Dell Inspiron Duo shown off in video, should be "coming soon"

Section: Computers, Netbooks

Dell Inspiron Duo

The tablet market might be getting a bit crowded soon with all those Android tablets trying to compete with the iPad. Along with all those tablets, we keep hearing comments that the netbook market is dying. The Dell Inspiron looks to combine those two products with the Dell Inspiron Duo which has a new video to confirm that is is actually coming soon.

The video starts off just showing the tablet aspects of the Inspiron Duo, showing off the touchscreen interface and photos. The device is rested in a JBL dock, presumably for room-filling sound in addition to the digital picture frame it’s shown as. Then, of course, we’re shown that the screen flips over to reveal a standard 10-inch Windows 7 netbook. Not a bad trick at all. Should be a great device for college students (or anyone else, really) who might want a tablet, but need the physical keyboard for long-form writing.

It seems Dell wants the Inspiron Duo out by the end of the year, which is coming all too quickly. Hopefully the Duo can make it out in time without being too buggy. Forget the Streak, this could be Dell’s real tablet, if the interface is good enough. If nothing else, it’ll be Dell’s most interesting netbook, which is still something, right?

Leak: Motorola Droid Pro priced at $179 and Samsung Continuum priced at $199

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Motorola Droid Pro and Samsung Continuum pricing

Engadget received an image that details the pricing of several Android smartphones on Verizon Wireless—most notably, the Motorola Droid Pro and the Samsung Continuum.

Earlier today, we reported that Verizon Wireless would begin allowing pre-orders on the Droid Pro starting November 9 and extending until November 17.  Unfortunately, there was no mention of pricing with that information, but it now looks like the Droid Pro will be available for $179 on a two year agreement.  I’m sure the $179 price point comes with some sort of instant or Mail-in-Rebate, but there isn’t a mention of said rebate.

In addition, the Samsung Continuum, expected to be announced November 8 at Samsung’s special event, is marked with a $199 price, the standard for new high-end smartphones.  Naturally, we are still waiting on an official confirmation from Verizon on the prices for the Droid Pro and the Continuum.

Rumor: Motorola Droid 2 Global in blue to launch on November 11

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Motorola Droid 2 Global information

According to an image that looks like a flyer, the Motorola Droid 2 Global in blue will launch on November 11 for an unannounced price that is probably $199.  It’s important to note that the color specified is actually blue and not both blue and white.  It could be that Motorola is having trouble producing enough white models for a November 11 launch, similar to Apple’s debacle, or it could be that the white model looks very similar to the R2-D2 model and Verizon wants to hold off on two similar looking devices.

Either way, the Motorola Droid 2 Global is going to be released sometime soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is indeed November 11.  All that’s left now is an official confirmation from Verizon and a price tag.

Aliph brings Jawbone brand to portable speakers with the Jambox

Section: Audio, Portable Audio, Speakers

Aliph Jawbone Jambox

Aliph is known for its line of expensive bluetooth headsets. While they may be expensive, the headsets are also known to have good sound quality. It only make sense, then, that Aliph would consider bringing out a bluetooth speaker.

The Jawbone Jambox is Aliph’s first foray into the world of bluetooth speakers, but it doesn’t seem to stray too far from the company’s headset offerings. To start, the Jawbone Jambox is fairly expensive as far as bluetooth speakers go at $199. That’s even more than Monster Cable’s offering, which sells for $129. For that money you get a small, somewhat stylish box that measures 6x2.25x1.6-inches, and weighs just under a pound at 12 ounces. That small box will provide you with sound either through Bluetooth or 3.5mm headphone jack for eight to ten hours. There’s also a microphone in the Jambox, so you can also use it a speakerphone, which would probably sound better than the speakerphone in most phones.

The Jambox, like Aliph’s Jawbone Icon, can be updated via the MyTalk web platform. Those updates can include apps such as voice-to-SMS, Jott and voice dial.

Shopping for new computer?  Walt Mossberg says get an iPad

Section: Computers, Desktops, Mobile Computers, Laptops, Netbooks, Wireless

In today’s Wall Street Journal in an article titled, “A Fall Guide: How to Pick Your Next Computer” the venerable Walt Mossberg suggests a few machines worth considering.  The only item bolded and the first recommendation is Apple’s iPad tablet computer.  Could the iPad take a bigger bit out of computer sales than just netbooks?

Many owners of iPads, including me, are finding it handily replaces a laptop for numerous tasks, such as Web browsing, email, social-networking, photos, video and music. It has superior battery life, lighter weight, and it starts instantly.

In the section Tablets vs. Laptops, Mossberg mentions the laptop once, saying “it’s worth considering the iPad, which starts at $499, instead of a small laptop.  Laptops advantages over tablets are never discussed in the section.  Instead, the section reads more like an Apple advertisement than a comparison.

Walt couches the recommendation with cautions that the iPad is for light-duty use.  While he is careful to point out that he doesn’t recommend using the iPad to create long document, spreadsheets and presentations, points out the iPad is capable of handling all that and more.  What is interesting is where all the rah-rah iPad is located in the article.

To get beyond the discussion of the iPad (and briefly other tablets that are not out yet), one has to follow not just past the fold but onto the next page.  Essentially, for many news skimmers this equates to a boon for the iPad who may or may not make it to where Mossberg begins his discussion on netbooks, laptops and desktops.  Will users get the wrong idea about how much Mossberg likes the iPad?

What’s your take, is Mossberg pushing the iPad too hard?  Is the device capable of a much further upstream disturbance, say to desktops?  Let us know in the comments.

Toshiba now shipping Froyo Tablet

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Netbooks, Wireless

Today, Toshiba began shipping it’s new Folio 100 tablet packing Froyo to customers in Europe.  With a 10.1” capacative touchscreen, the unit is expected to compete directly with Apple’s iPad.  The word from Toshiba is this unit will not be making the leap across the pond to the US.

The Folio 100 sells for €399.  Our Shawn Ingram laid the specs out when Toshiba unvieled the unit at IFA in Germany, “the Folio 100 is a 10.1-inch Android tablet, running on an Nvidia Tegra 2.  It runs on Froyo with a custom skin laid on top of it, which doesn't look too bad.  For specs, the Folio 100 has 16 GB of storage (exapandle with the card reader), a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, Blueooth, HDMI, and a USB port.  Unfortunately, the battery is only supposed to last for 7 hours with 65% web browsing, 10% video playback, and 25% standby.  That's not much compared to the iPad.  While comparing the Folio 100 to the iPad, while the iPad has a 1024x768 display, the Folio 100 only has 1024x600 basically the same sort of display you'd expect to find on a cheap netbook.”

The biggest detractor for the unit, as far as we are concerned is the lack of access to the Android Market.  The unit appears to only be able to access Toshiba’s own store which it promises to stock the latest and greatest.  According to commenters that have purchased the unit, Flash isn’t ready for it yet.

Maybe that was why LG is holding back it’s tablet too?

LG: Free apps every 2 months with WP7

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

LG and Microsoft team up for shower owners with free appsLG and Microsoft are teaming up to make their Windows Phone offering just a little sweeter.  Customers who buy an LG Windows Phone 7 unit will receive 10 free apps every 60 days.  Microsoft claims this is an over $30 value.

Microsoft is working with developers on this and by getting on the freebie list, will help gain publicity and the potential to drive sales.  It would appear that after the 60 days, the apps would return to their original price.  It’s a decent move for both LG, Microsoft and potentially for developers; exposure is a good thing.

Should it factor into your decision to purchase a Windows Mobile phone?  Meh.  We believe finding a phone whose mechanics work for you: a comfortable keyboard (hard or soft), something that feels good in your hands, buttons you can easily push.  Free apps are nice but a phone you don’t have to struggle with is far superior, in our book.

Facebook is focusing on mobile, but not building a mobile phone

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Facebook had their mobile event yesterday, and there was new versions of mobile apps released and talk of the fabled Facebook phone. Well, truth be told not so much talk of the Facebook phone, but a clear no. According to Mark Zuckerberg;

“There’s been this rumor going around that Facebook is going to build a phone. No.”

And honestly, with Facebook available on as many mobile phones as it already is, I have to ask—do we really need a Facebook phone? I have to say, no.

Verizon's "Iconic Device" is the Motorola Droid Pro, not the iPhone

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon's

Either Verizon has something much fancier sounding in terms of the launch of the iPhone or they are never going to launch it. Personally I am opting for the latter. That aside though, a screen capture of an internal Verizon Wireless system recently began circulating with mention of an “iconic device” coming on November 9th. On top of that, it was described as “projected to be in high demand once officially announced.” And well, naturally people began to assume it was the iPhone. Hey, it does sound plausible, however that turns out to have not been the case—the iconic device is going to be the Motorola Droid Pro. The Droid Pro name turned up in another recent Verizon screen capture which tips a November 9th pre-sale with a November 18th launch date. So no, Verizon is not launching the iPhone. Well, unless they have two iconic devices coming.

Panasonic makes the Lumix DMC-GF2 Micro Four Thirds camera official, ships on January 2011

Section: Imaging, Camcorders, Digital Cameras

Panasonic Lumix GF2

Panasonic has just made my decision on what digital camera to purchase, easier. I was keen on getting either the Lumix LX5 or the Lumix GF1, and then this announcement came out. The next shooter on Panasonic’s GF series will be out and ready by January 2011. That’s barely two months from now. I’m not really sure if I can hold on until its release because I’m already disposing my Canon 40 DSLR in lieu of a lighter and advanced point-and-shoot in the likes of the Canon G12, Panasonic Lumix LX5 and GF1.

So, if you’re like me who is just planning to get your next digital shooter and the Panasonic Lumix GF1 happens to be one your option, you might want to hold off your buying instinct and wait for January 2011. Why would you bear such agony? Because the Lumix GF2 promises more advanced features than the Lumix GF1. And although the camera’s market price was not yet announced, I’m pretty sure it will not be too far from the introductory price of the Lumix GF1 when it was first released.

And what would you get for exercising your patience? How about an interchangeable lens system camera which is Panasonic’s smallest and lightest to date. It also features a high 12.1MP Live MOS sensor and is compatible with the Lumix G 12.5mm/F12 3D interchangeable lens. Design-wise, the Lumix GF2 is lighter than its predecessor and packs in a 3-inch touchpanel, contrast AF system, touch Q user interface, video recording for capturing video at 1920x1080/601 or 1280x720/50p in AVCHD. That’s HD video quality for you folks.

Other notable features of the Panasonic Lumix GF2 include - 23-area focusing system, ISO range from 100 to 6400, Venus Engine FHD that enables Intelligent Resolution Technology, an efficient dust reduction system, and my Color mode with 8 preset effects that you can apply to your photos.

The Panasonic Lumix GF2 micro four thirds camera will come with 14mm F2.5 lens kit and 14-42mm Zoom Lens Kit. It will be available in black, silver, white and red models. So, take your pick and check out whether Panasonic is already accepting pre-orders. If not, some more patience will be needed.

Verizon Wireless to begin Motorola Droid Pro pre-sales on November 9th

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon officially announced the Motorola Droid Pro back in early-October and since then they have remained fairly quite on the topic. But the good news is that looks like it will soon be changing. According to a recent screen capture from an internal Verizon system, the Motorola Droid Pro will go up for pre-sale beginning on November 9th. Furthermore, the pre-sale will run from the 9th through the 17th and then the official launch will come on the 18th. Interestingly enough, the Motorola Droid Pro looks like it will be shipped out ahead of the official launch date for those who pre-order. According to the details given, the pre-ordered devices will begin shipping as early as November 10th so the customer “will receive their order prior to the launch date.” And for those who may have missed the Motorola Droid Pro announcement altogether, this is the new style of Android device, the one that has a 3.1 inch touchscreen display with a full hardware QWERTY keyboard sitting below ala BlackBerry style. Other features of the Droid Pro include a 1GHz processor, 2GB internal storage, 2GB microSD card, 1420 mAh battery, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and Android 2.2 Froyo.

AUO presenting the 14-inch solar-powered touch keyboard notebook

Section: Computers, Laptops

AUO presenting the 14-inch solar-powered touch keyboard notebook

AU Optronics has introduced a 14-inch, solar powered touch keyboard solution for netbooks. What this new device basically boils down to is a touchscreen display that has been mounted onto a solar panel. The AUO product will be released alongside 10.1 and 15.6-inch models. In addition, the netbooks will come withglasses-free 3D panels. The best part about this feature is that the 3D and non-3D modes can work concurrently on the same display without you having to adjust to specific angles. Seeing as how the whole television market is in an uproar about the new “3D” era, it seems wise that AUO looks to bring the same reaction to the laptop world.

The solar panel built inside of the notebook’s cover and keyboard allows it to absorb both electric and solar energy. This in turn decreased the amount of electricity used by roughly 20% for added play time. The keyboard has also been designed to be transparent for ease of finger movement. The new device, which is dated for a Q3 2011 launch, will be featured in the upcoming FPD International held on November 10-12 in Chiba, Japan. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to tell you to start saving up for this one now.

Samsung Galaxy Tab with Bell, tipped for November 16th arrival with $649.95 price tag

We had already known that the Samsung Galaxy Tab was heading to Bell Mobility, however at the time we only knew that it was coming soon as Bell chose not to announce a price or release date. Well, flash forward till today and we are learning that the Galaxy Tab may come available on November 16th and arrive sporting a $649.95 price tag. The one word of caution though, this has not come from Bell, but instead a product listing over at The Source. That said, while there is no guarantee that this information is accurate, the fact they have since removed the listing leads one to believe it is the real deal. Bottom line, it looks like it is time for Bell to officially let the pricing and release information out.

Facebook app not announced for the iPad because "the iPad isn't mobile"

Section: Apple, Computers, Mobile Computers, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Yesterday was the big Facebook announcement and a few goodies that came out included a new and welcomed update for Android devices as well as an update in terms of the iPhone app. And similar to the other times an iPhone app update was released, there was a groan from iPad users in that an iPad specific or even a universal app available. Well, it turns out that an iPad app was not announced because yesterdays event was a mobile event and according to Zuckerberg, “the iPad isn’t mobile.” Personally I am not sure I fully agree, while it may not be a mobile phone the iPad still should qualify as mobile. Anyway, here is to hoping that something comes in the future, but at least in the meantime iPad users have apps such as Social and Friendly for their Facebook-app-on-the-iPad needs.
