Section: Computers, Laptops Google is continuing to roll-out Cr-48s to users, though the units have been limited to those within the US. A recent update makes it look like Google might be planning to ship the units to those outside the US. Or, at least give US users a chance to choose which 3G carrier they want to use. Hexxeh, the hacker that we can thank for first giving regular users a chance to install Chrome OS on netbooks has found that a recent update to Chrome OS enables HSPA 3G support in the Cr-48. Using the HSPA connection isn’t exactly as easy as using the Verizon connection, though. You need to be in developer mode by flipping the switch under the battery, and you’ll need an AT&T SIM card. After that, all you need is to input a a shell command. Unlike the Verizon connection, Google doesn’t have a deal with AT&T to give users 100 MB of free data, so don’t be surprised if the data costs quite a bit of money. It is still promising for current and hopeful Cr-48 users who want to use AT&T or who want to use the Cr-48’s 3G connection overseas. Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones If you’re interested in picking up the HTC Inspire 4G from AT&T as soon as possible, you’ll be pleased to know RadioShack is running a special pre-order promotion for the Android 4G device starting today. As you probably know, the HTC Inspire will be available for $99 on a two year contract, and RadioShack will let you put down $50 towards the order and it will be refunded in the form of a RadioShack gift card. In addition, those who opt for the pre-order will be given a complimentary $30 store credit towards Inspire accessories. If pre-ordering isn’t your cup of tea, then you can always purchase the HTC Inspire from AT&T, or other authorized third party retailers starting February 13 for $99 on contract. Section: Business News, Apple, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones While Verizon Wireless has released to the public that the pre-order sales for the iPhone 4 were the highest in the carrier’s history, it’s hard to gauge just how big that number is. Fortunately, an analyst from RBC Capital is claiming Verizon Wireless sold as many as 100,000 iPhones 4s in the 17 hour pre-order opportunity before the limited supplies ran out. Moving forward, by March over 2.9 million iPhone 4s could be in the hands of Verizon Wireless customers and a grand total of 11.6 million by the year’s end. It will be very interesting to see the reaction to the public when the iPhone 4 becomes available for normal retail sales on February 10. With Apple’s famed iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless, it’s pretty hard for any other carrier to compete with their offerings of iOS and Android. Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Netbooks, Wireless This week an ITG report claimed 16% of Galaxy Tabs purchased over the holiday season were returned. Samsung issued a statement refuting that data, saying the Tab return rate is much, much smaller. Where does the truth lie? From the Samsung Tommorrow blog: “The return rate of the Galaxy Tab in the US as claimed by an North American market research firm is incorrect. According to Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business the return rate is below 2 percent.” The blog entry offers nothing more. 2% was the return rate ITG quoted for the iPad over the same time period. The ITG report relied on data from 6,000 retailers from November to mid January in the US only. iPads were only counted by ITG from Verizon stores. If we ignore the iPad return rate, the rate from 6,000 retailers should be still accurate data. Perhaps Tab returns are higher in the US than abroad, where the majority of Tabs were sold, which might bring the overall return rate down to the 2% ballpark. The fact remains that over 1 out of 10 Tabs appear to be returned and this is still a number to take notice of. Section: Communications, Computers, Mobile Computers, Features, Originals, Columns, Who's On Crack What's the most common phrase heard around the Gadgetell newsroom? Is it "I love Apple?", "that's cool!" or "sweet!"? Answer: none of them, it's "they are on crack." This week we take a look back at the things that made us chuckle in the tech world. This week, it seems there were more folks on dope than not. Lets get to this week's accused: Verizon is the network of the early-risers “Do not let your wife, kids or parents use an iPhone” -Verizon “Think Beyond” are they being cute with “Think Different”??? Apple makes me watch Rupert Murdoch for no good reason. Early bird gets the iPhone Wow, in the wee hours of the morning, Verizon was able to accomplish what took them all day long with other phones. So says our Robert Nelson, “The Verizon iPhone 4 pre-orders began at 3AM EST on February 3rd and less than 24 hours later they are no longer available. Yup, a visit to the iPhone 4 splash page on the Verizon Website lets us know that they are "no longer taking pre-sale orders." “ Seriously? Is it folks in the west that waited up till midnight to place an order or freaky-deaky types that set their Droid alarms to make this call? I am blown away. Wait, I thought iOS was dying?O “Verizon may have just bought the biggest bag of substanceless hype and wind Steve Jobs has ever peddled while AT&T snickers behind its hand. The iPhone brand is in worse shape than I thought was even possible,” says Eric Raymond. Um, OK. It would appear that Verizon users were in fact waiting for the iPhone. But really, 3am waiting? Have you guys been sitting around huffing glue until 3am for the past few years? That’s gonna leave a mark. “Seriously, don’t buy an iPhone” Is Verizon trying carefully not to destroy their exclusive Droid brand by asking employees and families not to buy an iPhone yet? Our Robert Nelson writes about “an email memo from Verizon to Verizon employees and while not told they cannot, they are being urged to "postpone" purchases "for the time being." “ Is it a “we’re not sure how this is going to turn out” kind of issue for Verizon? Is Verizon looking out for employees in effort to keep substandard product out of their hands? Is Verizon just trying to keep some stock in the store? What gives? “Think Beyond” says webOS teaser Getting dangerously close to the “what did Robert write about that I can poke fun at column”, here’s another from Nelson, “the video is titled "Think Beyond" and it seems to give just enough of a look to leave us wanting more without revealing all that much. All we can say is that at this time, the tablet looks rather nice, of course there is not much to really see. The video is black (tablet) on black (background) and shows off some sleek curves, a few buttons and what appears to be a speaker grill.” My translation: we see a fat girl dance for 9 seconds. I mean, come on man, look at that! It looks like hardware that has spent way too much time with Roy Rogers free fixins bar. It looks like a chubby Centro for don’s sake. I see textured plastic (barf). I see fat rolls, er un-sexy curves. I see shiny plastic, shark-like speaker ports -OK, that could be construed as sexy. But I think Robert is reaching with looks nice. We all want to see something amazing, but then, we’ve wanted that since the Palm buyout and haven’t. We’re getting close to the end of even my fanboy patience with webOS. Apple forces us all to watch Rupert Murdoch I swear Apple must like seeing us all in pain. Their “tune into The Daily launch to see iPad two” leaks caused us all to watch Murdoch babble about print and how he’s paying 100 writers to put out 100 pages of stuff everyday, and make it good. Whatever, bloggers know that’s just not possible. You didn’t hear Apple was going to say all kinds of cool stuff about the iPad 2? If you follow our supreme Editor Robert Nelson, you would have known. Heck he told me via twitter: “@masonahoy none needed, iPad 2 is coming with The Daily app pre-installed. It will even magically launch every day when the paper is ready.” So there I sat, watching ink men dance around, then this ginger tries to impress his boss, then they finally bring out the Apple guy, Eddy Cue. Wait, he’s got a mock turtleneck on, jackpot. If they are trying to confuse us and make us think this is Steve Jobs, who is out on sick leave, this is going to be gold. But wait, he’s got no jacket to pull it out of. No envelope. Eddy yaps about great year for iPad, XXX sold, so many apps, blah blah As a trained Apple event listener, I know what is coming next: the unveil. Only the dude takes off. But…but, but. Then Q&A time, only no one has the cajones to ask where the beef the iPad 2 is? Yes, focus on the subscription model, you morons. Ask about the freaking iPad 2. And it’s over. I’ve got nothing. I feel like, well, I feel like I’ve been at an Apple event. Full Story » | Written by JG Mason for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »
Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers Another day and another post that is dealing with a possible release date for the HTC Thunderbolt and/or the Motorola Xoom. Anyway, this latest has come from information posted on the Grand Rapids South Best Buy Facebook page and lists the dates as February 14th for the Thunderbolt smartphone and February 24th for the Xoom tablet. Time will tell just how accurate these dates will be, but until we hear something official from Verizon, these will remain nothing but rumor. Section: Apple, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile We have seen a few Verizon iPhone related commercial thus far, the first came from Verizon and it was all about the wait. That was followed up with one from Apple which showed the Verizon iPhone and the AT&T iPhone side by side and made it seems like things between the carriers were smooth. Well flash forward till the present and it looks like Verizon has come out swinging with their latest—“Yes. I can hear you now.” With that, it looks like things may get interesting for a little while. Wonder if AT&T has anything waiting or in the works to take that second shot. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile As evidence of the above image it looks like AT&T has once again found it in their heart to limit what users are able to do with their phones. The latest device, and nothing that we have not seen them do in the past, to get hit is the yet-to-be-released HTC Inspire 4G. Bottom line, it looks like the Inspire 4G will only be able to download and install apps from the Android Market as the option to “allow installation of non-Market applications” is not showing in the Settings. Of course, thanks to those who care, there is always the workaround and that comes in the form of the “Android Sideload Wonder Machine” which was released by the crew over at Android Central. Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google Those sporting an Android smartphone and using Blogger may want to check this out as Google has released an official Blogger app for Android. The app is available in the Android Market and similar to using Blogger, it is available for free. Nothing overly surprising here as the app does what you would expect—allowing you to compose a new post, attach images, save drafts and more. The one catch, or downfall will depend on which verison of Android you are using as the Blogger app requires Android 2.1 or later. That said, the features include; - Multiple accounts and blogs: You can easily switch between different accounts and blogs that you have author rights to. Simply choose your account and blog and you are all set to go.
- Write and save/publish: You can write a post, assign labels, and then either save it as a draft or immediately publish it. Saving as draft is handy if you need to wait until you have Internet connectivity.
- Photos from camera and gallery: If you see something interesting, you can take a photo directly from the app and include it in the blog post. You can also browse your gallery to include the ones you like.
- Sharing to Blogger from gallery or browser: Blogger is one of the available sharing options. If you come across a photo in the gallery, or a website while browsing, you can share the content to the Blogger app directly from the sharing menu.
- Share location: You can share your location by activating the location bar and selecting the correct location. This information will be included in your post.
- View saved/published posts: By switching to the List View, you can view all your drafts and published posts that you wrote using the app. By performing a long-press on a published post you can invoke a menu that includes the option to view your post in a browser.

Section: Computers, Security, Features, Originals If you run a vBulletin forum, you may have noticed a sharp rise in new user registrations. At first it seems like a good thing, but then the registrations start coming in so quickly it probably set off an internal alarm bell. Listen to it. Security experts have discovered that spammers have discovered a way to crack ReCAPTCHA, the popular program most vBulletin forums use as part of their new user registration process. Apparently these spammers obtained a software program that allowed them to easily get around the ReCAPTCHA requirements and sign up hundreds of fake accounts that promptly began posting all kinds of spam, some of it pornographic and much of it hawking pharmaceuticals. While the emails used for the fake accounts seem to be mostly yahoo.uk addresses, the IP addresses are located in Russia. Google, who own ReCAPTCHA, firmly denies the software has been cracked although they admit a rise in spam was detected. If your forum has been hit, there is an easy way to stop the automated registrations in their tracks. Simply open your vBulletin Admin Control Panel and choose Human Verification Manager from the Settings menu. Once there, choose Question & Answer then click on 'Add New Question' and save your question before clicking on 'Add New Answer' and then save again. It's a good idea to come up with several questions and answers. A new user will be presented with a randomly chosen one. Since a human has to figure out and answer, the bots will be thwarted. I did this on a business forum I run and we went from over 100 fake registrations a day to zero. It's likely there is a botnet behind this latest campaign, and it was probably used to set up the email accounts the fake users have as well. This is just the latest sign that spammers are moving away from traditional email spam. Read [vBulletin.org] Full Story » | Written by Sue Walsh for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Apple, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile It looks like Verizon is working hard to get an iPhone 4 out to those who pre-ordered. Mine, as seen from the above screenshot has already been listed as “shipped.” The order has been assigned a FedEx tracking number, however at least as of this posting there is nothing in terms of the history for shipping. In other words, while Verizon was touting free next day by 3PM shipping and my order has technically “shipped” I am not expecting it to arrive today. That said, I am fairly certain that neither Apple, Verizon or FedEx would head any complaints if it were to be delivered. And for those wondering, I was online at 3AM sharp to get my order in. Lastly, while we may begin seeing these notifications pop-up online it seems that this is just the prep work for Verizon and the shipments will begin arriving on the 10th or maybe a day early at best. That said, this is one case I hope that I am wrong. Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile Finally, Microsoft made some noises about the upcoming updates to Windows Phone 7. And since this has taken them so long, Microsoft is finally answering feedbacks and comments by early Windows Phone 7 adopters. Speficially, the update to Windows Phone 7 will finally bring in one most sought after feature - cut, copy and paste functionality. So, soon you will be able to copy text from emails, text messages, web pages and Office mobile documents and paste it anywhere on your Windows Phone 7 device while using an app that lets you type text. It would be interesting to find out how well this feature will come out for Windows Phone 7 devices. Other new features that the update will bring include - faster apps and games start up and resume, and better Windows Marketplace search experience. Not too much for a first update, right?
