Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware We didn’t see this coming: Bloomberg claims the second generation iPad (or iPad 2 for shorthand) will be delayed until June. This schedule would bump into the annual release of the iPhone and I can’t believe Apple would want that. Bloomberg reports that recent changes are behind the delay. “Apple Inc.'s shipments of a new version of its iPad tablet computer may be delayed to June from April because of "production bottlenecks" at manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Yuanta Securities Co. said. The delay arose after Cupertino, California-based Apple made design changes before the Lunar New Year, according to a report by Vincent Chen and Alison Chen, analysts at Yuanta.” Could Apple still be tweaking the iPad based on peek-shows the competition like Motorola’s Xoom or HP’s TouchPad? Our take on this is, “hogwash.” Apple rarely misses dates, and being late to the party that drives 39% of last years revenue (Bloomberg numbers), doesn’t sound like Apple to us. Inspired by everyday ink-jet printing technology, scientists have discovered a way to help burn victims and soldiers replace damaged skin. The first skin-substitution technique involves a portable printer that can scan an injury, extract cells from the victim and print replacement skin. Another technique uses a 3D printer which combines the victim’s cells with a special gel and other materials in order to create cartilage. The technology is capable of measuring the depth of damage via scanner which then informs the bio-printer as to how many cells/layers need to be created. “Just imagine—if you could take cells from a donor, culture them, put them into an ink and recreate an implant that is alive and made of the original cells from the donor—how useful that would be in terms of avoiding rejection,” said Hod Lipson of Cornell University. We are talking about skin regeneration via printer here, ladies and gentlemen. The skin-printing technology has already been used on animal test subjects prior to human testing (just like everything else) and has turned out with some good results for mice and pigs. Unfortunately, there are still several kinks that the scientists need to work out. One of the many difficulties they face will face will be finding a means to attach the fake skin to the individual. Furthermore, only cells that can withstand being printed are currently capable of being printed. Bummer. Give it a few years; We’ll be able to recreate anything in due time. Granted, we were fairly surprised ourselves, but on the positive side, it looks like that support will be coming sooner rather than later. These latest details are coming by way of the official Adobe Blog where they have stated that they “will offer Flash Player 10.2 pre-installed on some tablets and as an OTA download on others within a few weeks of Android 3 (Honeycomb) devices becoming available, the first of which is expected to be the Motorola Xoom.” So there you have it, Flash will be available in a few weeks, that is, unless there is a delay but we will keep our fingers crossed that does not happen. According to a leaked internal screen shot, T-Mobile may extend its current Even More Plus unlimited data plan, which currently sits at 5GB of data per month before T-Mobile reserves the right to throttle your data speed. The extension would either remove the soft cap of 5GB completely, or make it a higher increment and still throttle the speeds. The screen shot says this new data plan will launch sometime this year, but we have yet to hear anything official from T-Mobile regarding this information. While Sprint theoretically could launch another Android smartphone, but my guess is they will be announcing a Windows Phone 7 smartphone. Especially considering the Kyocera Echo was just announced recently, and it is time for the CDMA version of WP7 to be available, it makes sense Sprint will possibly introduce the HTC 7 Pro rumored for Sprint. Given that, it’s a bit strange that the company is constantly comparing itself to the iPad in commercials. In the latest Kindle commercial, Amazon again hits the iPad for the fact that it’s glass screen produces glare while the Kindle’s e-ink display doesn’t. The iPad is only on screen for a few seconds, but two of the five features shown on screen are direct hits at the iPad, saying the Kindle has no glare and is “easy to read in direct sunlight.” The other few points are the 800,000 available books, lightweight and month-long battery life. Some part of each can be shots at Apple, or any other company with an eBook reader.
