It may still be three months from now but this won’t stop Three UK from officially announcing that it will start selling the new Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc handset by April 2011. Three UK’s Silvia Chind, Head of Branded Devices believes that the Xperia Arc will be a great addition to their company’s range of smartphone offerings.
"The Sony Ericsson Arc is a great addition to Three's range of smartphones. The HD Video recording capability is particularly impressive with its Exmor R™ sensor and other multimedia features - such as a face detection feature - allowing you to take, watch and share high quality movies. And our award winning 3G network will ensure Three customers enjoy the mobile internet experience at its best,” said Ms. Chind.
Three UK suits well with the network demand of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc especially since the said device is being geared up as a powerful mobile device best for both gaming and multimedia consumption both offline and online. It will certainly need the fast network speed which Three UK has been providing to its customers in the UK.
Pricing and exact availability date of the Xperia Arc on Three UK will be announced soon. In the meantime, if you’re in the UK and is eyeing to pick up a new Android smartphone in the coming months, you might want to wait up for the Xperia Arc to arrive. In case you’re not aware this Android phone boasts of a 4.2-inch touchscreen display with the Reality Display and Mobile BRAVIA engine support, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), 8.1MP camera, HD video recording, HDMI, and a 1GHz processor.
At the Google Event for Android 3.0 today, an online version of the Android Market was announced and is available for use immediately. Essentially, your Android smartphone is connected to your Google Account and if you sign into the online Android Market website using your Google Account, it will automatically sync with your phone. Instead of having to search for apps using your phone’s small touch screen, you can now browse apps with ease with the online version of the Market. After finding an app that is appealing to you (free or paid, it doesn’t matter), you simply press install and confirm the installation to your Android phone. I have already tried it out with my Android phone and it works as billed.
Feel free to begin using it today and as soon as you install an app, be sure to check your phone because it should already be downloading the app.
We’ve been hearing about The Daily for quite a while, and now the iPad newspaper has finally launched along with subscriptions for the App Store. In case you haven’t heard about it before, The Daily is the News Corp. tablet-only newspaper which had some help from Apple. The dea is that everyday you launch the app you get a 100+ page newspaper.
The Daily is like any other national newspaper, it has hard news, entertainment, gossip, opinion, and sports sections. Unlike a traditional paper, The Daily is somewhat interactive. There’s video and audio to go along with stories, and readers can add their own comments. Pages can also be shared via Twitter, Facebook and email, though it simply links to a website that has a picture of the page being shared. As a paper, News Corp has plenty of time to get the feeling right. Right now it seems like there are a lot of ideas of how to interact with the content: some articles are over many pages, and others scroll vertically. Seems a bit strange considering it’s been in production for quite a while now.
As an app The Daily is also a bit discouraging. In my experience exiting the app will lose the place where I was reading, instead going to a seemingly random spot in the paper when I next opened it. The fews times it didn’t do that, it was because I was getting a new edition, or at least that’s what the app said, the content didn’t seem to change much.
For the first two weeks The Daily is free, thanks to Verizon. After that it will cost 99¢ per week, or $40 a year, which will be automatically billed to you when iTunes bills you.
So who’s excited about the Verizon iPhone launch? Well, Apple has just announced that starting tomorrow you can start pre-ordering the Verizon iPhone 4 both from the Apple Store and Verizon Wireless (www.verizonwireless.com/iphone). But as both Apple and Verizon are anticipating high demand once the pre-order stage kicks-in, orders will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those who will not be able to pre-order due to unavoidable circumstances, you can start placing your iPhone 4 orders from the Apple Store either for delivery to your home or reserve for in-store pick up. You can do this only starting on February 10. The Verizon iPhone 4 will only be available for in-store purchase from Apple retail stores and Verizon stores starting February 10 from 7 in the morning onwards.
As for pricing of the Verizon iPhone 4, I guess you all know by now that it will retail for $199 for the 16GB and $299 for the 32GB model. This of course comes with a two year agreement.
There you go, prepare you money folks. It’s only a few days left before you can finally lay your hands on a spanking new Verizon iPhone 4.
With a few days left before the Mobile Web Congress kicks off, LG has released a new video preview of its upcoming LG Optimus 3D smartphone. In case you’re not aware, the LG Optimus 3D happens to be the company’s first 3D-enabled Android device and the world’s first 3D smartphone. So, you can’t blame us for feeling excited about this new phone.
In fact, the LG folks themselves seem to be pretty excited as well. So they just released a new teaser video of the LG Optimus 3D. And while we couldn’t help but appreciate LG’s effort in teasing us with the goodness of the LG Optimus 3D, our eagle eyes can’t seem to find something which the phone seems to be lacking. Specifically, we couldn’t find the phone’s back-facing camera which according to press release issued by LG recently will be used for 3D recording.
This made us think that LG might be trying to fool us all and just used an incomplete device while doing the video. But then the good folks of Engadget were told, that the handset used was indeed the LG Optimus 3D.
Anyway, take a gander at the teaser video of the LG Optimus 3D and tell us what you think.
In case you plan on picking up the iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless when it officially launches on February 10, you now have another option in case the local Apple store and Verizon Wireless store run out of supplies. Best Buy announced today that it will carry the CDMA iPhone 4 for use on Verizon Wireless on February 10. If you would like to pre-order the iPhone 4, I recommend you do so with Verizon starting tomorrow because Best Buy will not be offering the iPhone 4 for pre-order.
The pricing at Best Buy is identical to the pricing being offered via Verizon: $199 for a 16GB iPhone 4 or $299 for a 32GB iPhone 4.
Statement: Best Buy to Offer iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless Best Buy today announced that the iPhone 4 from Apple on the Verizon Wireless network will be available in Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores across the country beginning Feb. 10, the first day the device is available to the public. "The iPhone 4 is an important device for Best Buy and we are excited to help Apple and Verizon Wireless bring it to even more consumers," said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile. "Our customers have come to expect Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores to carry the best selection of mobile phones anywhere, and offering the iPhone 4 on Verizon's network is our latest effort to deliver on that promise." The iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless retails for $199 for 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model with a new or qualified upgrade with two-year agreement.
Earlier today Google showed off some of the features of Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which is made specifically for tablets. But, those tablets aren’t out yet, and there doesn’t seem to be any firm launch date for them just yet. Instead we get the next best thing, a 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet from Dell.
After waiting for a long time, the Dell Streak 7 is finally available on T-Mobile starting today. It sports a 7-inch 800x480 resolution display, 16 GB of on board storage, a 1 GHz CPU, and everything else you’d expect from a slightly blown-up smartphone. It runs on T-Mobile’s 4G network, which the company has been proud to boast can support video calls, assuming you know someone else with Qik on their smartphone to talk to.
The Dell Streak 7 will run you $199.99 on a two-year contract, and another $25 or $40 a month after that (depending on if you want 200 MB or 5 Gb of data, respectively). At that price, it’s probably worth it to wait for the LG G-Slate on T-Mobile, or the Motorola Xoom on Verizon. But hey, some people just want a blown-up smartphone as a tablet, just ask Samsung.
While the biggest news coming from Verizon Wireless these days is the impending launch of the iPhone 4, Verizon is offering us a friendly reminder that it has a 4G LTE Android device up its sleeves. And according to Verizon’s latest tweet, said LTE smartphone could launch “sooner than we expected.”
The HTC Thunderbolt isn’t expected to launch in the immediate future, but based on this latest tweet, perhaps we will see the smartphone launch sometime in February. With Sprint and T-Mobile already running 4G capable Android smartphones, it is necessary Verizon Wireless launch one of its own as soon as possible. With all of its talk at CES 2011 about its powerful LTE network, many Android fans are anxiously awaiting the deployment of the Thunderbolt.
Here is the full text of the tweet:
Many have waited for the Verizon #iPhone. Some looking for the #4G #LTE HTC #Thunderbolt. May be sooner than we expected!
FROM APPLETELL - Perhaps the most significant metrics this month, at least psychologically, are that Windows and IE lost more ground while Mac, iOS, Safari and Chrome make solid gains. MORE »

The web is running out of internet protocol addresses. That’s right, similar to the 3-digit area code memorization disaster that took us by storm several years ago, it looks as though IP address are going to have to add on more numbers. Luckily for the average consumer, this change will not result in the mind-numbing memorization of new addresses. Google, Yahoo, Facebook and others companies will take the plunge into the new IP addresses dubbed “IPv6” sometime in June for a day long test of the new network. Hopefully this jump to IPv6 will have a “behind the scenes” and will transition seamlessly.
If you’re unfamiliar with all of this nonsense, an IP address is basically the numerical equivalent of a URL. In other words, if you were to go to your browser and type 72.14.204.104 into the address bar, you’ll be taken directly to Google. It’s these combinations of numbers that the web is currently running low on.
The organization that monitors IP addresses is about to send out their final list of available addresses this week.
The Samsung Galaxy S 4G has been a heavily rumored smartphone in recent weeks, and now T-Mobile has gone official with the device. The Samsung Galaxy S 4G, which would likely become the successor to the original Samsung Vibrant, is expected to launch sometime in February. The four inch Super AMOLED display will remain the same, as will its 5MP rear facing camera and 16GB onboard storage. The changes between the two devices come in the 4G radio, Android 2.2, front facing camera, and a new pre-loaded movie—Inception. Albeit the last difference shouldn’t really make or break your decision in buying the Galaxy S 4G, unless you’re a die-hard Inception fan.
It will also come pre-loaded with the Qik video application to allow users to video chat right away. Through T-Mobile TV, users can view HD videos through the mobile HD TV subsection. Unfortunately, no word on pricing or whether it will be upgraded to Android 2.3 at a later date, but hopefully we will see the Galaxy S 4G launch for an affordable price in the coming weeks.

Anyway, without further adieu, those interested in watching can click on over to YouTube and see the action as it unfolds.
As we expected, the LG Optimus V has come available with Virgin Mobile USA. The handset has arrived with an off-contract price tag of $149.99 and can be used with the $25, $40 or $60 per month calling plans which offer 300, 1,200 or unlimited minutes respectively. Calling plans aside though, in terms of hardware features, the LG Optimus V features a 3.2 inch touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, GPS and Android with full access to the Android Market.
FROM APPLETELL - Despite the smaller show floor, there were still a lot of great products to try out at Macworld Expo 2011. Here are the three items that most impressed the Appletell writers in attendance. MORE »
Recently Sony submitted it’s Reader app to Apple to bring Sony Reader to the iOS platform. Unfortunately for Sony, Apple rejected the app. Unfortunately for iOS users, the reason why could easily be an issue for Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo, or any other company that offers eBooks through iOS apps.
According to Trudy Miller, an Apple spokesperson who talked to All Things D, Apple is “now requiring that if an app offers customers the ability to purchase books outside of the app, that the same option is also available to customers from within the app with in-app purchase." Technically this isn’t a change from the App Store Guidelines, but it is a different way of enforcing them. According to the guidelines, an app that allows for paid content must offer the option to offer that content through Apple’s payment API. So, Sony can’t direct Reader users to Mobile Safari to read books in the Reader app, it also needs to offer those books through Apple’s API, which would give Apple a 30-percent cut of the payment.
That means that the Kindle, Nook and Kobo apps that are currently available through the App Store wouldn’t be accepted if they were submitted today since none offer users to buy eBooks through the app. Sure, it could be easier to buy those eBooks through the apps, but how would that effect the price of eBooks if Amazon, Sony, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo don’t want to give a straight 30-percent cut to Apple. In-app purchases are also regulated by Apple, just ask Comixology who routinely sees sales end early when buying through the iOS app because Apple changes the prices earlier than the company’s website does.
If Apple intends to follow through with this in all eBooks apps, or other apps that link to paid services, it raises a lot of questions. Would Pandora have to add an option to buy a subscription through it’s iOS app? What about Dropbox, Netflix, or Hulu? We’ll just have to wait and see what comes out of it, hopefully it doesn’t change anythign for the worse.
Coming as a follow up to the news that Yahoo Mail was the culprit behind the Windows Phone 7 data leak issues, Yahoo has offered up an official statement letting everyone know that this was an issue with how “Microsoft chose to implement IMAP for Yahoo! Mail.” In other words, Yahoo! Mail is available (and just fine) on other mobile platforms to include iOS, Android, Symbia and RIM and you should not be afraid to use Yahoo! Mail on your mobile device because with the exception of the current Windows Phone 7 issues, it will not cause you to use more than you allotted monthly data allowance. That said, here is the statement;
"Yahoo! Mail is widely available on tens of millions of mobile phones, including those running on Apple iOS, Android, Nokia Symbian, and RIM. The issue on the Windows Phones is specific to how Microsoft chose to implement IMAP for Yahoo! Mail and does not impact Yahoo! Mail on these other mobile devices. Yahoo! has offered to provide Microsoft a near-term solution for the implementation they chose, and is encouraging Microsoft to change to a standard way of integrating with Yahoo! Mail, which would result in a permanent fix."
At the launch of the Boxee Box, we were promised an update to bring Netflix to the box in the near future, with the latest update saying “late January.” As anyone with a Boxee Box can prove, that update is nowhere to be found now in early February. Now it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to get Netflix streaming on the Boxee Box.
Today boxee has announced that they have to delay the Netfix update due to Netflix’s security requirements. It seems Boxee isn’t satisfying those requirements just yet, but they have gotten Netflix to work. Those at Boxee HQ say they’ve watched Netflix on the Boxee Box already. The update should be coming soon, but there’s no word on when exactly that will be.
In the post about it, Boxee acknowledged that the company gets a lot of questions about when Netflix is coming to the box, but they have’t been able to do so yet. Hopefully the update can come soon, I really want to get my hands on one of those Boxee remotes with a Netflix button.
