Windows Phone 7 Connector

Much as I don’t like the idea of a Mac users having a Windows Phone 7 for a primary phone, well I can’t help it. It’s your choice. It’s like me having an iPhone and an Android phone at the same time. Anyway, if you’re one of those people I’m referring to, here’s something for you courtesy of Microsoft - the Windows Phone 7 Connector.

As its name suggests, Windows Phone 7 connector offers a simple, easy-to-use application designed to sync your favorite media files from your Mac, with your Windows Phone 7 or even with your Microsoft Zune HD. The application allows you to sync photos and videos you’ve captured using your Windows Phone 7 device and also lets you update your Windows Phone 7 software.

Other things which Windows Phone 7 connector allows you to do include - retrieve photos and videos and automatically import them into your iPhoto library, browse and preview media files on your Windows Phone 7 devices, download and install OS updates. Take note, this application only supports unprotected (non DRM) files so you won’t be able to transfer files you’ve purchased via iTunes.

Windows Phone 7 Connector is available now from the Mac App Store for free.

Motorola Xoom to be sold for $600 and $799 with no contract

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

Motorola Xoom prices

For those of you who are eyeing the Motorola Xoom (including yours truly) and are wondering how much the said Android tablet will really go in the market, well Motorola has confirmed official pricing of the Xoom tablet. But first, let it be known that there will be two models of the Xoom tablet to be released by Verizon - a WiFi only version and a WiFi plus 3G. The WiFi only version will be get the official price tag of $600 and the WiFi plus 3G will get a hefty $799. Both are unsubsidized and with no contract obligation.

Obviously, Motorola is following Apple’s strategy of giving users to options of getting the Motorola Xoom. In fact, Motorola’s chief executive Sanjay Jha even mentioned Apple when confirming their official pricing for the Motorola Xoom. “Competing with Apple you have to deliver premium products,” said Mr. Jha who also emphasized that the Xoom’s operating system is also upgradeable. Meaning, users will not be stucked with the same Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS forever. But this is of course will depend on the rate of update that the Google developers will be doing for Honeycomb.

We want to ask you then our dear readers. Will those two price points of the Motorola Xoom make you buy any of the two models of the Motorola Xoom? Are the specs and features of the Motorola Xoom enough to make you spend such an amount?

Camera+ app for iPhone updated, now at version 2.1 with new features, improvements & bug fixes

Camera+ app for iPhone updated, now at version 2.1 with new features, improvements & bug fixes

Those who like to use their iPhone for taking pictures and feeling the need for something a bit more powerful than the default camera app have likely heard of the Camera+ app. And just as an FYI, the app is currently on sale for $0.99 so now may be a good time to buy if you have not already. Anyway, aside from the app being on sale it was also recently updated to version 2.1 and with that comes a rather long list of features, improvements and bug fixes. In short, the already good app has gotten even better.

1. PERFORMANCE!! Many areas of the app have been significantly optimized, especially effects processing. You'll see vast improvements when trying out the different effects/borders and when saving/sharing photos that have effects applied.
2. MOAR CAMERA BUTTON!! We've added several more instances of the camera button so that you can instantly get to shooting from almost anywhere in the app.
3. We've changed the icon for multi-select so that it's at least 473% more understandable. Yes, it's inconsistent with what Apple does in the Photos app, but it actually makes sense now. You're welcome.
4. You can now choose the order which your photos will be shared.
5. We've added options so that you can have your photos automatically saved to your Camera Roll as you shoot them.
6. The usability of the Info panel has been substantially improved and is now much more consistent with the rest of the Lightbox (ok, ok… we moved a couple of buttons, but we promise that you'll quickly adjust to the new layout and you'll like it much better before long).
7. You can now get info on photos from the Lightbox without having to zoom them first.
8. We added a menu option to turn geotagging on and off.
9. You can now tap-and-hold most buttons to display an associated action sheet with additional options.
10. The Copy button has been removed from the zoomed photo toolbar and has been replaced as a tap-and-hold popup.
11. We fixed a bug where photo previews were incorrect when an effect on them was set to a level less than 100%.
12. Location services are now only active when you're in the camera view, saving precious battery life (thanks, jL Fotography).
13. Geotags and metadata are now retained when emailing photos.
14. The Pinhole effect has been dramatically improved.
15. We've improved the quality of several of the effects.
16. Vintage, Offset, Film, and Sprockets borders have been improved.
17. Most of the analog-style effects have more of a random feel to them now.
18. We fixed a bug where some people were having trouble sharing their photos on TheFaceBook.

Verizon CTO feels they don't need WP7 & their "three OS players" are Android, Apple and RIM

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon CTO Tony Melone was recently interviewed and one of the topics that came up was mobile operating systems and surprisingly he was rather blunt when it came time to speak about Windows Phone 7. According to Malone;

“I do want a strong third OS out there,” Melone said. “It gives the carriers more flexibility and balances the interests of all the parties. But I still have doubts whether Microsoft will get the traction they are hoping for with Windows Phone 7.”

Further stating that he does not “think Verizon needs the Nokia and Microsoft relationship” and that the three current mobile OS players for Verizon include Android, Apple, and RIM. “

Of course, he was quick to point out that another company and operating system breaking into that top three was not out of the question, however it would have to be “really good.”

And in some lighter news, Verizon still has a Windows Phone 7 handset coming, which is expected to arrive sometime this Spring.

Rumor: Sprint to launch the Windows Phone 7 powered HTC 7 Pro next month

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

While the official timeframe for Sprint to release the HTC 7 Pro is sometime in the first half of 2011, it looks like that has been narrowed down to the first two weeks in March. Of course, we should point out that this has not been officially confirmed by Sprint, but instead comes by way of Rafael Rivera of CheveronWP7 fame. Anyway, according to Rafael, the HTC 7 Pro is coming to Sprint “in the first two weeks of March” and it will arrive with the Windows Phone 7 update in place.

Verizon lowers Droid X pricing by $50, now down to $149.99 with two-year agreement

As if we needed anymore reason to speculate, Verizon has lowered the price of the Droid X and that sort of makes it look like a Droid X2 is getting closer to a launch. But before we get ahead of ourselves, the Droid X is still a more than capable handset with its 4.3 inch display, 1GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera and Android 2.2. And at this point it seems that much nicer with its new price tag $149.99 on a two-year agreement.

HTC Facebook phones are heading to AT&T

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

HTC Facebook phones

Earlier today HTC announced the Cha Cha and Salsa, it’s first two Facebook phones, Android phones with dedicated Facebook buttons. Now we know at least one US carrier that will carry some version of those phones, if not exactly the Cha Cha and Salsa.

AT&T has announced that later this year it will be bringing HTC Facebook phones to the US. No release date or price on the phones, but it will be part of AT&T renewed ambition to get as many Android phones out as possible. HTC might not have the Cha Cha and Salsa, but there will be some Android-based Facebook phones. Don’t be too surprised if AT&T slaps 4G on the end of the name of each phone, despite the lack of real 4G.

Amazon adds real page numbers and more features to Kindle for iOS app

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Kindle for iOS app

Are you using Amazon’s Kindle app instead of iBooks for your e-book reading fix? Then you might want to check out the update queue on your iOS device right now to get the updated version of Kindle for iOS. The new version has just added “real page numbers” that matches the page numbers in the printed copies of the e-books. This allows you to easily reference and cite passages and read alongside others, say in a book club or class.

Aside from real page numbers, the updated Kindle for iOS also brings in Public Notes, a feature which let you make your book notes and highlights publicly available for others to see. This is an opt-in feature and a new way for readers to share knowledge and insights about a particular e-book that you are currently reading. Another new feature is the facility for rating the e-book that you are reading when you reach the end of the book or for sharing a message about the book on your social network as well as get personalize recommendations on what you can read next. Finally, the updated Kindle for iOS app has also introduced a new and improved newspaper and magazine layout.

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G coming soon teaser page goes live

It looks like T-Mobile has moved one step closer to launching the Sidekick 4G, and while there is still not a firm release date available, there is now the coming soon style teaser page. Of course, this may not be quite as exciting as those leaked images we saw a little while back, but at the same time, it seems like a step forward and hopefully T-Mobile will offer the complete picture including price and release date sooner rather than later.
