HTC Inspire 4G drops to $59.99 with Amazon

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Web, Websites

HTC Inspire 4G from Amazon Wireless

The HTC Inspire 4G, which is currently on sale with AT&T for $99 on a two year contract, is being offered on Amazon Wireless for $59.99 for new subscribers and $69.99 for current AT&T customers.  While the price difference on Amazon Wireless is not as deep as we have seen with some past devices, it’s still a nice discount for anyone looking to pick up a very capable Android smartphone on AT&T.

Recently announced at CES 2011, the HTC Inspire features a 4.3 inch touch screen, 1GHz single core processor, 768MB of RAM, 4G connectivity, Android 2.2, 8MP rear facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 720p video capture, and 8GB of onboard memory.  The only feature missing, in my opinion, is a front facing camera, but the Inspire certainly has the specs to make up for it.

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

verizon pre 2

As announced a couple of days ago, the HP Pre 2 is now available for online purchase from Verizon Wireless. This officially seals the fact that there is now an officially available webOS 2.0-powered smartphone in the market. And just as we reported, HP Pre 2 will carry a price tag of $149.99 after a mail-in rebate and comes with a 2-year customer agreement with Verizon.

As a review, the Pre 2 sports a 3.1-inch glass multi-touch screen with 320x480 resolution, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 5 MP camera with LED Flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, support for Microsoft Exchange e-mail, VZ Navigator capable with audible turn-by-turn directions and millions of points of interest. The device is loaded with a 1GHz TI OMAP processor with 512 of RAM and has 3G mobile hotspot capability. Speaking 3G mobile hotspot, although the product order did not mention it, be sure to ask around if Verizon Wireless still offers free 3G Mobile Hotspot with their Palm smartphones. This will save you money when using one of the key features of the Pre 2 which is mobile hotspotting.

Lenovo ThinkPad X120e

Lenovo is releasing the new ThinkPad X120e ultra-thin business notebook on March 8 for $399. This notebook was actually announced in CES 2011 and it took this long for Lenovo to have it read for public consumption. The notebook also weighs in pretty lightly at 2.9 lbs. It will have a battery life of around 6.6 hours. It’s a pretty good notebook feature-wise but of course the deal-maker is the notebook’s price which is pretty low for a standard business notebook.

Back to the Future Ep 1 HD available now for the iPad

Section: Apple, Gaming, Games, Mobile, Portable

Back to the Future Ep 1 HD

I’m pretty sure that iPad users who grew up with the Back to the Future trilogy will be pleased with TellTale’s Back to the Future Ep 1 HD which has just been released as an iPad game. Yes Marty McFly fans, our favorite 80’s icon and some of the characters in the classic film just landed on the App Store and you can have the pleasure of playing Marty as he help Doc get out of trouble in this nicely done iPad game.

But before you jump for joy expecting that you can relive the story from the trilogy, take note that the storyline of this game takes place six months after Back to the Future III. Yes friends, this is a sort of continuation of the story which in my opinion is a better decision since it sorts of resurrect the Back to the Future franchise film. We’ve also heard that TellTale even commissioned the movie’s original co-writer, co-producer and co-creator Bob Gale to work on the game. So expect the game to be completely true to the original movie.

As for the gameplay, don’t expect too much action as well since the game is a touchscreen adventure wherein you’ll need to tap on a particular portion or objects in the game to proceed. Nonetheless, the game is still pretty interesting if only for the fact that it has many allusions to the movie.

Overall, Back to the Future Ep1 HDis a pretty solid iPad game. Worthy of the your $7? Well, it took this long for Back to the Future to hit any iOS device so it’s definitely worth the price.

Is Apple king or is Content king?

Section: Audio, Portable Audio, Video, Content, Portable Video, Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Apple’s announcement of new publishing rules for their iOS and 30% grab at subscriptions has caused many a ruffled feather.  Google responded with a policy change of their own, besting Apple by 20% - a 10% fee on content providers.  Apple is overplaying it’s hand.

If Apple had a strong hold on smartphones, a move like this might get grumbles but we suspect everyone would go along to get access to Apple’s customers.  If Apple was the only game in town, they’d live with having 30% grabbed from their pocket or we wouldn’t mind paying 30%-40% more for content.  Where else are you going to go?

But that isn’t the world we live in.  Android continues to steamroll up new users and their new 10% subscription grab sounds right to us.  Apple may have just pushed Google a bunch of users and content providers.

For some, like Amazon’s Kindle unit, 30% should be too much to bare.  Common thinking is there just isn’t enough margin in ebooks to accommodate Apple’s request.  Amazon has little choice: it must raise prices or exit iOS.  Losing money isn’t a viable, long-term option.  What will higher book prices do for Kindle’s core customers using a Kindle?  This isn’t going to sit real well with them.

Raise prices or exit iOS.  That seems a crappy outcome for iOS users, right?  Is this a play to drive out content salesman and leave iTunes as the only game in iOS-town?  It could be.  Would tomorrow’s iPhone buyers care that they can’t buy X book?  Can Apple do whatever it wants in it’s own sandbox without consequence?

We don’t think so.  How about you?

motorola chief sanjay jha outs google music service

Whoops.  According to an interview with Sanjay Jha, Motorola Mobility CEO, Google Music will be included in the next version of Android.  The interview focused on Motorola defending it’s higher-than-iPad price.  Jha mentioned the service to show how robust his tablet’s ecosystem will be.

“If you look at Google Mobile services [via Android] today, there’s a video service, there’s a music service – that is, there will be a music service.”

Google has been rumored to have a music service waiting in the wings for some time.  Jha indicated that the new music service will rely on Honeycomb, the latest Android version that the Xoom and a host of other Android tablets will run on.  It is expected Xoom and Honeycomb will launch at the same time.

Billboard magazine reported last week that music execs had been contacted by Google in regards to an online store and downloadable music.  Earlier reports on Google Music had included a cross platform design, allowing users of different devices to access the service.

iPhone 4 declared Best Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress

Section: Apple, Communications, Smartphones, Trade Shows

Apple iPhone 4

As we all should know by now, Apple didn’t have any real presence at Mobile World Congress. The show that saw the announcements of a few tablets and Facebook phones had no presence from Cupertino, as is the norm with industry-wide events. That didn’t stop the iPhone 4 from winning a pretty big award, however.

The iPhone 4 walked out of Mobile World Congress with the title of Best Mobile Device, despite never walking in. Now, the iPhone 4 didn’t compete against the phones announced at MWC, or even the fantastic phones announced at CES 2011. The competition for the iPhone 4 was the BlackBerry Torch, HTC Desire, LG Optimus 7 and Samsung’s Galaxy S. All are solid phones, though some might argue with the choice of the BlackBerry Torch.

Apple’s iPhone 4 won because of it’s Retina Display, design, and ecosystem for developers. The judges exclaimed that “n a tight race, the iPhone 4 builds on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smartphones." Given the merits of design, display and ecosystem the iPhone 4 shouldn’t have any problem winning the competition. Other manufacturers are just now creating displays that come close to the iPhone 4. I have also yet to see a design I like more, but that’s more subjective than anything else.

Motorola Droid X: Where there is an old version, a new version must be coming soon

Verizon has recently taken $50 off the price of the Droid X, which could imply that they want to sell as many as they can to make room for the Droid X2. Of course, that is mere speculation, but nothing says a new version is coming more than having the current version labeled as the old version. Yup, it seems Verizon has begun to list the currently available Droid X as the old version. With that, we have to wonder when the Droid X2 is going to be officially announced.

HTC Flyer appears on Amazon.de with a 699 Euro price tag

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

HTC Flyer

Just a few days after it was unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2011, HTC’s flagship Android tablet is already showing up at Amazon.de. And guess what, the product page already carries a price tag - 699 Euro or roughly translated to $950. But of course, that includes European VAT, so it would be safe to say that the HTC Flyer, once it hits the US market will most probably carry a price tag of $730. But, let’s not go into the US pricing yet and just wait for HTC to bring the HTC Flyer officially to the US later on.

Anyway, if you’re anywhere in Europe where Amazon.de delivers, you might want to pre-order the HTC Flyer now to get first dibs of this Android tablet. And in case you’ve missed our previous coverage, the HTC Flyer boasts of a nice HTC Sense re-engineered for the large screen real estate of the HTC Flyer. More details about the HTC Flyer here.
