Section: Business News, Communications, Smartphones, Gaming, Mobile The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (aka PlayStation Phone) is arguably the best smartphone for gamers. Not only is it a phone with a full gamepad, it also has years of trustworthy PlayStation controller button placement backing it up. The Xperia Play hasn’t made a very big splash, but it is a testament to how Sony is looking to capitalize on always-connected mobile gaming through its PlayStation brand. If the Xperia Play is to remain relevant, it needs software backing it up. Making Minecraft exclusive to the Xperia Play (for a limited time) is great for increasing the Xperia Play’s recognition. Moving forward, Sony will have over 20 more games for the Xperia Play. Some will be exclusive titles and will not. Among the new games are Lumines, Battlefield Bad Company 2 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Shadow Vanguard. The rest of the titles are listed below. Exclusive Xperia Play Games - Minecraft

Today we have yet another piece of information that points to a release date sometime in the near future. HP has just started taking app submissions for WebOS 3.0. Developers were given a message via the WebOS Developer Center saying "we encourage you to get your app in as soon as you can to have the best chance of it being available on the launch date." Given that the app approval process for WebOS typically doesn’t take too long, this could mean that the TouchPad is almost ready for release. Or, it could just mean that HP wants to take it’s time to make sure everything about the TouchPad is perfect, even including the third-party apps. The other tidbit of information is that HP has started implementing in-app purchasing for WebOS 3.0 apps. Developers can start making items to be sold in apps today. Soon after, the code for enabling in-app purchases will be put into the SDK. Following that, users will be able to submit in-app items for review. With that WebOS can offer much of the same features as iOS and Android. Now all we need is apps that are as good as or better than the ones found on the other two platforms. Unsurprisingly, a large percentage of users are still using older versions of Android, while a much smaller percentage is using Honeycomb. According to the latest stats, Android 2.2 Froyo is clearly the most popular version of the OS, with 64.6 percent of all users. Next popular is Android 2.1 with 21.2 percent of the total Android user base. That’s right, 21.2 percent of all Android users are a full two versions behind. More people are using Android 2.1 Eclair than Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Gingerbread is running on a total of 9.2 percent of devices (1.1 percent for 2.3 and 8.1 percent for 2.3.3). Sure, it’s better than the 1.9 percent of users on Android 1.5 and the 2.5 percent on Android 1.6, but it still could be a lot better. Hopefully Google’s commitment to updating phones for 18 months will put more people just one away from the newest release if not on the newest release. The stats also show just how few people have adopted Android tablets. Just 0.3 percent of all Android users are using Android 3.0, while another 0.3 percent is using Android 3.1. So, just 0.6 percent of all Android devices are Honeycomb tablets. That’s not very promising for Google. Sure, that number could increase, but the current set of tablets don’t seem to be the devices to do that. It’s going to be released on June 17 at all US Best Buy stores. But before that, Samsung has decided to make the tablet available earlier from the Best Buy store located in Union Square, New York. According to the official press release issued by Samsung, there will be a limited supply of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1’s at the Union Square location on June 8. Official pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be $599 for the 32GB version and $499 for the 16GB version. Both will be running on Android 3.1, the latest tablet-specific Android OS otherwise known as Honeycomb. Hopefully by now you already know what you’ll get for that price. If not, allow me to highlight the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was highly praised by those who attended the Google I/O event recently. What I’m not sure of is whether the praises that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 received actually mean that the tablet is really good and not because of the fact that the tablets were given away for free. What we don’t know is how many were offered through Gilt.com. Invitations to the sale were sent to current Chromebook users from Google’s pilot CR-48 program. The sale occurred two weeks before the public launch of the Samsung Chromebook. Is Google testing the water to see what demand exists or is it something different. Next week will be all Apple news. There’s little Google can throw out that won’t be a footnote then, perhaps even about Android. Google may have seized this opportunity to score some media points with this sale by limiting how many Chromebooks were available so sell-out stories could take form. What’s your take? The Honeycomb tablet will go up for pre-order on June 8, and will be released sometime this summer. If you want to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, be prepared to pay quite a bit. For the base 16GB model Verizon will charge you $529.99 with a two-year contract. The 32GB version will cost $629.99 also on a two-year contract. Not sure why you’d want to spend that much for an Android tablet with a monthly fee, but not you have the option. In case you forgot, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a 10.1-inch screen with a 1280x800 resolution, and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core CPU. There’s also a front-facing 2MP camera and a 3MP rear-facing camera. It will likely be running Android 3.1 by the time it launches. So, it’s just like most other Honeycomb tablets, except this one says Samsung on it. No matter what name you put on it, no Android tablet is worth $529.99 plus a two-year contract. Well, be afraid no longer. YouTube has just added the option to license content under Creative Commons, making it easier for everyone to remix videos without being punished. Creative Commons actually has a variety of licenses available, but YouTube users can use only one. That license requires attribution for any content used, and the video using Creative Commons material cannot be used for commercial purposes. YouTube has partnered new organizations C-SPAN and Al Jazeera to get 10,000 videos under CC license to start off. Other videos available with the license also apparently include a cat riding a roomba, a waving flag or 25 seconds of the Golden Gate Bridge. To use the CC licensed content, simply go to the YouTube Video Editor. The available video will be in it’s own separate tab like you see above. Then you can mash it up until you’ve happy with the final result. The links to the original content will automatically be linked in your video description, making the process very easy for everyone. It would have been nice if YouTube offered more types of Creative Commons licenses, but limiting it to only one is probably better for users who might not be too familiar with the licenses. It’s still a lot better than having everything copyrighted and users fearing takedown notices for using the content in their own videos. Tentatively called the Huawei MediaPad, the company says that this is going to be their smartest, smallest, and lightest tablet to date. And they’ve also attached 2 images of the said MediaPad tablet which pretty much highlights the fact that this tablet is really going to be thin. Looking closely at the picture, it is highly probably that the MediaPad will also have a front-facing camera which is pretty standard with the tablets of today. The tablet also looks like a smaller version of the iPad. The preview focused largely on tablets, with a new UI that seems designed with tablets as the main focal point. What Microsoft has deemed to show off is Windows 8 with a touch layer that greatly resembles Windows Phone 7. The home screen of the OS is simply a collection of tiles instead of the icons, taskbar , and gadgets you’d normally expect from Windows. The tiles work just like they do on Windows Phone, some serve as simple icons to apps while others update themselves to show important information like the weather right on the tile itself. Apps launch into full screen, though the screen can be split between two apps, something we haven’t yet seen on tablets. Splitting the screen between two apps only seems asymmetrical at the moment, but for some apps having a small sliver might be all you need. The apps you’ll be using will be written in Javascript and CSS according to the Windows Team, though those aren’t be the only languages used. There are still legacy apps like the Microsoft Office Suite that will run in the classic desktop experience, making the tile interface seem like even more of just a layer over the OS. Those legacy apps will be touch-friendly, or as touch-friendly as is possible in the current Windows environment. Presumably they will be able to use the same keyboard, which looks to be an enlarged version of the Windows Phone keyboard. There’s even an option there to split the keys down the middle and push them to the side making touch typing actually usable on a tablet larger than 7-inches. The changes do look interesting, but there are many questions to be answered. Questions like: why would anyone want to use legacy Windows apps on a tablet? Or, will you be able to use the same sort of apps in both environments? This new interface will be available on all form factors. That could cause issues with apps that work better with or without a touchscreen. There’s still time to answer these questions, but some of the basic design choices seem a bit troubling. Whether you jumped on WP7 at launch last year or if you’ve recently become a believer, every phone will be on the same playing field as far as the operating system goes. Now may be a good time to take the plunge into Microsoft’s mobile ecosystem because Amazon Wireless is practically giving the phones away. There is a special promotion going on right now at Amazon Wireless for WP7 smartphones. Amazon is giving away a $25 Amazon gift card to anyone who purchases a WP7 smartphone by June 30. The codes will be made available via email within five days of buying a phone. Amazon Wireless has at least one WP7 smartphone for the four major U.S. carriers. That’s not even the best news. Amazon Wireless is also selling some of the phones such as the Samsung Focus, HTC Arrive, HTC Surround and the LG Quantum for a penny. The most expensive phone is the HTC Trophy for $99.99. You’ll need to sign up for a new line of service to be guaranteed the full discount. There are a few phones that won’t give up the full discount with existing contract extensions. Still, these phones are dirt cheap for what they are. Thanks Doug. Well, the Atrix is available for free if you are willing to make a 24 month commitment on a monthly tariff that is priced at £35.75 or higher. And for reference, that plan includes 900 minutes and 500 text messages. Otherwise, there is a wide variety of other plans available with some starting as allow as £10.21 per month for 100 minutes and 100 text messages. Granted, that plan comes with a much higher upfront cost—the Atrix would be £350. That said, those interested can hit the link below and head on over to check out all the available options. Unwired View even got some juicy specs about this still unknown Android smartphone. According to them, the phone features a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, GPS, camera, full QWERTY keyboard and GSM/WCDMA connectivity. Speaking of connectivity, the said phone also happens to support only 850 / 1900 UMTS which is the band for AT&T handsets. So, that rules out the possibility that said phone is actually a new Sidekick phone because the last time AT&T released a Sharp feature phone was way back in 2010. But in reality, it’s still a real smartphone that is heading towards American shores. For now enjoy the leaked photos and make some wild guesses on what this new smartphone could be.
