Section: Communications, Computers, Mobile Computers We already know that the upcoming RIM BlackBerry PlayBook will be available on Sprint, but how about other national carriers? According to an uncovered informational page launched by a marketing company known to work with both RIM and Verizon Wireless, it seems as if the PlayBook will launch on Verizon as well and possibly as an LTE device. The informational page, as you can see above, lists the main features of the tablet including the BlackBerry logo, the Verizon logo, and an image of the tablet. Unfortunately, we do not have official confirmation from Verizon Wireless or RIM that the PlayBook will, indeed, launch on Verizon. The BlackBerry PlayBook would be a welcomed addition to a tablet lineup that would feature the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Xoom. Section: Apple, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile It looks like there’s no stopping the iPhone 4 world domination. Unlike before when the original iPhone 4 was released, it took a long time before it was made available through other channels other than AT&T. But now, with the Verizon iPhone 4 this won’t the case since you can also grab your unit from select Walmart retail stores starting Feb 10, yes that’s starting tomorrow. Verizon iPhone 4 will be available at nearly 600 in-store wireless areas of Walmart. There’s no difference price range though. Walmart will be offering the Verizon iPhone 4 still at $199 for the 16GB model. What’s good about this deal though is that Walmart will also be selling a variety of accessories that you can purchase to go along with your iPhone 4. So, you’ll have a field day selecting car chargers, cases, wraps, and other hands free accessories. So, if you’re planning to get the Verizon iPhone 4, be sure to check out the nearest Walmart store starting tomorrow. Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware HP has finally announced its upcoming tablet PC aka official iPad rival - the HP TouchPad. From its name alone, you can already deduce the fact that HP is certainly gearing up their tablet device as an iPad competitor. From specs to appearance, there’s no denying that HP did its homework and made sure that it will be coming out with a nice tablet device worthy of a space in the ever expanding tablet market. But the question is, does the HP TouchPad has what it takes to compete not only against the iPad but also against the Android tablets? Let’s take a closer look at what the HP TouchPad has to offer. Foremost among its features is of course the fact that the HP TouchPad will be running on latest webOS which according to HP was optimized for the large screen real estate of the TouchPad. Hence, you should expect the TouchPad’s screen to be bright and beautiful. Also, to make it perfect for video calling, the HP TouchPad was equipped with Beats Audio technology for a great sound through its built-in stereo speakers. Now for its technical specs and features, the HP ToucPad features a 9.7-inch XGA capacitive, multitouch screen with a vibrant 18-bit color, 1024x768 resolution display, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, light sensor, accelerometer, compass (magnetometer), and gyroscope, a-GPS for the 3G model, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 16GB or 32GB internal storage. For processing power, the HP TouchPad will rely on a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 1.2GHz. Impressed? If those specs made you somewhat excited to get your hands on the HP TouchPad, you’ll have to wait until summer when HP releases the HP TouchPad. Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile To say the Pre 2 had a short lifespan would be an understatement. Today during it’s “Think Beyond” WebOS press conference HP announced the successor to the Pre line, the Pre 3. Unlike the Pre 2, the Pre 3 is more than just a simple update to the Pre+ with a few minor upgrades. The Pre 3 doesn’t totally deviant from the Pre 2, it does keep a similar overall look, but even with a quick glance the Pre 3 is noticeably taller. That’s because HP finally moved away from the 3.1-inch screen to a 3.6-inch screen, complete with a resolution of 480x800. Inside there’s one of the newest Snapdragon processors running at 1.4 GHz. With the increased power you get a 5 MP back-facing camera capable of 720p video, and a VGA front-facing camera. The front-facing camera can be used for video calling, but it’s not clear what service you need to use for it. This is the kind of WebOS phone I was hoping the Pre 2 would be. It’s nice to see HP finally getting around to making it. Unfortunately we have to wait around for summer for the Pre 3. That’s a long wait, and dangerously close to the launch of the iPhone 5. Palm didn’t do so well when it launched the first Pre near an iPhone launch. Hopefully HP can avoid that this time, the Pre 3 looks very exciting, and it’d be a shame for it to be overpowered by Apple’s latest. Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Netbooks, Wireless According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple’s follow up to the smash hit iPad is rolling on factory lines now with an anticipated April delivery date. The Journal claims the unit will feature camera(s) and a faster processer. As is typical, Apple is keeping a lid on commenting on this rumor. The new model is expected to play a bit of catch up with tablets like the Samsung tab that has cameras and perhaps like the coming Motorola XOOM which features faster processers. As is Apple’s modus operandi, the new model is expected to be thinner as well. The Journal expects the price to be about the same as current models. “The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the first model, these people said. It will have at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing, but the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad, these people said. It will also have more memory and a more powerful graphics processor, they said. A casual observer could note that Apple refreshes product on a pretty strict schedule annually. Since the original iPad was launched in April, it would seem reasonable that Apple’s 2nd attempt would come due at about this time. We don’t think the Journal is stretching their imagination too much here. Shown in the image above is a purported new bezel for the iPad 2. Read about it here. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile In what is purported to be a all-hands email to Nokia employees, Stephen Elop, finally was the ostrich who took his head out of the sand and came to a startling realization: Nokia is in trouble. Elop carefully points out how unresponsive Nokia has been to start-up ecosystems like iOS and Android while at the same time getting eaten into on the low end. Elop points out Nokia is far from out and inspires his team to rise to the challenge. Elop’s email, which Engadget claims is real, is a comforting sign to many Nokia fans who’ve watched their company fall from high end favor. From the message: “[t]hey changed the game, and today, Apple owns the high-end range.” “Google has become a gravitational force, drawing much of the industry’s innovation to its core.” The brutal honesty coming from so high up in Nokia’s chain of command is refreshing. We’ve wondered aloud if Nokia realized the position they were in, if only in the US market. It is now clear they really were not aware. Nokia has the capacity, the minds and the desire to make an interesting comeback. As GI Joe used to tell me, “knowing is half the battle.” Read: [Engadget] Full Story » | Written by JG Mason for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »
Section: Communications, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile According to International Data Corp, smartphones outsold PCs in the last quarter of 2010 in global sales. While sales of both PCs and smartphones were up from 2009, smartphone sales rose 87.2% year over year while PCs only grew 2.7%. Consider this news a sign of the times. It will come as no surprise to Gadgetell readers that smartphones have become powerhouses. From email to web browsing to GPS functionality and high def video recording, smartphones have invaded almost every need for electronics in our life. Many are choosing smartphones as a substitute for a PC, especially in developing countries. Smartphone growth is expected to continue to skyrocket. IDCs numbers do not include tablets such as iPods, iPads or Galaxy Tabs. These devices, which some argue can and will replace their PC functionality will continue to assault PC sales. The app is MotionX GPS Drive and it now sits at version 9.0. But perhaps a little more important than the version number is the new features that have come along with the update. According to the what’s new section in the App Store—those using the app will now have live traffic. - New live traffic flow maps! Select Menu > Search > Traffic.
- Live traffic maps are available for free to all MotionX-GPS Drive users!

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile While we have not seen an official announcement for the HTC Wildfire 2, it looks like we have been given an official look at the device. Though, this comes by way of an ever so brief moment in a recent HTC promo video. That said, the Wildfire 2 looks fairly similar but not identical to the Wildfire 1 and while we were a little surprised to see this video posted now, we would not be all that surprised to see HTC get a little more official once Mobile World Congress kicks off. Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile Online retailer Wirefly has posted their HTC Thunderbolt unboxing video and while they have the device and have begin to play, that still does not mean anyone else can make the purchase just yet. In fact as of now, the release date and the pricing are all still a mystery. And to bring that down just a little bit further, the latest rumors are suggesting that Verizon has further delayed the launch of the Thunderbolt. That said, we are still hoping to see it come available sometime this month and are expecting the price to come in at $250. In the meantime, I guess we can enjoy the unboxing video. Of course this is far from an official announcement, but it does provide one with something to think about, especially if you wanted to go Android but were thinking of committing to the iPhone now that it is available for everyone to order. That said, we should find out soon enough as Sony Ericsson is going to be officially announcing the Xperia Play on February 13th as part of Mobile World Congress.
