SamsungMobileUS Tweet

Samsung effectively confirmed previous rumors of the expected launch date for the Samsung Continuum: November 11.  Just before the special event, Samsung revealed through its Twitter account that the Continuum will launch on Verizon Wireless on November 11, in just three short days.

The unique Android smartphone with a dual display will join the Samsung Fascinate as the second Galaxy S smartphone on Verizon.  It would be logical to assume pricing and other important specs will be announced at the Samsung event later today.

Google's gift to holiday flyers: free in-flight WiFi

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Wireless

Free in-flight WiFi from Google Chrome

Last year for the holidays Google offered free in-flight WiFi to travelers on domestic Virgin America flights. This year Google is offering the same deal, but to a few more airlines.

If you’re flying anytime between November 20, 2010 and January 2, 2011 you may have a chance to get that free WiFi. This year Google has partnered to offer the free service to flyers on AirTran, Delta and Virgin America. The WiFi is still the same Gogo service, but now that service is brought to you by Google Chrome. Google is urging those who take advantage of the free WiFi to try out Chrome, even if just for the length of the flight.

It is worth noting that last year’s plan gave free WiFi to several airports as well, so while Google landed more partnerships with airlines this year, you won’t get the same free WiFi in the airport. Last year’s plan also lasted a bit longer: November 10 to January 15. Perhaps Google decided to cut the deal short this year, as last year the free service included the dates of CES, which meant that all the technology journalists traveling to Las Vegas got unlimited free WiFi on the flight, and while they were waiting for the flights.

Still, free in-flight WiFi is always a good thing, even if it saddens me that I’ll be stuck paying for the service when I fly out just a few days after the deal ends.

Execs still optimistic on 3D -It's gonna be huge

Section: Video, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV, Video Providers

The 3D revolution will be televised.  That’s the word from a conference held last week on how 3D is pushing its way into our cultural mainstream.  As proof, the conference pointed to six of the top ten movies of 2010 were 3D movies.

And it looks like more will be as the number of theaters opening up to 3D are increasing.  From 8,000 when Avatar was released to over 30,000 (world-wide) by the next summer, the industry sees 3D as the future of public digital displays.  3D is catching on, but not just in theaters near you.

Major television programmers including CBS, DirecTV, Discovery Communications, and ESPN presented their visions for and development of dedicated 3D channels. Ken Aagaard of CBS Sports, which recently shot the U.S. Open Tennis tournament in 3D, noted that once company executives saw 3D, they were deeply impressed.

“We were amazed at the buy rates for 3D versions of the Masters and auto racing,” added Comcast Senior Vice President, Mark Hess.

Is 3D the new must-have that HDTV once was?  Or is it an over-reach by TV companies to justify the over-capcity created by the HD surge?  The industry knows it may take time, but it appears ready to play the long game for 3D.

NYC school gets free 4G -WiMAX - aims at advancing smart parking

Section: Communications, Computers, Networking, Wireless

NYU Poly gets free WiMAX 4G and works on parking problemThe FCC granted Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) a license to use WiMAX (also claimed to be 4G) aiming to help innovation from the school.  On the first day WiMAX was turned on in the city, the school beamed data captured by roving cars to locate parking spots, filled and unfilled.  The researchers claimed the higher speeds of 4G helped to make their mapping as close to real-time as possible.

“The WiMAX network will allow NYU-Poly to accelerate our contributions to cooperative networking and advance the leading research conducted at NYU-Poly’s Center for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications, one of the State of New York’s original Centers for Advanced Technology, as well as the Wireless Internet Center for Advanced Technology, funded by the NSF,” said Shivendra Panwar, director of both centers. “It will prove particularly helpful in helping us design and develop standards for cooperative networking, a technology that promises to greatly increase the reliability and speed of wireless communication.”

The school envisions equipping cars with 4G radios that will transmit their location in exchange for access to open parking spots and transit notifications.  While that concept is interesting, it puts the onus on drivers - we can’t even get all car owners to go hands-free.  The technology exists to figure this out, but we seem a bit off from making this a reality.

Amazon begins the holiday push, offers up two new Kindle commercials [Video]

Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks

In true holiday season, Amazon has kicked things off with a few new Kindle commercials. They are both of the 30 second made for television variety and as much as I hate to say it—make me wish I had a regular Kindle again. With that, feel free to check out the commercials below and as much as we hate to say anything bad about the Kindle (it is a favorite device of some of the Gadgetell crew) we do have to say that those older stop motion style commercials were a little more fun to watch. But then again, these latest show just how small and light the Kindle is and that is a sure plus for those reading on other devices such as the iPad.

Why are Windows Phone selling out?

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile

Does Microsoft have a hit on its hands with the new Windows Phone 7?  Reports are flowing in from Europe that the phone is sold out from many carriers citing underestimated demand.  Could it be that Windows Mobile OS users have been in hiding since the last release, waiting for the next update or has Microsoft done a decent job in hyping their new OS?

The answer looks to be somewhat less than what we’d guess.  It seems to be a supply issue.  And Microsoft won’t be the only one to feel this heat.

Launched on October 21 in Europe and Asia, the timing comes at the worse time possible for Microsoft.  As they push the new device, it is usually a bad thing if consumers can’t get devices they desire.  Temptation to pick up something that is available is just too high.

Mobile carriers in Europe are experiencing a shortage of Windows Phone 7 devices due to manufacturing issues, seattlepi.com has learned. And the worldwide problem will likely affect Microsoft’s U.S. launch, which starts Monday.

As we mentioned, Microsoft won’t be the only one to have supply issues.  We expect to see out-of-stock notices for many popular devices for the next few months as manufacturers scramble to fill orders.

LG Vortex to launch with Verizon as a free-on-contract smartphone

Though we are still awaiting the official word on this one, it looks like the LG Vortex is going to launch with Verizon for free. And yes, that is free on a two-year agreement. Furthermore, the free comes after a mail-in-rebate, which is for $100. In other words, you will have to pay $100 to actually get the phone, but at the same time you are ultimately paying nothing. And sure, the Vortex is not a super high-end device but it does have Android 2.2 along with a 3.2 inch display, 3 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and a 600MHz processor. Lastly, the latest rumored release date for the LG Vortex is November 11th.

Wooden cell phone goes into production

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

Sharp's Touch Wood phone moved from concept into production with domestic Japanese cypress timber

Shown off as a concept in 2009, Sharp and NTT DoCoMo are bringing the cell phone made from wood to market.  The good-looking curvy smartphone will merit a run of 15,000 units made of cypress timber.  The phone carries the name the Touch-Wood.

The project highlights use of domestic wood from Japan.  The wood is surplus from reforestation projects in the country and is molded into shapes.  The wood is water-resistant and very durable.  Each unit will feature a unique wood grain.

We’ve seen bamboo and other woods used in netbook construction.  Could we see a wave of phones featuring materials besides plastic and aluminum?

Samsung Continuum user manual posted, price gets re-confirmed for $199 on-contract

The never ending stream of Samsung Continuum information continues to flow. As of this morning we have the complete user manual and a further confirmation of the pricing. The user manual was, and remains posted on the Verizon website and can be downloaded and read in its entirety, that is if you are into that sort of thing. Furthermore, the price seems to have once again been confirmed at $199. Of course, that $199 comes after a $100 mail-in-rebate and along with a two-year agreement. In other words, expect to pay $299 on the day of purchase. With that, we still need something official in terms of a release date, but as the user manual has been posted officially on the Verizon website, that should not be all that much longer of a wait. Personally I am interested in checking out this whole second display “ticker” setup. Sounds like a nice way to get glance-able information without needing to turn on the regular display.

Dell Venue Pro smartphone available with Microsoft retail stores today & with Dell on November 15th

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

While we knew that there was three Windows Phone 7 devices launching today, it looks like we may also have a fourth. Sadly though, the additional device will be available only in select channels as of today. The device is the Dell Venue Pro and it is said to be coming available by way of Microsoft as of today and then by way of Dell on November 15th. The good and bad with this is that thankfully the 15th is not all that far away and the bad is that being available with Microsoft means at the retail stores, which are limited in numbers and in-turn locations. Bottom line, most who are choosing to go Windows Phone 7 with the Dell Venue Pro are going to be waiting until the 15th. With that, the handset is going to be compatible with T-Mobile and features a 4.1 inch display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera and portrait style slider keyboard.
