Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones The upcoming HTC EVO 3D is causing a lot of buzz as it is going to launch with an exciting feature that could prove to be revolutionary for the wireless industry. If its 3D, glasses-less, display meets success when it launches, it could open up a whole new market for smartphone manufacturers. Today, Sprint took the liberty to announce what special apps and features the HTC EVO 3D will contain when it launches sometime during the summer. To begin with, the blockbuster hit, The Green Hornet 3D, will be preloaded onto the device for a limited time. In addition, HTC will bundle the device with a special app called HTC Watch, and it is designed to allow users to access 2D and 3D content through an online store. In case the HTC Watch app isn’t your cup of tea, it will also come preloaded with the Blockbuster On Demand app that will allow for rentals and purchases of 3D content. The utility of a 3D display doesn’t stop with movies, as Sprint plans to offer the Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem 3D demo version of the game on the EVO 3D. In addition, more 2D and 3D game titles can be purchased and installed using the Gameloft Storefront app. Most titles will be available for purchase for $4.99. The HTC EVO 3D features a 4.3 inch qHD display, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 5MP rear facing camera, 1.3MP front facing camera, and it runs Android 2.3. The expected pricing for the new Sprint Android smartphone is $199 on a two year contract. As of now, we’re still waiting on official pricing and release information from Sprint. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are now all universal apps that will work on any iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and 3rd or 4th generation iPod touch. Now you can get the same iWork apps on all your iOS devices without having to pay for them again. The iPhone and iPod touch versions of the apps will work the same, just with a smaller screen. The work around that, they each have Smart Zoom, which basically means the app will automatically zoom into where you’re typing so you don’t have to. Otherwise, the apps are essentially the same, they’re just running on smaller screens. The new versions of the iWork apps also add a few new features. First, you’re finally able to sort documents into folders. I’ve never had more than a few documents in the iWork apps on my iPad, but this will surely help someone that does a lot of work in iWork on iOS. Assuming that person exists, of course. Each app will cost you $9.99, which is still a bit cheap, but it’s always nice to have an app that can read files for work or school. There must be others, but Apple’s apps are pretty good, especially now if you have multiple iOS devices. T-Mobile announcing that it has started offering two new monthly 4G plans on May 22 but officially announcing them it only now? Today happens to be the 31st of May in case the T-Mobile folks were not aware of their calendar. But anyway, the two new Monthly4G plans being offered start at $50 per month, that goes with no annual contract. And for that price you’ll enjoy unlimited Talk, unlimited Text and unlimited web service with the first 100MB, on your smartphone, be it an Android phone, BlackBerry or Windows Phone. That web service is of course at 4G speeds. You can also opt to get the $70 monthly plan that comes with unlimited talk, unlimited text and unlimited web with the first 5GB of data at 4G speeds. Incidentally, the 4G speeds for web service is good only until you’ve consumed the data allowance. From thereon, web surfing speed will be slowed down for the remainder of the month. Even though Samsung plans to ultimately launch the Galaxy Player sometime soon, I feel like it should have already happened…a while ago. In any event, according to the Best Buy mobile app, the Samsung Galaxy Player is going to retail for $269.99. It comes with 8GB of on board memory, a microSD slot for memory expansion, a 3MP rear facing camera, and a VGA front facing camera. It is essentially a Galaxy S smartphone without a 3G radio and voice support. We still have no word on exact pricing or availability, but I’m certain it will be around the $269 price point and should hopefully be available by late spring early summer. However, according to some reports, several users of the Motorola Droid Pro have already begun receiving the Android 2.3 update, as you can see from the image above. We are not sure, at this time, whether Motorola accidentally began to roll out the update to Droid Pro owners, or if Motorola actually planned to begin the update today and simply did not let the public know. Turns out there’ll be a lot of talk about software and the cloud, as we expected. To make it even better, it will all be discussed by Steve Jobs himself. The only previously announced piece of software that will be discussed in the keynote is Mac OS X Lion. The next version of OS X is rumored to possibly be almost ready for release, so a release date wouldn’t be too surprising. It’d actually be more surprising if there wasn’t one. Perhaps His Jobness will show off some of the new features we’ve been hearing about like Reading List and the slightly changed UI. Joining Lion will be iOS 5, the next bog software update for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. We don’t know too much about the new iOS, but there have been rumors of widgets and improved notifications. Apple has to do something now that Windows Phone Mango is looming and Google is preparing to address some of the nagging issues in Android (updates and fragmentation between tablets and smartphones being two of the biggest). There won’t be a new iPhone, and iOS 5 is probably a few months away, but it’ll be interesting to see how Apple responds to having very real competition. A few somewhat significant overhauls would be very nice, and potentially needed to maintain dominance. The final piece Jobs will discuss is the new iCloud service. It will presumably be replacing MobileMe as Apple’s cloud service. We’ve heard rumors of a music locker or streaming service with actual label deals. It would also make sense for Apple to use it as a simple way to wirelessly sync files between devices a la Dropbox. Thy already exists with iDisk, but it could be made a lot more intuitive, and a lot faster. We don’t know exactly what to expect, but it should be better than MobileMe, which currently isn’t worth the $100 a year subscription. I’m sure many Xperia X10 owners wished their device had launched originally with at least Android 2.1, but hey, what can you do? Take, Instagram and 100 Cameras in 1 for example. If you don’t have an iPhone or 4th generation iPod Touch, these apps can become restrictive. You can still utilize these apps with an older iPod model, but you have to find a way to import photos onto your older iPod Touch to get the most out of them. It’s a shame there aren’t Android versions for either of these apps yet, but you can make the importing process faster by using the cloud. My dilemma was simple. I wanted to find a way to use Instagram as one of my primary ways of sharing edited photos. The effects Instagram offers are very cool to look at, but I only had a third-generation iPod Touch. I couldn’t take photos with my iPod, and the fastest way for me to put recently taken photos on the iPod was to email the photos to myself from my Android phone. That whole ordeal was starting to get tedious, so I turned to the cloud for assistance. I currently have an account with SugarSync, a cloud storage service. SugarSync also has an Android application. In its latest Android update, SugarSync allowed photos to be automatically uploaded to the cloud right after they’re taken. Sugarsync also has an iOS application. Whenever my photos are beamed to the cloud, I open up the SugarSync application on my iPod Touch, find the photos, and download them to the camera roll. From there, I’m free to use photo editing iOS applications with ease. SugarSync is probably not the only cloud storage application for Android and iOS, but it’s the only one I know of with an automatic photo uploading option. This method works perfectly for me, but you may have your own methods as well. This is just another way on how the cloud can make content sharing easier, while solving minor problems at the same time. This is a pretty big update for the app because it allows photos to be uploaded to Instagram directly from the app. You can also take the photos that have been edited in Instagram (if they’re saved on your phone) and add even more layers of effects to them. Other changes in this update include speed improvements, bug fixes and authorization changes that were recently made mandatory by Twitter. In case you haven’t heard of it, 100 Cameras in 1 is a photo editing application. It takes the otherwise plain photos you’ve taken with your phone and turns them into digital pieces of art. There are 100 different effects you can experiment with. You can also keep adding effects to a single photo until you’re satisfied with what you have. This app is great if you’re really into sharing photographs across social networks. The effects can dramatically alter original pictures. An official Twitter photo sharing service will go a long way in helping Twitter gain even more control over its product. This move can also discourage other companies from developing their own photo services. Whenever you upload a photo to Twitter, there’s a good chance you use a service such as Twitpic, TweetPhoto or yfrog. If Twitter creates a way for its users to upload photos, chances are it will become the default photo option for official Twitter applications. Other than confirmation from sources that such a service exists, TechCrunch wasn’t able to gather any more information on Twitter’s latest move. We can definitely see something like this happening after considering Twitter’s recent stance on third-party Twitter applications and permissions. Twitter told developers to stop making new Twitter applications because it claims users could become confused about Twitter’s core experience. Twitter also recently required users to go through a permissions page if they want to allow a third-party web application to access their account. Let’s also not forget the $40 million Twitter just spent on TweetDeck. At this point, it looks like if Twitter can’t buy the competition, they’ll just run it out of town.
