Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile AT&T is currently collaborating with FlipSwap, a consumer electronics buyback program solutions provider in carrying out a new trade-in service to AT&T stores nationwide. The new AT&T trade-in service is scheduled to be offered starting February 13 and will let you turn in your old wireless phones in exchange for an AT&T promotional card that reflects the current condition and value of your device. This value will be assessed and determined by FlipSwap. And what can you do about the promotional card? You can use it to offset the cost of some of AT&T’s latest wireless devices or to purchase other AT&T products and services. AT&T will accept all phones, regardless of manufacturer and date of purchased. Once started, you can visit any AT&T retail store and request for the trade-in service. An AT&T store rep will help you in facilitating the trade-in request and provide you with value estimate for your device as well as the necessary FlipSwap instructions and forms. They will even help you in wiping out your device clean of any personal information. You will then receive and AT&T promotional card via mail after two to four weeks. So, are you participating in this trade-in service? Now is your chance to let go of old phones and other AT&T products. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile With AT&T’s announcement that on Feb 13, select smartphones on AT&T will receive the new Mobile Hotspot App, we’re full of hope that the iPhone will be one of those selected devices. This hotspot app would allow Apple’s iPhone to be used as a WiFi hotspot for things like, say, the iPad. Why is AT&T mum on this (today, the Verizon pre-sale start day)? By Feb 13, AT&T will have given Verizon a 3-day head start as the Verizon iPhone goes up for general public pre-sale on the 10th. If the move from AT&T is to help stem iPhone customers jumping ship, then wouldn’t it makes sense to do this on the 9th? It just doesn’t add up for me. Both Mossberg and Pogue let fly the AT&T iPhone will receive this feature, though Pogue edited out this in his review after publishing. Is it just a coincidence that two guys Apple trusts made the same mistake at the same time? Doubtful. We’re inclined to believe the feature will come to the iPhone. Why AT&T has not come out and said this, instead launching the service with the HTC Inspire is beyond us? Is it just mud in the eye for Apple by doing this on an Android phone first? A few days late, after the buzz of Verizon iPhone presale dies down? Got a theory? Let us know in the comments. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Verizon Wireless has announced that it will throttle 5% of its users. Boom. The top 5% of data consumers will see their speed diminish not just for the remainder of the billing cycle but for the next month as well. Take that heavy-use customers. 5% of Verizon’s 94 million users is 4.7 million. Heads up: Verizon Wireless strives to provide customers the best experience when using our network, a shared resource among tens of millions of customers. To help achieve this, if you use an extraordinary amount of data and fall within the top 5% of Verizon Wireless data users we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand. Our proactive management of the Verizon Wireless network is designed to ensure that the remaining 95% of data customers aren't negatively affected by the inordinate data consumption of just a few users. But wait, that’s not all. Additionally, Verizon is going to mess with images, text and video when it feels like its network it threatened. Verizon says, “the optimization process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on your device.” That isn’t good for a Retina display device now is it? Verizon is definitely hedging their bets on how the iPhone device will impact their network. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile Today is “go” day for the Verizon iPhone. Thousands of loyal Verizon customers will likely jump at the chance to grab a phone they’ve envied from afar. For the most part, the phone is identical to the one AT&T launched 7 months ago; but the service difference draws a couple of things potential buyers should pay attention to. #1 Can do: You can hear me now. Voice calls are the primary function of any cell phone, right? Users on the AT&T network might disagree with that statement because voice calls necessarily have to play second fiddle to data. Verizon’s network for voice is the biggest selling feature for the iPhone. Early reviews have made clear that the Verizon device handles voice calls best. No surprise there. #2 Can’t do: Walk and chew gum at the same time. The Verizon iPhone can’t do simultaneous voice and data and it might matter to you. This isn’t the talking on the phone and need to book a reservation via Open Table issue that AT&T is pushing. This is far more likely to be an issue when using the exciting personal hotspot feature. Think about it: you’ve got other devices sharing the connection when a call comes in - your data connection dies. Done. Fin. Kaput. #3 Can’t do: Speed It would appear that AT&T does indeed have the faster data network. Walt Mossberg found, “AT&T's network averaged 46% faster at download speeds and 24% faster at upload speeds. This speed difference was noticeable while doing tasks like downloading large numbers of emails, or waiting for complicated Web pages to load.” Tolpolsky over at Engadget found eerily similar results. #4 Can’t do: Cross oceans Verizon’s CDMA tech doesn’t have many cohorts around the world. That means your iPhone won’t do you much good besides slurping some free WiFi. Some of the Verizon’s devices are global (Droid 2 Global), thanks to the addition of another radio, but iPhone 4 does have it. Stay home and you’ll be fine. #5 Can it do iPhone 5? Are you a big enough geek to care if your phone is “outdated” in just 4 months? If so, you might want to hold off until June when Apple is expected to release the iPhone 5 - their annual update they tend to stick to like clockwork. What will Verizon get? It would seem odd if Verizon was hog-tied and left out of the iPhone 5 party until a year from today. Apple, nor Verizon, so far have commented on what they will or won’t do. Mossberg offers this assessment, “officials at both Apple and Verizon will only say they don't intend to make Verizon customers unhappy, but that could mean anything.” That doesn’t help, much. And, as I’ve said before, I’d be very surprised if iPhone 5 didn’t include a LTE or HSPA+ radio (call it 4G if you like) to keep up the Jones (Android in this case). I don’t see Apple setting themselves up for the ready-made marketing campaign that is, “Droid does 4G, iPhone doesn’t.” Bottom line Are any of these can do/can’t do dealbreakers? Probably not. Most of us seem to use voice less and less these days. A momentary data disruption probably won’t bring you to tears. Traveling internally isn’t for everyone. The prospect of an updated model probably shouldn’t keep anyone on the sidelines. But, it’s good to go in eyes wide open. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Assuming these rumors are accurate, then it looks like T-Mobile has an Android superphone coming soon, well, fairly soon. The handset is from HTC and as of now is sporting the codename of Pyramid. As for the features, those include a 4.3 inch (960 x 540) qHD display and a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor with support for the T-Mobile HSPA+ network. With that, so far there is nothing in terms of what the price may end up being, however it was suggested that T-Mobile could launch the device as soon as May. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile We first heard some rumors that Verizon employees were not going to be able to buy the iPhone 4 when it first came available, and now it looks like that is actually how things are going down. The details are coming by way of The iPhone Blog who have gotten their hands on an email memo from Verizon to Verizon employees and while not told they cannot, they are being urged to “postpone” purchases “for the time being.” Seems like a bad deal if you are a loyal employee that has been waiting for the iPhone as long as the customers. Via [TiPb] Focus on Customer Is Key to Verizon iPhone Launch To help ensure we meet customer demand for iPhones, Verizon is urging employees and their families to postpone purchases of the popular smartphone, whether online or in retail stores, for the time being. "Customers and non-customers alike have waited for years to see this product on America's most reliable wireless network," notes Verizon Wireless Chief Operating Officer John Stratton. "Demand will be unprecedented. "Now it's here. This is our chance to show those millions of people what it means to be a Verizon customer — providing them the best network, joined by the very best customer service and support, all adding up to a world-class customer experience. "Part of that experience is ensuring we're able to meet our customers' needs in the midst of what will surely be unprecedented customer demand. "I know customers aren't the only ones who are excited – employees are, too. While I share your excitement, over the coming weeks we all need to do our part to meet our customers' needs — this means putting our customers first. "After all, that's the way we do business. That's the Verizon Credo in action. "This is an historic moment in time to rally together and show our loyal customers and new ones what our culture is all about." Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers While the details on this one are far from official at this point, they are said to be coming from a “reliable source.” Anyway, it looks like the current rumors are suggesting that the unlimited Verizon 4G LTE data plans are going to be priced at $29.99 per month. Of course, on the flip side, there was also mention that the plan would be priced at $29.99 (for 3G) and then come with a $15 add-on for the 4G data. Bottom line, while it would be nice to see this launch for a flat $29.99 per month, we cannot help but realize that is the current 3G data pricing and therefor that plus the additional $15 per month for 4G seems more likely. Either way though, this is still rumor at this point. Via [Droid-Life] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Communications, Computers, Mobile Computers With just about a week to go until the HP Palm webOS event (it is scheduled for February 9th), we now have a teaser video available. Talk about trying to build some hype, lets just hope it works. That aside though, the video is titled “Think Beyond” and it seems to give just enough of a look to leave us wanting more without revealing all that much. All we can say is that at this time, the tablet looks rather nice, of course there is not much to really see. The video is black (tablet) on black (background) and shows off some sleek curves, a few buttons and what appears to be a speaker grill. Still, at 9 seconds it is hard to get all that good of a look, but we would be lying if we were to say we were not curious. Section: Apple, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile As expected, Verizon has opened up the iPhone 4 pre-orders just about one hour ago. Nothing surprising here, the phone can be pre-ordered by existing customers and those customers have the option to get a new line of service or add another line to a family plan. In terms of pricing, $199 or $299 for the 16GB and 32GB model respectively and there are more than a few accessories available during the checkout process including some cases, Bluetooth headsets and more. Anyway, while Verizon seems to have not reached the limit on available pre-orders just yet, I can say that the website is crawling at this moment—much more so than it was at 3AM sharp. Either way, those who are not current customers will be able to join the Verizon iPhone madness on February 10th, or February 9th to make a reservation for the 10th.
