Google launches translation app for iOS

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google

Google Translate for iOS
Despite having it’s own popular mobile OS to build apps for, Google still somehow finds the time to bring it’s services to Apple’s iOS. Translation is just the latest example of such an app. The app is just like Google’s web version, but with a few mobile enhancements.

As with all Google apps you can speak into your iOS device to get a translation, or you can just input text. The app will understand 15 spoken languages, and translate about 50 of them. The app can even recite up to 23 languages. In case you’re in a crowded area, or you’re using one of the 27 other languages, the text can be made bigger in fullscreen mode, making it easier for others to just read what you’re trying to say.

Of course the app wouldn’t be all that useful on the fly without a data connection. But, those with an iPod touch or who can’t get data to their iPhone, the app will store starred phrases for offline use. So you can prepare a few useful phrases before you leave just in case you need them. Like other Google apps, it’s available for free in the App Store.

Huawei teases us with pre-MWC photos of Ideos X3 and Ideos S7

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

Huawei Ideos X3

Huawei, in case you’re aware of the brand name is teasing us with two products that they will be unveiling at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2011 two weeks from now. And those two products happen to be in the form of a smartphone called the Ideos X3 and an Android tablet known as Ideos S7. Huawei’s Flickr page is currently displaying this two products for all of us to see and admire.

Huawei Ideos S7

But what’s inside these two devices are still unknown as of this time. Although we suspect that the Ideos X3 is a toned-down version in terms of specs price of the previously announced Ideos X5. The Ideos X3 will also be available in red, blue, silver, and black models. It will also have front- and back-facing camera, and the usual soft-touch Android buttons. As for the Huawei Ideos S7, no information is known yet except for the fact that it will sport a slim form factor and will most probably run Android Honeycomb.

Why Verizon-only iOS apps are popping up

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Yesterday, TeleNav announced the release of a Verizon-only iPhone app. The news has sent ripples through industry watchers wondering if fragmentation is going to become a problem for iOS, that is, will we see hordes of apps that only run on a particular carriers device or a particular version of the software's device.

The answer, in short, appears to be no: fragmentation isn't happening. What is happening is AT&T Navigator bills to your AT&T bill while Verizons TeleNav's GPS for Verizon, bills to TeleNav presumably.

So what is all the hubbub over? Money. AT&T gets a cut of the $9.99 they charge a month to customers for using the (almost identical to the Verizon GPS) AT&T Navigator. Since Verizon customers can't access AT&T billing, that left a hole for TeleNav to fill with its software and did so at a much lower price (just $2.99 per month). TeleNav had to assure AT&T that the Verizon iPhone offering didn't compete with the AT&T one. So, they somehow built a wall between the two versions.

Should we sound the alarm? No, this is just about money and filling a market need. This isn't about versions of software that will hold users back.

Now the only question remains, is can AT&T users trick the iPhone into thinking it's a Verizon one to save $7 a month on GPS navigation. (My AT&T iPhone doesn't even see the Verizon GPS app, anyone with a Verizon iPhone see it in the app store?)

32% of Americans admit to stealing Wi-Fi

Section: Communications

1/3 of Americans say they steal Wi-Fi

Preface: If you’re dumb enough not to have your router encrypted with a password, you deserve to have your internet mooched on.

In a recent national poll, 32% of Americans admitted to stealing the Wi-Fi connection from an unknowing neighbor. This almost doubles the poll results from 2008 in which 18% of Americans admitted to the dirty deed. This increase in internet moochings represents not only a larger transition into the digital world for some, but also a downright act of ignorance for others.

“The reality is that many consumers have not taken the steps to protect themselves,” said Kelly Davis-Felner, Marketing Director at the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Well, that seams logical. You also have to take into account the elderly who aren’t exactly the most adept when it comes to the world of technology. While it might only take some of us a few clicks to encrypt our internet, grandparents might find encrypting passwords just about as difficult as sending a chimp into space. Oh, and for all of you twenty-somethings out there, let’s hope that an old couple or two move into your apartment complex.

It doesn’t feel to me like the general public understands the severity of leaving their internet open to others. If you wind up having a tech-savvy neighbor, they could wreak a world of havoc on your personal life. In other words, access to your personal documents, files, pictures and other things that we shall not speak of could have you in a world of trouble. If you currently do not have your internet encrypted or don’t know what that means, contact your ISP immediately and have them walk you through the process step by step. Once you get it down once, changing it in the future will be a breeze.

Verizon iPhone gets town down by iFixIt, internals show dual-mode CDMA/GSM Qualcomm chip

As we have come to expect, a new device is released and then it is quickly torn apart by the crew over at iFixIt. And as you most likely guessed, the Verizon iPhone has become their latest target. That said, while these are always interesting to see, especially for those who like to see the inner guts and are afraid to take our own gadgets apart, this one did reveal something interesting in terms of the chipset. The chip is a Qualcomm MDM6600 which some may recognize as the one that is in the Droid Pro. Or more interesting, it supports CDMA and GSM.

This is the same chipset as the Droid Pro world phone. It supports both GSM and CDMA—which means that Apple could have supported GSM!

But before anyone gets super upset about the potential of this being a world phone, keep in mind that there is no SIM card slot. That said, hit the ‘via’ link below and check out the rest of the images.

T-Mobile acknowledges HTC Pyramid on Twitter, fails to confirm of deny existence

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Coming as a result of what seemed to be a simple tweet.

“HTC Pyramid might be the Android Device I’m waiting for, @htc @TMobile and Bigger screen”

But more importantly, this reply from T-Mobile seems to have unofficially confirmed the handset.

“@Nitaino Stay tuned, more on that later. ~CJ”

Of course, truth be told T-Mobile does not really confirm or deny, but I will say that the response is enough to make me want to learn more. So, how about it T-Mobile—are you ready to spill the details on the HTC Pyramid.

Google brings Priority Inbox to Gmail mobile

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Web, Web Apps, Web Browsers, Google

Google brings Priority Inbox to Gmail mobile

Google has announced the latest update to their Gmail mobile web app—Priority Inbox. And the good news here is that this will be ready and available for most mobile browsers, well, most as long as they support HTML5. That said, two that we can say with certainty include Android devices running Android 1.5 or later and iOS devices running iOS 3.0 or later. Of course, this new found support does come with a limitation in that you cannot set up Priority Inbox or mark messages as important or unimportant from the mobile app. Basically, this will allow you to see the Priority Inbox, think read only for now, but hey its a start. With that, in order to check out the latest version of the Gmail mobile app on your smartphone, fire up the browser and head to gmail.com. Once there you can click “Menu” and you should see your Priority Inbox.

Viewsonic ViewPad 4 to be released with Android 2.4, not Android 2.3

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Wireless

Viewsonic ViewPad 4

Yes, you read it right folks. The previously announced Viewsonic ViewPad 4 tablet which is scheduled for release in April will be loaded with Android 2.4, and not Android 2.3. This was told by Viewsonic representatives to Pocket-link recently. In case you’re wondering what makes the Android 2.4 different from Android 2.3, sources say that it will be the OS’ capability to work with apps developed for Android 3.0 or Honeycomb, the OS built exclusively for Android tablets.

This means that Android 2.4 will be coming out in the open earlier than expected especially since Viewsonic is gearing up the ViewPad 4 for release in April. Now, the question is what brought this decision to release Android 2.4 earlier. Again, according to reliable sources, it was to ensure that dual-core apps designed for Android Honeycomb will run with single-core devices running v2.4, such as the Viewsonic ViewPad 4. Android 2.3 which is supposed to follow Android 2.2 Froyo in the Android development path apparently can’t support Honeycomb apps. So, the need to expedite Android 2.4’s release. Interestingly, Android 2.4 will still be named Gingerbread.

So there. Forget about the next Android OS to be called as the rumored Android Ice Cream. It will still be Gingerbread. And yes, do watch out for the Viewsonic ViewPad 4 coming in this April to get first dibs on what Android 2.4 is capable of doing.

Coming just about a week after the launch, we have the first update for The Daily iPad app. The update brings the app up to version 1.0.1 and it looks like it should correct most of the complaints that we have been hearing about—crashing and slowness. That said, according to the what’s new section in the App Store, The Daily update brings;

  • Increased performance and stability
  • Improved introduction experience
  • Twitter posting updated
  • Twitter login updated
  • Change to image caption text concatenation

The interesting part here is that they recommend you DELETE the app BEFORE you install the update.

“CURRENT DAILY USERS: PLEASE DELETE YOUR CURRENT APP BEFORE UPGRADING TO 1.0.1”
