Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile While we already knew the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play was headed to Verizon, it looks like that release is now one step closer to becoming a reality. Of course, we should clarify that a release date still has not been announced, however a handset sporting the model number of R800X has recently been spotted in the Verizon inventory system. With that, lets hope Verizon and/or Sony Ericsson offer something a bit more official in terms of a release date and price sooner rather than later because we are fairly certain that more than a few of you reading this are chomping at the bit to make a purchase. According to details coming from AT&T, those who managed to get their pre-order in before February 17th should receive their phone on February 21st—as in this coming Monday. Granted, that is only one day ahead of the general release, but hey, its still better than nothing. Plus you can at least rub it in your friends face for a few hours anyway. That said, it seems like shipping a pre-order a little early is something that wireless carriers should start doing on a regular basis—if nothing else it should help to encourage pre-orders. Well, it looks like that limited time has come to an end and the new and final pricing has been announced—$199.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate. “New pricing info for Galaxy S 4G: $199.99 after $50 MIR card, with qualifying plan on 2-year agreement.” Of course, as we have seen, other retailers such as Radio Shack have the device priced at $149.99 without any rebates to worry about. That said, if we were shopping for the Galaxy S 4G (which features a 4 inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz processor and Android 2.2 with a 5 megapixel camera on the back and a front facing camera for video chatting) we would be hitting up The Shack. Just saying. And for those who may have missed that little detail. The Xoom will be $799 unsubsidized from Verizon and $600 for the Wi-Fi only model. That said, there has been some chatter suggesting that Verizon may have approved an on-contract price of $599. In other words, would you be willing to sign a two-year agreement in order to save $200? I am thinking most would say yet to that. Of course, even at $599 this is not likely something that everyone is going to want to run out and get without some thought. Needless to say, the $599 on contract price is still a rumor at this point, but a rumor that we hope to see come true. Both are popular clients on their respective platforms, and today both were suspended from accessing Twitter. Twitter has suspended both apps from using the Twitter API for policy violations. Twitter apparently does this regularly, to the point of suspending hundreds of apps every day. Those apps typically have small user bases, much smaller than the two UberMedia apps. Twitter, in fact, only shared the information because of the number of users who use the apps. When the apps were suspended Twitter recommended that users use the official Twitter apps for their platforms. What Twitter didn’t say was what policies the UberMedia apps actually violated. Well, thanks to Quora and UberMedia CEO Bill Gross we now know. One of the violations has to do with user privacy. Both clients used tmi.me to allow for longer DMs, but Twitter didn’t like the fact that those DMs could be viewable by anyone on the website. A reasonable concern, and one that’s been fixed. The second was a worry of Twitter’s that UberMedia had some sort of affiliate program with the URL shortening in the apps. In response Ubermedia removed automatic link shorteners from both apps. The last has to do with UberTwitter’s name. So, UberMedia decided the app will now be called UberSocial so as to avoid any conflict. Gross claims that Twitter will reinstate both apps once the policy violations were fixed. That seems to have happened. As of this writing the apps aren’t yet working, but might be by the time you read this. At the time, it wasn’t known whether Verizon Wireless would be the exclusive carrier of this innovative smartphone, but Jan Uddenfeldt, Sony Ericsson CTO, offers a differing perspective. According to AndroidGuys, Uddenfeldt envisions the Xperia Play “ultimately [being] available on multiple carriers’ networks,” but did not announce any possible suitors or time frames. Samsung’s strategy of having the Galaxy S available on every major carrier in the U.S. definitely paid off, and it would make sense for Sony Ericsson to push to get the Xperia Play on as many carriers as possible. Back then, it was said that this tablet will be bundled with another Lenovo portable machine, the IdeaPad U1. After CES 2011, nothing has been about the announced hybrid machine anymore. But now, PC World learned that Lenovo is planning to make the LePad Tablet available worldwide sometime around June. This is after the tablet gets launched in China first this coming March. Whatever happened to hybrid idea? We really don’t know. Lenovo probably learned that it would be wiser to launch a separate tablet instead that can compete with other tablets announced recently. At least minus the IdeaPad U1 netbook, Lenovo will be able to release the LePad tablet at a competitive price of $399 and $499. As a review, the Lenovo LePad features a 10.1-inch screen display, Android 2.2 OS and 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. via [PC World] Full Story » | Written by Arnold Zafra for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » More Recent Articles |
