Will iPad cost $399 after holidays?

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops, Netbooks, Wireless

Apple has pitched the iPad as in between unit - right between the iPhone and a Mac.  That leaves the door open to what kind of commercial strategy lies ahead for the iPad.  The way I see it, we have a pretty good shot at seeing a $399 iPad by April.

If the iPad follows the iPhone model, we’ll see the original model take a back seat, lower priced role while iPad 2 is rolled out.  This helps clear inventory and can even help sales by reaching down into lower price points.  For example, users can pick up a $49 iPhone with little effort from AT&T.  This helps users get hooked on the product and hit with monthly fees that make the $50-$100 discount look pretty silly.

According to this story, Apple and their iPad supplier Foxconn are pumping out 10,000 iPads a day.  We’ll see some overlap of product production just before the new iPad is announced (we expect to see that in January or by March at the latest).  We expect the second generation to be the usual Apple upsell: thinner, added features (retina display, cameras, faster processor).  That leaves a welcome whole for a lesser product (iPad 1) at a lower price.

Why $399?  Simple, competitors are knocking at the door with $400 on contract.  A larger iPad with no contract (WiFi only) for the same price as a 7” Android with $20 a month contract looks like an absurd comparison (assuming you are not an Android or Apple rabid fanboi).  And indeed, Apple loves to make those kind of choices simple for us.  Apple can feed off the lower-priced market with the first generation while keeping those on the edge paying top dollar and reaping higher margins.

Is the tablet market, like computers a race to zero?  Or will faster refreshes keep price points up higher, like smartphones in the US costing $199?  It remains to be seen but I suspect Apple will strive to keep the prices high while showing solid value to consumers.

With a years production under their belt complete with reliable consumer demand data, Apple can easily squeeze $100 off the retail on an older product.

Opinion: Why Netflix will lose $2 per month from me

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV, Portable Video, Video Providers, Features

Yesterday, Netflix announced a brand new streaming only plan as well as a $1 price increase on the lowest plan to get streaming plus DVDs by mail.  The price changes will take effect on billing statements dated after Jan. 2, 2011.  Within the hour Netflix made this announcement, I had lowered my plan.

Streaming has become well over 90% of my Netflix usage.  I use it, my kids use it, heck - even my wife knows how to use it.  Thanks to streaming Netflix, I breezed through all 3 seasons of Arrested Development in less than a week (what a find!).  My movie watching behavior changed and I am consuming more content.

I can’t even tell you what is in my DVD queue at the moment.  I cannot curate it, it takes too much coordination of release dates to keep me interested.  That is where streaming reigns supreme: instant gratification.

Is the DVD dead?  Not yet, I figure I’ll compliment streaming with Redbox $1 movie rentals when I feel the need to see something newer; again instant gratification.  That’s two movies a month to break even.

So for me, this was an easy call.  How about you?  Will the $1 price hike get you change?  Are DVDs still part of your movie-watching experience?  Let us know.

Gadgetell review: Motorola Defy for T-Mobile

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile, Features

Motorola Defy review

Rugged meets smart.  It’s a classic combo that gets butts in theater seats but can it work for a phone?  We took a long hard look at the Motorola Defy from T-Mobile to answer this question.  The result?  Yes, but go in with eyes open.

Rugged
The outside of the phone is coated with a grippy plastic that feels good in my hands.  It’s clear by the contrasting color and screws that this device is meant to be handled roughly, or in common language, like most people handle their phones.  Motorola says this phone can take a dunk, take a whole bunch of dirt (or pocket lint) and keeping going strong.  Little rubber plugs are intended to keep the charging port and headphone port save from dust/water intrusion.

In size, the screen is longer than an iPhones while the Defy is shorter.  Motorola has done a great job of shrinking the device down without getting too bloated.  The Defy is thicker than the iPhone but it feels great in hand thanks to the beveled edges along the backside.

The screen comes almost to the side of the device and even almost to the top and bottom.  I’ve been waiting for an edge-to-edge screen without a bezel and this is as close as I’ve seen.  It’s a great looking phone in my opinion. The 854 x 480 display is the same size as Motorola’s other Androids like the Droid 2.

Smart
The Defy runs Android 2.1 complete with MOTOBLUR.  My thoughts on this set up is rather simple: it works OK.  The customization is there, allowing users to add widgets wherever they please and the widgets work well.  Functionally, it’s a very simple way to get users to use widgets without demand more technical knowledge.  In short, it works well for the masses.

The Defy features an 800MHz chip instead of the 1GHz like the Droids get.  The camera is a 5 megapixel snapper.  Both of these features are good, just not great.  The camera can do video at 640 x 480 resolution and 30fps.  Video was smooth and the camera seems suited best for bright light situations.  It’s a decent package, good enough but not state-of the art.

I had no issues with the software.  Navigation worked very well, thanks Google!  T-Mobile service isn’t well served where I live and despite that, it wasn’t the slowest web browsing I’ve ever had.  Loading maps seemed to take a bit extra but on the average, it was impressive.

Trouble
Where I ran into trouble with this (and honestly, every Android phone I’ve used) is using an iPhone to compare it to.  I find the scrolling lagging, which drives me insane.  Typing on this was troublesome unless I used Swype, which is interesting but not intuitive for me.  I suspect users not coming from an iPhone would never notice these little things that bugged me.

I also found the battery knocked around in it’s compartment.  This is easily fixed with some tissue paper or some filler - but it shouldn’t be that way.  T-Mobile is getting back to me on if this was just an issue on my sample unit or not (I note other reviewers of this phone didn’t notice this issue - so it’s probably just my unit).  Little things like this bug me.

Summary
And that is really the thing about this phone, it’s an all-round good player.  That is its strong suit - doing everything well.  If living on the bleeding edge of tech sounds silly to you, then this is the Android phone you’ve been waiting for.  Great size, good in hand and does everything super-phones do without the bulk, complications or pricetag that goes along with doing them all great.

Overall, I liked this phone.  This would be a great first smartphone.  It’s got the bells and whistles - just not the loudest.

Dell offers up unlocked Dell Streak with Android 2.2 for $579

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Netbooks

Dell Streak Cherry Red

If you’ve been eyeing the Dell Streak Android tablet but doesn’t want to get tied up to carrier contracts, here’s your chance to finally own this cool Android tablet in its unlock iteration. Dell is offering the Android Streak unlocked, ready to be used with any SIM for $579. In addition, you can grab one of these Dell tablet in its new Cherry red design from Dell.com.

Of course, since most of us are not keen on owning a tablet device in sparkling Cherry red, you can still grab the white model which has been available exclusively from Best Buy.  Both cherry red and pure white Dell Streaks are still running Android 1.6 if you grab them right now. But Dell promises to release an OTA update that will bring the tablets’ OS to Android 2.2. Said OTA update will be issued is two phases. First phase is being rolled out to customers who purchased unlocked Dell Streaks outside the United States, while the second phase will be carried out to SIM-locked Dell Streaks purchased from participating mobile carriers. Dell is still getting technical approval from carriers to roll out the Android 2.2 upgrade and this will most probably happen by December.

Additionally, Dell is also offering the Streak with 32GB microSD card for both Cherry Red and Carbon Black models. This comes with additional cost of $99.

So, who’s getting the Dell Streak?

Asus Eee Note EA800 tablet gets the official treatment

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Laptops, Netbooks, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Asus Eee Note

Finally, Asus has found an official name for its tablet PC which was previously known as Eee Tablet. Starting today, the said tablet will now be officially called Eee Note EA800. Asus has also put up an official product page for the Eee Note, so we can pretty much assume that release date is already imminent. As to when it will be released, it will most likely happen right after CES 2011 where the Eee Note will be formally launch.

When it comes to specs and features though, there’s nothing really new from what we have always known about this Asus tablet. The Eee Note will have a 8-inch XGA ( 768x1024) 64 grayscale display, anti-glare touch screen, Wi-Fi, 4GB storage, microSD card slot, 2MP camera, and 3700mAh battery which can max out 13.5 hours of reading when wireless is off or 10 hours when wireless is on.

No pricing details are available yet. But as we said, release date is most probably sometime after the CES 2011.

Acer officially joins the tablet party, intros 2 Android tablets with no name

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Laptops, Netbooks

Acer Android tablet

Forget about branding and let’s announce that we’re also into this thing. That seems to be Acer’s motto right now as it hurries up in announcing that they, too, are coming up with a tablet device. In fact, Acer is working on two Android tablets - one will have a 7-inch display while the other one will be a 10-incher. Unfortunately, due to Acer’s excitement to let the world know about these two Android tablets, they forgot to give it a name.

So for now, let’s be contend to call these tablets as Acer Tablets. And what does Acer has to offer to the gradually expanding tablet market? Well, judging from what we can read from the official PR, it seems that these two tablets are being geared to become your portable multimedia consumption machine. Sounds familiar? For instance, the 10-inch Acer Android tablet will have capacitive touch screen feature with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity features and sport an aluminum casing enclosing a 13.3mm thick body. Said Android tablet will also have a high resolution, high color contrast display - perfect for consuming HD video both on its screen or on your TV via HDMI port. Acer also highlights the fact that this Android tablet will be able to run and play premium HD arcade games as well as complex online 3D games aided by its point multitouch and gyro meter control.

Going now to the 7-inch Android tablet, it seems that this one is being geared more for social web browsing aside from its multimedia playback capability. It will also have a full touch screen where you can enjoy playing games, viewing photos and videos. But what’s important to note here is that this tablet will keep you connected with your friends via email or social networks. In fact, it has a front-facing HD camera for video chat. Said tablet will feature a dual core processor and will support Adobe Flash Player 10.1.

Availability for these two Acer Android tablets will be sometime around April 2011. It’s not really clear yet whether these two Android tablets will already be running Android 2.3 or Gingerbread since it will be available by April 2011. If not, they will certainly be running on Android 2.2.

So are we excited or what?

Gadgetell review: cases for folks that despise cases

Section: Communications, Accessories, Smartphones, Mobile

When it comes to my phones, I rarely leave a case on for more than a week.  I despise, and to a point, resent the added weight, thickness and altered feel of the case.  Today, I’ll look at two solutions that make the Apple bumper look like the before shot on a weight loss programs brochures.

plant-based plastic cover for iPhone 4 is slimmest I've seen

From plants?

The first is a plastic case that isn’t.  While it looks and feels like plastic, it’s made of plants.  The Bioserie case is ridiculously thin.  We’re talking aging supermodel that has been on some narcotic for years thin.  The company says it is the worlds only bioplastic case made from plants.

Available in fun colors, the case has four little gripper arms that protect the corners and come up and over onto the front of the iPhone 4.  The entire back of the device is protected, all buttons are exposed as well as the dock connector.  There is nothing to get in the way of the phone’s tactile experience.  To me, that’s a big deal.

My usage notes are surprising, I love this thing.  The trick with this case is the plant-plastic does not cover the entire side of the phone - leaving the upper last 1/4 exposed so users can feel the device.  The result is a case that feels less bulky than others.  It sounds weird but compared to say bumper or even a Spec case, the Bioserie is fantastically thin.

There was not a dock or holder (like in my car) that the phone+case didn’t fit into.  It’s that slim a solution.

$34.95 from Bioserie

upgrade your iphone 4 with metal

From mines?

Another option for folks that hate the bulk of cases is to replace the back glass of the iPhone 4 with a metal one.  I found one from a Hong Kong parts supplier and for $13.99, I was in business.  With just two screws removed from the bottom of the phone, the back was off and the new one on.

The beveled edges of this backing was great.  The new backing smoothed out the corners a bit and made the phone feel better in the hand.  The brushed metal looked fantastic.  It made my iPhone easier to find at parties where we all seem to have the same phone and go through the task of turning them on to see who’s is who’s.  Maybe I need new Android-based friends…

Overall, the metal back is cool, if not treading on some legally dubious grounds (an Apple logo and identical printed info were used in what I would assume would be unlicensed use).  The look and feel were first rate.  If I had to pick on something, it would be the plastic that the screws screw into to keep the back in place.  Apple looks to use metal for the glass back and while I didn’t notice any problem with this, changing back and forth or time might make plastic a less than ideal solution.

The company has expanded it’s offering to include metal colors, designs, and even textures - all at very low prices.

$13.99 Cnn.cn

Summary
While I really liked both options, I found the Bioserie case to do a bit more for me.  An easy call, right?  The metal back only protects, well, the back.  Not so fast.

The metal back built on the experience without getting in the way.  By it’s very nature a case that protects even a little bit, gets in the way.  However, I found the Bioserie case to do enough protecting, kept my sweaty hands away from interfering with the phone’s antennae and looks good.  The fact that it’s made of plants makes me feel just a little bit better.

If you’ve got a loved one that hates cases, these two options are the best I’ve found so far.

Gadgetell Hands On: Archos 32 Internet Tablet

Personally, I have been checking out these new Archos devices since we first started seeing leaks several months back. Given that, and given I was able to find one in stock I finally broke down and pulled the trigger on the Archos 32, though in truth I wanted and will likely still purchase the Archos 43. That said, given I am still looking for a new model must say that I like the one I have just fine. Still, I don’t want to offer this post as a full review, but more of a first thoughts given I have not had it long enough to find out about some of the important things like battery life. Needless to say, my opinion on getting an Archos 43 could still change but at least for now it looks good. Anyway, while Archos is billing this as an “Internet Tablet” it is clearly a PMP, portable media player. I am sorry, but a 3.2 inch display is just not a tablet. Otherwise, first thoughts are good, though truth be told that Android Market hack is weighing heavily on my judgment. Bottom line (for now), this is a relatively inexpensive ($150) media player that seems to do what it is intended to do well.

Voice calling now available for the AT&T, Rogers & Bell Samsung Galaxy Tab

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

If you happen to be hoping to make voice calls on your AT&T, Rogers or Bell branded Galaxy Tab you may be in luck. Well, you are in luck assuming you are willing to use some custom firmware and trickery. The support has arrived courtesy of an xda developers forums user and the links are available by way of the ‘read’ link at the bottom of this post. In addition, there are some directions available, however as with anything of this sort—take caution and make sure you know what you are doing before you proceed. The one bit of requirement comes in the form of a SIM card with a voice and data plan because the SIM card that comes with your Galaxy Tab will not work. Otherwise, have at it, and may we suggest—use a Bluetooth headset so you do not look like a complete dork with a 7 inch tablet held up to your head. Wow, this may be the first time we have ever suggested wearing a Bluetooth headset to avoid looking like a dork.

Gadgetell Review: Aligata leather case for the iPad

Section: Apple, Computers, Mobile Computers, Reviews, Features, Originals

Gadgetell Review Aligata leather case for the iPad

What is being reviewed?

Up for review (and a mighty overdue review at that) is the Nude Beauty, and while that name alone may sound a little risque, this is simply a case for the iPad. The case comes courtesy of Aligata and retails for $79.90. That said, the disclaimer, Aligata provided the case to us for review, however as always with a review—the opinions are all ours.

The specs

While the specs sounds like a strange way to go into an iPad case review, in this instance it almost applies. Well, maybe not specs, but the material that it is made from, which is handmade of natural grain bovine leather. Furthermore, the Aligata iPad case is noted as not using any dyes, colors or chemicals to achieve an “un-fooled-around with leather in it’s most natural state of beauty and uniqueness.”

My thoughts

Overall, I had some positives and some negatives with this case. Though, truth be told, the negatives were due more to my quirks as opposed to with the case. First the positives, the case is just that—a case. It protects the iPad and the front folds back nicely for use when reading or playing. It looks really nice, it is well made both in terms of the leather and the construction (stitching). And the case is clean, what I mean is that it does not have any logo or stamp or anything of any kind. In fact, other than the leather there is the stitching and then a small circular disk that lined up with the back of the iPad to help keep it in place in the case. Otherwise there are access holes for all of the important items to include the speaker, dock, volume, headphone and power switch. One bad with the access holes, they do not always lineup perfectly and that made it harder than I would have liked to attach the sync cable. That is a small issue and one that is my issue. Moving past that and to the only other issue that I can find, the case is made from a really light leather, hence the Nude Beauty name and that makes spots and stains much easier to see. For example, I bumped mine with an ink pen, and instant ink spot. Granted, this was my problem and mistake, but personally I prefer something a little darker for these types or goof ups. That said, there is also a model available in black. Of course, going with the black would cover the natural beauty of this case, and while I feel a little strange saying that (and this)—part of the appeal to the Nude Beauty model is that—enjoying the leather which tends to show minor marks and color changes as time goes on.

The bottom line

If you like a natural leather look, want a folio style case and have an extra $80 laying around then this is probably a good option to at least consider. I have used this case off and on for a few months now and can say it is durable, protects the iPad well and perhaps more important—is really nice looking. Plus it has that nice leather smell.

Sony plans on releasing an e-reader app for Android and iOS

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Sony Reader mobile app

Sony should have done this a long time ago, not only because Amazon and others have done it, but also because it could be a good way of promoting its Sony Reader device as well as driving up interests and eventually sales for the Sony Reader stores. The Sony Reader app for Android and iOS devices will be ready by December.

The Sony Reader mobile app will come pre-loaded with some useful features including multi-platform access, access to bestsellers and new release, and the usual e-reader features such as - bookmarking, adding notesand highlights, adjusting fonts even while you read.

So there. Do you think Sony can spark new interes to its e-reader device as well as generate more sales from the Sony Reader e-book device? Would you be downloading the app once it hits the Android Market and Apple App Store?

Verizon is not getting a Windows Phone 7 handset this year

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

We recently saw what appeared to be good news for those waiting for a Windows Phone 7 handset to arrive with Verizon. The tweet came and mentioned that “WP7 devices will be rolling into Verizon stores this holiday season.”  Well, as it turns out, that is not going to be happening. According to a Verizon spokesperson, that tweet was “incorrect.” Simple and to the point. Furthermore, that tweet has since been deleted. Yup, deleted as if it never happened. That said, it was later followed up by another tweet from the @windowsphone account which was more based on information that we have heard in the past. You know, how Windows Phone 7 was going to be available with Verizon in 2011.

“Verizon is a valued partner and we look forward to seeing Windows Phone 7 devices in their stores in 2011.”

Best Buy: Wi-Fi only Samsung Galaxy Tab suffering from manufacturer delay

Despite the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab making an appearance in the latest Best Buy circular (with a $499.99 price point) it seems to have been delayed. The delay is noted as being a “manufacturer delay” and no word as to when it may be ready. Basically, it looks like the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab is not going to be available this month, maybe we can hope for December so it will squeak in before the holiday shopping season ends. Still, having already sold 600,000 3G equipped Tabs the numbers appear to be good. I wonder how many more are going to be added to that total once those who are waiting for the Wi-Fi only model to get a chance to make a purchase.

eBay updates it iPhone app, brings in barcode scanning for in-store comparison shopping

Section: Communications, Cellphones, VoIP, Mobile, Web, Websites

eBay mobile iphone app

If Amazon has just released its price comparison app for iPhone and iPod Touch in preparation for the Black Friday deals and other Holiday shopping gigs, eBay too is joining the party by updating its iPhone and iPod Touch app. The updated eBay iOS app is bringing in some good features for both eBay buyer and seller including - barcode scanning and a faster way for sellers to list their items.

Using RedLaser barcode-scanning technology, the updated eBay app bridges in-store and mobile shopping experience. This allows us to scan barcodes while in various stores and compare these prices with the prices offered by eBay sellers - hence giving us an informed decision when making a purchase. The app covers various merchandise such as electronics, movies, and videogames. What’s good about all this is that right after finding out that eBay has the same products available for a much lower price, you can order the products right there and then by using the eBay app.

If you’re an eBay seller, eBay mobile app lets you research ongoing sales trends, quickly list your items and manage them using your iOS device. You can also search for completed listings to find out what similar items were recently sold on eBay. Like when doing comparison check, eBay mobile also lets sellers scan their products and use the information yielded by the app for listing the products on eBay. This process takes only a minute or even less. For faster posting of some items which are already available on eBay, the app lets you use the “Sell One Like This” option. Listing your item through this option lets you populate your listing with information including category and item condition.

Other features of the updated eBay mobile app include - quick view, buyer protection, instant access to deals, quick PayPal payment option, saved searches, reminders, and pull-to-refresh. You can check out the eBay mobile video after the product link below.
