waiting for this. Gadgetell’s Robert Nelson found the Atrix for just $49 last month over at Amazon. A quick trip there this morning found the phone at $99.99. Scheduled for release sometime this Fall, iOS 5 will bring in around 200 new features to our iPhone 4 and 3GS, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod Touch. Major new features of iOS 5 include - notification center, iMessage, Newsstand, PC Free and more. First things first iOS 5 will work seamlessly with the new iCloud. So that when you enter your Apple ID and Password, iCloud will integrate with your apps-automatically and wirelessly keeping all your mail, contacts, calendars, photos, apps, books, music and more, up-to-date across all your devices. That can be done even without the need to connect to your computer. With that said, briefly, here are what the key features which we should expect from iOS 5: - A new Notification Center that will provide you with an innovative way of easily accessing all notifications from text messages, missed calls, calendar alerts, app alerts and more. This will be situated at the top of your device’s screen. Swipe to pull down the notifications and tap to bring you to the appropriate app. This notification will also appear on the lock screen. If you’re an Android user, it’s similar to how the notifications work on your Android devices.
- Easy-to-organize Newsstand bookshelf which will display the covers of all your newspaper and magazine subscriptions in one place. There will also be a new section in the App Store featuring subscription titles that will let you quickly find the most popular newspapers and magazines. If you’re subscribed to any of these newspapers or magazine, the new issues will appear in the Newsstand and will be updated automatically in the background.
- The Safari mobile browser will also be improved with a new feature called Safari Reader. This will get all the clutter out of the way and will set the right font size on a web page. It will also allow you to scroll and read through a story. Another feature is the Reading List which will let you save articles for reading later. And Tabbed browsing will make it easier to flip between multiple web pages on your iPad.
- One highly anticipated feature is the built-in Twitter integration which will allow you to sign in once and then tweet directly from all your Twitter-enabled apps such as Photos, Safari, YouTube, Maps, and Camera using a single tap.
- The new iMessage will be built right into your device’s Messages app and will let you to easily send text messages, photos, videos or contact information to a person or group over Wi-Fi or 3G. iMessages will be automatically pushed to all your iOS 5 devices. This new feature is obviously similar to BlackBerry’s BBM.
- iOS 5 will also bring a new Reminders app which will help you manage your tasks, create and group related tasks together and set time or location-based reminder alerts.
Aside from those new features, iOS 5 will also bring in new features for Camera and Photo Apps specifically the volume-up button for quickly snapping a photo as well as in-app photo editing via the Photo app. Other features include setting up of new iOS device right out of the box, software update delivery over the air, Wi-Fi sync, Game Center enhancements, mail enhancements, and Airplay Mirroring. As mentioned iOS 5 will be ready sometime this Fall. But if you’re an Apple Developer, you can grab the beta software and SDK right now from the Apple Development Center. In iOS 5 Apple seems to have finally fixed them, however. Gone are the annoying popups and badges that don’t tell you anything. Now you get simple, unobtrusive alerts anywhere in the OS, and on the lockscreen. In iOS 5 instead of the annoying popup notifications that distract you from what you’re doing, you now get a small bar at the top of the screen. That bar looks very similar to MobileNotifier that’s been available to Jailbreakers for some time now. It will show you an icon of the app that’s giving the notification and a brief preview of the message. You can choose to either ignore the message or tap it to act upon it. If you ignore the message you can access it via the new Notification Center. To access Notification Center you can either swipe down from the top of the screen just like Android, or you can open the app icon. The Notication Center will store all of your notifications from all your apps, and even provide quick access to Stocks and Weather should you want them to show up there. If it sounds like something you’ve seen in Android, you’re not alone, but this being Apple it’ll hopefully be an even better experience. Even if it isn’t, Notification Center is certainly a huge step up for iOS. Read [Apple] Full Story » | Written by Shawn Ingram for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » More Recent Articles |
