Run your phone off your bike

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Gadgets / Other, Transportation

Nokia DC-14 bicycle charger keeps your mobile charged up on the goBack in the olden days, bicycle lights were powered by the tire rolling against an arm.  Today, companies like Nokia are taking a serious look at how users can repower their cell phone batteries.  The results could have serious implications for those not near power sources or those just looking to use less power.

Nokia has entered this market with its DC-14, which is available now and sells for about $34.  According to Nokia, a mere 8 mph will equate what a wall charger can output to your phone.  8 mph should be easy for even casual cyclists to hit.

The Nokia unit appears to work just as the olden ones: a “bottle” makes contact with the tire which spins a head and is converted to electricity.  The unit, says Nokia, is impervious to dirt and water.  Simple is sometimes best.  The unit is said to fit the latest Nokia devices; any that have a 2mm pin style connector.

For us in the US, Biologic an arm of the folding bicycle powerhouse, Dahon,  has a charger for the iPhone or other USB cable compatible device.  The only catch here is the unit requires a dynamo hub to capture the power of the spinning wheel.  Not as universal as the Nokia offering but an option for some.  Check out the Biologic charger here.

Telus to offer phone unlocking service on February 15

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Telus logo As part of a series of initiatives to improve customer experience, Telus will start providing “unlocking” service to most SIM-based devices starting February 15. The service will be available for Telus postpaid customers and will grant Telus customers with more flexibility and freedom in using their mobile phones.

According to David Fuller, Telus Chief Marketing Officer, the decision to offer unlocking service was in response to customers requests to have freedom and flexibility in using their devices as they wish.

“It’s all part of our commitment to continue to drive flexibility, simplicity and transparency within our offerings. Over the last few years, we’ve eliminated system access and carrier 911 fees, designed simpler family plans, created proactive alerts that notify customers going over their data allotments, and created options for our customers to upgrade to a new device faster. Helping our customers to unlock their device is just one more step in this overall service evolution,” said Mr. Fuller.

Under the new service customers who are subscribed to a monthly postpaid plan from Telus and are using active and eligible SIM-based phones can have their phones unlocked. Unlocking fee will be $50.

Archos 70c Android powered color eReader now available for pre-order in the US We saw the Archos 70 ereader in an FCC filing back in early December of last year and then later that month it came available for purchase in Europe. Well, flash forward till today and we now have pre-order availability here in the US. Of course, there is a slight difference in the model we are looking at. The US listing is the Archos 70c as opposed to the European 70b. That said, the Archos 70c ereader can pre pre-ordered by way of JR.com for $149.99. So far nothing was given in terms of when the Archos reader will actual arrive, aside from the general sounding “coming soon.” Otherwise, in terms of features, the Archos 70c has a 7 inch TFT color display, Wi-Fi, SD card slot, 4GB internal storage, speakers, headphone jack and a battery that is said to be able to offer up to 10 hour of reading time. T-Mobile offering all smartphones for free this Friday and Saturday

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

T-Mobile Valentine's Day

Out of the big four US carriers T-Mobile is known to have the biggest discounts on phones through promotions. None of the promotions are as great as the upcoming Valentine’s Day promotion. Well, it’s called the Valentine’s Day promotion, but it really happens on February 11 and 12.

This Friday and Saturday all smartphones in T-Mobile stores will be free. So if you’ve been wanting an HD7, G2, Vibrant or myTouch 4G, this weekend is the time to get it. The promotion may require a mail-in rebate for the phone to actually be free, but in the end you’ll still come out paying nothing aside from the monthly fee on the two-year contract. Not a bad price at all for a new Android or Windows Phone 7 smartphone. Those who are already T-Mobile subscribers can still take advantage of the deal if they are eligible for an upgrade.

With the sale starting on Friday, T-Mobile might be trying to lure in those who aren’t able to get ahold of the Verizon iPhone on Thursday. It could just be a coincidence, but given the hype for the Verizon iPhone, it’s hard to believe T-Mobile’s offer to give away phones along with two-year contracts is just pure happenstance.

Motorola Xoom Android tablet spotted on Best Buy advertisement

Assuming we can believe the details coming from this Best Buy sales flyer, then it looks like the Motorola Xoom tablet is going to launch February 24th and come sporting a $799.99 price tag. Of course, while expensive sounding, this does fit in with previous leaks and rumors in terms of the pricing. Furthermore, the flyer also covers the data pricing, which will be available by way of Verizon Wireless. And for those who may have forgotten the specs, the Motorola Xoom has a 10.1 inch HD widescreen display, 1GB RAM, a “desktop-like” tabbed browser with support for Flash, 2MP camera on the front, 5MP camera on the back and perhaps most important—3G that will be upgradeable to 4G LTE when it comes available. Otherwise, the data pricing is the same as we saw for the Galaxy Tab and begins at $20 per month for 1GB of data.

Apple to announce the iPhone 5 on June 6th

Section: Apple, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Trade Shows, WWDC

San Francisco's Moscone Center Calendar of events

Other than iPad 2 rumors, the other big rumor surrounding Apple involves the next generation iPhone.  Since the iPhone 4 is currently available on two carriers, more people than usual will be interested in the iPhone 5 (or whatever the name may be), and if Apple can deliver another stellar product, they will likely make more money from exposure to more customers.  According to the San Francisco's Moscone Center online corporate calendar, there seems to be a “Corporate Meeting” scheduled for June 5-9 2011 when Apple’s WWDC is likely to take place and Apple will probably take this time to announce the new iPhone as it did last year.  Of course, this information hasn’t been confirmed by Apple, but traditionally June is when the iPhone refresh occurs and Apple announced the product during the same time frame last year in the same location.

Super Bowl Commercial: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Gadgetell Hands On: Verizon iPhone 4

It looks like our 3AM ordering time has paid off in the form of a Verizon branded iPhone 4 that has arrived a full three days ahead of the general release. Yup, our friendly and faithful FedEx delivery driver has just stopped by and dropped our iPhone off and while the phone itself is pretty much the same as what we have seen with AT&T, it is nice to see one with the Verizon logo on the back of the box. That said, we are going to go and begin our first iTunes sync and start adding apps.

Canon unleashes the new Rebel T3 and T3i DSLR cameras

Section: Imaging, Digital Cameras

Canon Rebel T3i

Look what we have here - Canon has announced two new DSLR camera bearing the Rebel T3 and Rebel T3i branding. Judging by the announced specs and features of these two new camers, it looks like the Rebel T3 is an entry-level DLSR while the Rebel T3i is a step-up version of this shooter. In fact, the Rebel T3’s kit lens which is the old and trusted EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II zoom is an indication that this camera is geared more for photography enthusiasts who want to progress from point and shoot to DSLR.  While the Rebel T3i with its almighty 18MP CMOS Sensor is an indication that this new DSLR is geared for the more advanced user.

Let’s see now. The Canon Rebel T3 aside from having the 18-55mm kit lens also features a 12.2MP CMOS Sensor, nine-point autofocus system, 63-zone dual-layer metering system, DIGIC 4 imaging processor, full HD video capture, and high ISO range of 100 to 6,400. Unfortunately, Canon is not playing generous this time when it comes to providing external storage for your photos. Meaning, the DSLR does not come with an SD, SDHC or SDXC card. So, it’s up to you to get your storage card. The Canon Rebel T3 is scheduled to be released end of March with an SRP of $599.99.

Canon Rebel T3

Looking now at the Canon Rebel T3i, as mentioned it has 18MP CMOS sensor plus some other nice features including DIGIC 4 imaging processor, integrated Speedlite settings, tilt/swivel monitor, and high ISO range of 100 to 6,400. The Canon Rebel T3i debuts in March for $799.99 if you decide to get body only, or $899.99 if you opt to have it shipped with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II zoom lens.

So, are you getting any of these two new Canon DSLRs? Which one would you most likely get?

Samsung Galaxy S 4G tipped for release with Walmart

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Samsung Galaxy S 4G

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G, the successor to the original Samsung Vibrant, was announced several days ago by T-Mobile.  However, at the time, pricing wasn’t announced, and the availability date only mentioned a February launch.  Today, we are closer to figuring out the price of the device as a leaked slide from Wal-Mart claims it will launch for $148.88 on a two year contract.  Given the fact that $150 is pretty much the norm for new, single-core smartphones (just look at the HTC EVO Shift 4G), it is not surprising to see Wal-Mart list the Galaxy S 4G for this price.

Hopefully we will find out more concrete information regarding pricing and availability in the near future.

White iPhone 4 gets a shelf tag at one Best Buy in Houston

While this far from the end all be all proof that a white iPhone is going to be released soon, it does lead one to wonder. According to the details that came along with the image, the Best Buy location in Houston has set aside some shelf space for the “AT&T iPhone 4 16GB Whit” and as you can see, they have it priced at $599.99. Time will tell on this one, but I can almost sense those still holding out for the white iPhone 4 getting excited. And before anyone whips out their phone in an effort to scan the QR code in the above image—it does not go anywhere, we already tried.

Verizon iPhone makes its way into customers hands, by way of delivery center pickup

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

While many are awaiting the UPS or FedEx driver to arrive at the house sometime before 3PM today, it looks like one not so patient user went directly to the source of the delivery—the distribution center. Anyway, based on the video, it looks like YouTube user billa9668 has managed to get his Verizon iPhone 4 out of the distribution center and in turn managed to (at present) gain 50,000 views on his more than annoying to watch opening video. And no, its not annoying because he got his before me, but because the ‘shots’ are super blurry, the box is whited out and the person filming keeps feeling the need to turn the camera on its side.
