Latest report from research firm has revealed what was inevitable - that Google Android is now the world’s leading smartphone platform, well at least for Q4 2010. Yes, Android beats Nokia at number 2 and Apple at no. 3 According to Canalys, Android-based smartphone shipments have reached 32.9 million, while shipment of Nokia’s Symbian-powered smarthphones have reached 31.0 million. Despite this however, Nokia retains its leading position for the whole of 2010 with a market share of 28%.
Come to think of it, Android’s lead surge in Q4 2010 is not really that surprising. It was in that quarter where major manufacturers started showing their support for the Android platform with a plethora of Android smartphones released in the market. LG, Samsung, Acer and HTC gained 4,127%, 1,474%, 709% and 371% smartphone market shares respectively. HTC and Samsung’s combined market share alone accounted for a huge 45% of the total Android platform share in Q4 2010.
Meanwhile, both Apple and RIM are at no.3 and no.4 with 16.0% and 14.4% respectively.
Remember the Motorola Atrix, the darling of CES? You know, the one that has a laptop dock that allows webtop apps to be used via the phone? Of course you do. Now we have a leak on pricing of the mulitmedia dock: according to Fommy.com, the Motorola Atrix multimedia dock will sell for just $59.99.
Expected to launch next month, the Atrix is shaping up to be a significant player out of the gate. Besides the Tegra dual core processor, the Atrix unique ability to have programs run off it and its data connection bring something new to the table. It looks like AT&T will be first to offer the Atrix.
The site offers the dock but is currently out of stock.
So far, we’ve heard the laptop dock should cost about $150, making it a pricey option. The info came to us a via a Best Buy employees conversation with an AT&T rep who heard it from her sisters cousin’s former college roomate. It’s a rumor.
We are still waiting to see something official from Verizon in terms of the new rebate policy for smartphones, Droid-Life is now showing off what appears to be an updated listing of which smartphones will (and will not) have rebates attached. According to this latest information, it looks like some of the smartphones will have the rebates removed all together and some will drop from $100 down to $50. Some of the devices that have had the rebate removed are the Droid 2 global, Samsung Fascinate, Storm2 9530, Curve 8530 and the Droid X. In terms of the $100 to $50 rebate list, that looks to include the Droid Incredible, Curve 3G, Samsung Continuum, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Tour as well as the Droid and Droid 2. With that, while we remain waiting for the official word you can check out the list below.
First there was the talk of Verizon dropping and lowering mail-in-rebates for smartphones and now there is talk of them lowering the pricing for the Equipment Protection Plans. And we should point out that at this point this is still rumor and comes by way of a leaked document. Anyway, this is expected to be going into effect on February 1st and could mean that the Total Equipment Coverage will drop from $7.99 to $6.99 and the Wireless Phone Protection will drop from $6.00 to $5.18. Granted, not the biggest drop one could hope for, but when paying a small fortune for wireless service—every little bit will help.
While we have already seen some evidence that Verizon is going to be dropping the mail-in-rebates for smartphones priced at $150 or higher, we are still awaiting the official word from Verizon. But with that, there is some more evidence that this will be happening, and happening soon—possible as of today. The latest comes in the form of a “Mail-In Quick Rebates” form from Verizon and it is dated as of today January 31st. Anyway, this does come as evidence however the confusing part here is that while this does offer some details, the details are in what is missing—the higher priced smartphones. For example, devices such as the BlackBerry Storm2, the Droid X and the Droid Pro are missing.
While we have seen a fair bit of information in terms of the LG G-Slate Android tablet, up until this point there was one thing still missing—a good and live look. Well, that has kind-of sort-of changed as the device has recently made a brief appearance on YouTube. The video, which is coming by way of MysteryGuitarM and shows what appears to be the G-Slate with two camera on the back. The overall video comes in at 4 minutes and 14 seconds, however the good stuff comes in at the 3:35 mark.
A new screenshot has recently leaked from AT&T and it is telling tales of what we can expect to see come available this year. Of course before anyone gets super excited, it is not mentioning devices by name, but that aside there is still enough to make us want to pay some attention to AT&T. According to the screenshot, AT&T will be releasing a total of 20 4G capable devices in 2011 with two of them coming as exclusive devices arriving in the first quarter. Furthermore, for those hoping to see more Android with AT&T, good news on that front as the magic number is 12. Yup, AT&T is expecting to launch a dozen Android smartphones this year. And interestingly enough, AT&T only has seven Android smartphones at the present time. With that, we are left wondering what that 20 will consist of, granted we know some Android but maybe we will also see some Windows Phone 7, some webOS, some BlackBerry and maybe even a new iPhone. You know, a little bit of everything.
Motorola officially announced the Droid Bionic smartphone earlier this month during CES and similar to many of the other handsets that were announced at that time—they left out the important details—the pricing and release date. That said, similar to the HTC Inspire 4G and the Motorola Atrix 4G, the Droid Bionic was recently (and briefly) discovered on Amazon. In the case of the Bionic there was nothing in terms of a release date, however it did show a $149.99 price tag. Of course, the real question here is whether or not that price is accurate. And for those who may have forgotten or simply missed the original announcement, the Droid Bionic is going to feature a 4.3 inch touchscreen display, dual-core 1GHz processor, 8 megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera and Android 2.2 with support for the Verizon LTE network.

New research conducted by a Stanford University student says that by comparing ourselves to our friends on Facebook, we are lead to believe that they lead more fulfilling lives. Just think about the last time a friend or relative of yours posted a picture of them in Cancun for the summer. Didn’t it feel wonderful to ogle through their vacation pics with the comfort of your office chair?
In any event, the doc brings up a good point. Just about everything we post on social networks is either an update of what we’re doing, what we’ve accomplished, and other sort of “victories.” You don’t often find your friends posting sad or depressing updates. And if you do happen to come across said updates, you can expect them to be followed up by a dozen or so positive updates including: I love my hubby, going out tonight or TGIF! The doc also brings up another good point being think about your own life. Facebook involves hundreds of millions of people sharing their story the way they want to share it. For every one picture you see of the stereotypical happy family on a vacation, I’d be willing to bet $5 that they went through some quarrels on their way there that you’ll never see or hear of.
In conclusion: stop comparing yourself to other people.
