Section: Communications, Computers, Mobile Computers One of the perks that comes along with Android devices is the ability to run alternate versions of the software. Of course, that comes as courtesy of the developers who put in all the hard work (such as Cyanogen) and probably more important, the ROMs are only available for those willing to do the required work to get them loaded onto their devices. That said, we do not often talk about loading up custom ROMs here, but the latest port of CyanogenMod 7 (done by Technomancer) for the Samsung Galaxy Tab is worth a few minutes as it brings Gingerbread to the tablet. Of course, the warning here is that as of now there are something features that may still not be working. In other words, the port is still early in development. That said, it was noted that voice calls (yes, voice calling on the Galaxy Tab—but please use a Bluetooth headset if you must) along with Wi-Fi and 3G data as well as GPS are working. Needless to say, this one may not be ready for everyone as of now, but it is something worth keeping an eye on if you are using a Galaxy Tab and hoping for Gingerbread. And as always, if you choose to proceed and you mess things up—dont come complaining to us. Bottom line, read and re-read the directions before even thinking about starting. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Wireless It looks like T-Mobile has a few mobile broadband modems in the works for the coming year. Of course, this likely means the current models, the T-Mobile Jet and the T-Mobile Rocket 2.0 will likely either get less expensive or simply fade out of the lineup. But more important as compared to the two existing models are the ones that are going to arrive later in the year. The models include the (still codenamed) Kitty Hawk, Washington, Lil Wayne and Wayne. In terms of when, it looks like the Kitty Hawk, the Washington and Lil Wayne will arrive in March and then Wayne will come a bit later—in Q2. Other details include that the Kitty Hawk and the Washington are USB modems and with speeds of HSPA+21 and HSPA+42 respectively. Furthermore, the Lil Wayne and Wayne are MiFi style devices and will come sporting HSPA+21 and HSPA+42 speeds respectively. With that, we are left wondering the price points and something a little more specific in terms of release dates. Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google Latest data provided by Google is showing something that is bound to happen anytime in the near future - that is all Android phones should be running on Android 2.x. Right now, implementation of these versions of the Android OS is registered at a total of 89% of all Android phones released. This include Android phones running the latest Gingerbread or Android 2.3 which currently has a meager 0.8% share on all Android phones released so far. Looking closely into the historical distribution of Android OS, we see Android 2.1 being implemented to 31.4% of all Android phones, and Android 2.2 to 57.6%. Of course this historical distribution data will make sense if you are an Android app developers. From the historical graph you will see how many device will be compatible with your apps based on the platform version. One thing to note here is that if you are developing an app based on an earlier version of Android, it means that your app can run on newer versions of Android phone running the latest Android OS. This according to Google is because of the fact that all Android APIs are forward compatible. The price cut will be found with those shopping direct with Dell and as of now the M11x notebook is showing an estimated ship date of February 16th. Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Those looking for a bit more information on the Motorola Atrix 4G may want to check out the latest ‘Mobile Minute’ video from AT&T. The video comes in at 1 minute and 24 seconds and offers a decent, albeit brief look at the handset. Still, while short it manages to show off the handset and cover the specs as well the multimedia and laptop dock. All said and done, the Atrix 4G looks rather nice, and something that I learned from this video—the Atrix has a fingerprint scanner for security—how did I miss that before. Section: Apple, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Verizon Wireless is reporting that the company has just achieved a record-breaking online pre-orders for the iPhone 4. In fact, the sale was so good that Verizon has to stop accepting orders online after only two hours. This means that Verizon has sold more phones than any first day launch in the company’s history of first day launches. And since the online order was started as early as 3 a.m., it means that by 5 a.m., the Verizon iPhone 4 was already sold out. Now, that’s quite a remarkable achievement indeed. Verizon preside and CEO Dan Mead said that it was indeed an exciting day for Verizon and considers it a success story. “I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website. Overall, it was a very good day,” said Mr. Mead. It will be interesting to know then whether this success will trickle down next week as Verizon starts selling the iPhone 4 at all Verizon retail stores across America. The Verizon iPhone will be available at Verizon Wireless stores, Apple Stores, Best Buy and select Wal-Mart stores starting Feb. 10. Will this be as successful as the AT&T iPhone 4 sale, or perhaps more successful? Read [PR Newswire] Full Story » | Written by Arnold Zafra for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article »

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile And the commercial war is apparently heating up. Of course, things started out nice enough with the first commercial coming from Apple where both iPhones were playing nicely side by side. Well, truth be told the first from Verizon was also rather mild, it simply highlighted the wait and let everyone know that the iPhone was officially coming. Then, seemingly out of nowhere Verizon took aim and fired at AT&T with the “Yes. I can hear you now” commercial. With that, and probably as one would expect, AT&T has released their own commercial firing back at Verizon and it covers the age old simultaneous voice and data argument. I only say age old because its not original, and plus Verizon users already realize this. Not to mention—How often does someone actually need to do this? Personally I was an AT&T customer for years and now now been with Verizon for just over a year and cannot once remember wishing I had stayed with AT&T because of not being able to get data while on a voice call.
