Motorola Xoom pre-orders will begin February 17th with Best Buy

While we already mentioned that the Motorola Xoom was going to be priced at $799 and come available with Best Buy on February 24th, we have also learned that it will be available for pre-order beginning on February 17th. Still, with a $799 price tag, one does have to wonder how many takers we are going to see. My guess is that this tablet will do quite well given what it is—a decently spec’d device running a new version of Android, however at the same time I am thinking the price complaints are going to be flying like crazy.

Nokia workers walk-out over Microsoft's partnership with Nokia

Nokia workers walk out over Microsoft's partnership with Nokia

Upon hearing news of the Microsoft/Nokia partnership, roughly a thousand disgruntled employees at the Nokia facility in Tampere walked out of work in protest. Seeing as how this will be the first time that Nokia is manufacturing cell phones for a third party OS, current employees are bound to lose jobs left and right. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop stated that there would be some serious job cuts in Nokia as the Symbian platform will be replaced by Windows Phone 7 OS.

As one of the world’s largest cell phone providers, Nokia joining the fray with Microsoft’s mobile operating system could possibly be a game changer in the mobile market.

In a totally non-petty attempt to make light of the eminent partnership, Google’s Vice President of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, Tweeted this message. Honestly though, if you’re a VP of one of the world’s biggest companies, you wouldn’t have Tweeted that if you weren’t scared.

HP offers up Veer, Pre 3 and TouchPad feature highlight videos

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

HP seems to be doing a good job of getting word out on the Veer, Pre 3 and TouchPad. Or at the very least, they seem to be making a good effort in getting that information out. Of course, time will tell just how well received it actually is. That aside though, the latest information coming from HP includes a few new videos. The videos include one with a general introduction of the Veer, Pre 3 and TouchPad and then an individual video for each device. And before you worry about wasting lots and lots of time, these are all just about 1 minute in length.

HTC Thunderbolt pricing confirmed, $249.99 on a two-year agreement

Yesterday we learned that the HTC Thunderbolt was going to be priced at $749.99 if purchased contract free, and today we have the confirmation of a much more reasonable (on-contract) price—$249.99. Anyway, this latest bit comes by way of a Best Buy advertisement and also notes the “national retail exclusive.” With that, the Best Buy flyer is for the week beginning on February 20th, which means the Thunderbolt should be available sooner rather than later.

Motorola Xoom tablet pricing confirmed, $799 & requiring 1 month of data service to unlock the Wi-Fi

Motorola Xoom tablet pricing confirmed, $799 & requiring 1 month of data service to unlock the Wi-Fi

It looks like Best Buy (by way of an upcoming weekly circular) has revealed the pricing for the Motorola Xoom tablet. According to the details in the ad, the tablet will come priced at $799.99 and it will be available in-store on February 24th. So far, so good. Well, a little high on the price if you ask me, but that aside as there is a bit of disappointing news for anyone hoping to pick this up as a Wi-Fi only device. Further details in that same ad state that in order to “activate Wifi functionality on this device, a minimum of 1 month data subscription is required.” And there you have it, Motorola has locked the Wi-Fi and will not unlock it until you pay for one months worth of data service, which will cost you a minimum of $20 (for 1GB).

ViewSonic introduces the ViewPad 10Pro tablet and V350 smartphone ahead of MWC

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Computers, Mobile Computers

ViewSonic V350 ViewSonic will have a new Android smartphone and dual-boot tablet on display at MWC 2011.  The Android smartphone, known as the V350, features a 3.5 inch touch screen, Android 2.2, 5MP camera, microSD memory expansion, WiFi, Dual-SIM card, and Bluetooth.  No word on pricing or availability for the mid-range Android device, but that information might become clearer at MWC.

The second device announced by ViewSonic is the ViewPad 10Pro tablet which runs Windows 7 Professional and Android 2.2.  The 10 inch touch screen device with 1024 x 600 resolution combines the best of the business optimized software with software optimized for play and pleasure.  The Windows 7 aspect of the tablet allows owners to use the familiar OS for business related tasks, while exploring the intricacies of Android 2.2 during leisure time.  The ViewPad 10Pro does not skimp out on the specs, as it features Intel Oak Trail processor, Flash 10.1, 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro

BARCELONA, SPAIN—(Marketwire - Feb. 11, 2011) - Mobile World Congress – ViewSonic Europe, a global provider of computing, consumer electronics and communications solutions, today announced the launch of its new Dual-SIM Android Smartphone, the V350 and its new 10 inch professional tablet PC, the ViewPad 10Pro. Both products have been designed to enable users to easily access both their work and personal life via just one device and will be previewed for the first time in Europe at Mobile World Congress (2B77 Hall 2) on 14 February 2011.
The V350 Smartphone with 3.5 inch display is an active Dual-SIM device running the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, enabling the use of two network services at the same time. Its Dual-SIM capability is ideal for businesses wishing to provide staff with a mobile device that can offer separate numbers and bills for both personal and business use. This feature also enables travelers to carry just the one phone whilst still be able to take advantage of different pricing plans and network offers for voice and data in various countries. The V350 however does not compromise in other areas, with Android 2.2, a HVGA capacitive touch screen, 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, Micro-SD expansion, Wifi, Bluetooth® 2.1 and assisted GPS navigation.
The ViewPad 10Pro is a 10” professional tablet PC with dual boot functionality, offering a quick switch capability between Windows® 7 Professional for business use and Google Android 2.2 for personal and social entertainment. Dual-boot enables users to access business software that only runs on Windows and investigate Android without switching completely. Many users enjoy the familiarity of Windows but want to get to know Android and configure their preferences before using it more widely. The ViewPad 10Pro is one of the first tablets to have the Intel Oak Trail processor. This, combined with support for flash 10.1 and a new interface provides an excellent navigation experience. It has a 1024x600 LED backlit capacitive multi-touch panel, is fully connected with 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and has at least six hours of battery life.
“Last month Deloitte predicted, in its annual sector forecast, that UK companies will buy more than 10 million tablet devices in 2011. ViewSonic is well placed to capitalize on this market and offers users the best of both worlds from one device,” said Derek Wright, Product Marketing Manager at ViewSonic Europe.
“Our V350 Smartphone is one of the most functional Dual-SIM phones on the market. With Android GMS for access to more than 200,000 Google applications, it has powerful multimedia capabilities and with both SIM cards active, you can place and receive calls on each at any time. The Dual-SIM proposition is compelling and will generate considerable market uptake this year.” Wright concluded.
For the first time in Europe, ViewSonic will also show its ViewPad 10s 3G. Launched at CES in January, the ViewPad 10s now benefits from 3G functionality that enhances current features that include GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

HP TouchPad rumored for June release with $699 price point

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

Assuming these latest rumors are true, then it looks like the HP TouchPad webOS tablet is going to be priced at $699 and come available something in June. That said, the price seems fair as compared to what we have been hearing about in terms of the Motorola Xoom ($799), however at the same time it seems rather high when you consider that you can get an iPad for as low as $499. With that, and with the thought that I would like the TouchPad to do well (both because I like webOS and also because I think the iPad needs more competition) lets just the $699 price tag is an inaccurate rumor.
