| | Section: Communications, Smartphones Last year at Mobile World Congress Microsoft debuted Windows Phone 7, this year it announced what to expect from the OS in the coming year. The first update is one that’s bee promised for a little while, Others, meanwhile are a bit surprising. First, coming up next month is copy and paste. Microsoft talked about bringing the feature to WP7 at CES, and now it’s giving a window of early March for the feature. The same update will bring about improvements to the software so apps don’t take as long to launch. March will also see CDMA support for WP7, so the platform will finally come to Sprint and Verizon. Later in the year is when the platform gets more interesting. Microsoft will add Twitter to the People tile sometime in 2011. With that the same tile will be able to view both Facebook and Twitter without having to get the dedicated apps. It might not replace the dedicated apps, but it’s great for quick glances. Later in the year Microsfot will also bring the promised multitasking to Windows Phone 7. It might be a bit late, but it’s better than not having it at all. Later in the year we’ll also see an improved browser based on IE9 hit the platform. It might not be the best browser out there, but it’ll at least handle HTML5 better than the current WP7 browser. Today Boxee announced that it is finally able to get Netflix working well on the Boxee Box. Right now Boxee Box owners can update their box to the newest version (1.0.4.17443) to get access to Netflix. The update should happen automatically sometime in the next 24 hours, or it can be done manually. Now you can finally use your Netflix streaming on another set-top box. It’s available to everyone who can get Netflix in both the US and Canada. The user interface is a version of the new UI we’ve been seeing on other device lately, which should be easy enough to navigate with the Boxee Box remote. Now we only have to wait for the Boxee Box remote with the dedicated Netflix button. While we have heard some rumors of the Droid X2, we have not seen any possible images. However, The Mobi Zone blog received several images of the Droid X2 and published a list of specs they believe to be present in the Droid X2. Aesthetically speaking, the Droid X2 is said to be very similar to the original Droid X, but offers more powerful specs, but isn’t compatible with Verizon’s LTE network. Starting with the processor and RAM, the Droid X2 features NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor and sports 1GB of RAM. All this raw speed would work great on Verizon’s 4G network, but alas, a 4G radio is not included. No word on exact screen size, but the screen is expected to be qHD with a resolution of 540 x 960. It features the same 8MP rear facing camera, but Verizon declined to include a front facing camera on the device, which is another disappointment. The Motorola Droid X2 will launch with Android 2.2, but could receive Gingerbread shortly after launch. It loses the dedicated camera button, but gains an FM radio. According to the blog, it should launch sometime in Q2 of 2011. For more pictures of the Droid X2, visit The Mobi Zone below. Their sources paint the picture of a company looking to move further down the mass adoption pyramid to find yet more users. Apple competitors have one very powerful weapon that Apple lacks: multiple form factors. Apple’s relied on one form factor for the past 4 years that was available in black and sometimes (ha) white. Would be customers won’t find a keyboard to swoon BlackBerry users, nor pretty colors to catch someone’s attention. Users won’t find R2-D2 special editions, Valentine red versions or similar sex’d up variations. The WSJ info says one of the devices, code named N97 (which was Nokia’s mini smartphone) was, “significantly lighter than the iPhone 4 and had an edge-to-edge screen that could be manipulated by touch, as well as a virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation.” There’s nothing in the info to indicate we’ll be seeing hardware QWERTY any time soon. However, if we take a wide view of smartphones, you’ll find hardware keyboard equipped handsets outnumber touchscreen-only versions. This holds true at Verizon and AT&T, the major two carriers in the USA. Touchscreen-only phones are a distant second. If only quick messaging style devices are viewed, the margin grows wider with hardware keyboard devices leading the charge. Could Apple retreat from their touch-is-best stance? Perhaps. With a smaller screen (or at least smaller form factor) a thinner device could become quickly crowded. Apple could justify the smaller size necessitated a hardware solution. We suspect Apple would call the keyboard, “magical” as well. If you consider that we are training youth on quick messaging devices and normal cell phones, where fast keyboarding is the name of the texting game, there’s a natural progression for this group of buyers to gravitate to devices that have buttons to push. That means they are funneled to Android, webOS, Windows Phone or even Symbian. iOS is locked out of the party by design. As a guy who yesterday used his nose to “swipe to answer” on a chair-lift, I can tell you buttons have their place. Apple does nothing well if not study the market carefully. Mobile World Congress 2011 is starting to heat up with no less than Sony Ericsson sparking things a bit. Aside from the two new Android smartphones, Sony Ericsson is also officially launching what others consider as game-changing smartphone - the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Of course, as you all know, this Android smartphone not only boasts of smartphone functionality but a total gaming experience for you as well. From the smartphone side, the Xperia Play features a 5MP camera with all the works, 4-inch capacitive multi-touch screen, Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, 400MB on-board memory, 1GHz Scorpion ARMv7, 8GB microSD card expandable up to 32GB, 3.5mm audio jack, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi hotspot capability and of course access to hundreds of Android apps available from the Android Market. But of course, those are not only the goodies that you should expect from the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. As mentioned, this Android smartphone is also a fully-capable portable gaming machine, well short of being a Sony PSP. As such, hidden at the back of the device is a slide-out gaming control consisting of a digital D pad, two analog touch pages, two shoulder buttons and the familiar four Playstation icons - cross, square, circle and triangle. Can the device handle massive gaming requirements? Most probably, with its Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor. This enables the device to deliver 60fps play-back 3D mobile gaming and web browsing. The Xperia Play will also be the first Playstation Certified device, gaining access to Playstation game content from Playstation Suite. Right at the start of Mobile World Congress 2011, Samsung is unveiling the new, bigger, sexier and more powerful Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Take note, it’s not the Galaxy Tab 2 but Galaxy Tab 10.1. This is of course to emphasize this Android tablet’s difference from its predecessor, the original Galaxy Tab. So what are the official specs of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? Well as we all suspected, it will of course run Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS. It will have a 101-inch WXGA TFT LCD display with crystal clear resolution (1280x800), dual-surround sound speakers, 8MP rear-facing camera with auto-focus, a 2MP front-facing camera, Flash 10.1 support, 1GHz Dual Core application processor. 6860mAh battery and the usual HSPA, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity. Design-wise, Samsung did not sacrifice portability in lieu of the bigger screen. Hence, the Samsung Galaxy Tab weighs only 599g and measures 10.9mm thick - making it a slim, light and highly portable device. No words yet on when the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available to the public and for what price point. We’ll know about these information soon. But in the meantime, can we ask you our dear readers - do you think the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has what it takes to compete with the new generation of Android tablets? via [Engadget], via [Samsung Hub] Full Story » | Written by Arnold Zafra for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » More Recent Articles | |
