| | Section: Computers, Netbooks Dell has made good on it’s promise by putting the Inspiron Duo up for sale before the holidays. Here we are just a few days before Thanksgiving, and we can finally pre-order the netbook that converts to a tablet. The only issue is we don’t know when those pre-orders will arrive. If you simply can’t wait to get the Dell Inspiron Duo you can pre-order it now from the Microsoft Store for $549. Considering the fact that the Duo packs the new dual-core Intel Atom N550, and has the slipping screen, it’s not a bad price at all. To make it better, you don’t have to go hunting for a Microsoft store to buy the device like Dell’s recent smartphone the Venue Pro. Pre-orders will get the device shipped for free if you’re willing to wait the 3-7 business days for UPS to deliver it. The Microsoft Store also has the JBl speaker dock for sale. While it was at one point $49.99, the dock is now going for $99.99. The dock should ship alongside the Inspiron Duo, whenever that is. In fact, the Galaxy Tab has already sold 600,000 times worldwide, exhausting supplies of the device in several locations. In addition, in Korea (where Samsung is based) the Android tablet has already sold 30,000 times in just a week. I’m sure the fact that the Galaxy Tab being available on all four major carriers in the United States (with AT&T launching theirs today) certainly helps accumulate sales. Of course, the fact that it is launching so close to the holidays definitely plays a role in how many are being purchased, but 600,000 is still a great number for Samsung. The Novel, for those who may have forgotten is an eReader with a 9-inch color display. The Novel comes touting features to include a resistive touchscreen display, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and 2GB of internal storage. And in addition to ereading, the Novel will also support audio, video and digital image files. As for the ereading support, that comes in the form of Barnes & Noble. The Pandigital novel is selling for $213.80 with $9.72 for shipping and handling. And on top of that QVC is throwing in a 4GB microSD card for storage. Lastly, similar to many other QVC purchases you can take care of this with “Easy Pay!” which means you can make four installments of $53.45. You know, just in case you like to make four small payments instead of one large. And guess what, if you hit that order button, you’d receive your Jolibook by Monday, November 29. How’s that for an early Christmas treat? Well, that’s of course if you’re willing to spend around $446 exclusive of Amazon shipping. Specs-wise, we already know that the Jolibook will have a 10.1-inch 1024x600 display, an Intel Atom N550 processor, 1GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, 0.3MP webcam, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and 6-cell battery which can last up to 7 hours of continous usage. For its OS of course, it’s none other than Jolicloud 1.1. After all, the device had hit the available lineup without even a mention from Verizon. Well, they have mentioned it now, and strangely it was still not in the form of a press release, but just a brief blurb on Facebook. “Now make calls, text, email and browse the web in more than 220 countries with Droid 2 Global. Get it now for $199.99. $299.99 2yr price less $100 mail-in rebate debit card. New 2yr activation and data pak required.” In the end though, given the frequent use of Twitter and Facebook by Verizon (and other wireless carriers) I guess we should not be all that surprised to see the one and only Droid 2 Global mention come in this way. At present it will only run on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 as well as the 3rd and 4th generation iPod touch. Furthermore it requires iOS 4.1. That said, the game is a universal app meaning that it will be compatible with the iPad, well, it will be compatible once Apple releases iOS 4.2. Otherwise, it is LEGO and it is Harry Potter. In other words, it sounds like a fun game, sadly though I cannot actually tell you if it is fun because I am stuck waiting on 4.2. LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 brings the world of LEGO® Harry Potter to life on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, giving gamers the power to play with LEGO characters and models in a brand new way. Based on the first four Harry Potter books and movies, LEGO® Harry Potter: Years 1-4 builds on the foundations of previous LEGO® videogames by offering a mix of fun, accessible gameplay and light-hearted humor – appealing to all ages. The new plan doesn’t come without downsides for those who still want to have their discs, however. In matching Netflix’s Canadian plan, the streaming-only option for the US costs $7.99 per month. That gives you unlimited access to Netflix’s streaming movies and TV shows. Remember, however, that not all content that Netflix has access to is on Watch Instantly. The streaming library has been growing quite a bit, but US customers still lack some of the content that was announced for the Canadian launch. So with a streaming-only option you lose access to recent movies and TV shows like Superbad and Mad Men which were both promised for the Canadian launch, and are nowhere to be found in the American Watch Instantly site. For those who still want to access movies from Netflix that may not be on Watch instantly, you still can. The price for plans that includes discs, however has been increased. It’s not by much, however, just $1 extra for the one and two disc plans. For each other plan the extra cost is $1 per disc. So the base disc plan is now $9.99 a month, while two discs cost $14.99 per month and three discs are now $19.99 every month. Of course, Blu-ray discs still cost extra, with the price varying according to your plan. For one disc plans it adds $2, while adding $3 and $4 to two and three disc plans, respectively. Before the Orb came along I wouldn’t have believe it: $70 seems way to cheap given that Sonos charges a few hundred for this functionality and 5 minutes is often how long it takes to open consumer electronics packaging. In just 4 steps I was able to get my music library streaming through my home-theater speakers: - I downloaded Orb Caster and set it up on my Mac.
- I plugged in the Orb Music puck (it is actually smaller than a hockey puck) into my computer and went through a quick install process.
- I moved the Orb puck to my home theater, connecting it to power and a 1/8” audio jack.
- I downloaded the Orb Controller on my iPhone and ipad (it works on an iPod Touch and Android too)
Looking at this as four steps actually makes it seam more complicated than it was. Upon set-up Orb Caster begins indexing my music library on your computer and then broadcasts this to your mobile device (via WiFi) to control the Orb. Not only can you navigate through your computer music library but you can also tap into your Pandora or streaming Sirius account. The coolest part is that as along as you are within the same WiFi network (802.11b/g/n) you can move the Orb around from stereo to stereo (living room, bedroom, out by the pool, even a portable speaker). As you looks to gifts for audio lovers over this holiday season I urge you to consider the Orb. For $70 you can’t go wrong. It lets you compare product in-store prices offered by various merchants as against Amazon’s prices for the same products. The app lets you scan a barcode, snap a picture or say or type a product name, then it will give you prices for those items from Amazon.com and other online merchants. From there, you would be able to do one-click purchase and have it delivered to your home. Price Check iPhone app is pretty simple to use. While inside a brick-and-mortar store and you’ve stumbled upon a great product that you want to purchase, you simply scan the product’s barcode and then the app will display prices from lowest to highest. The app also gives you eligibility of the product for free shipping so that you can decide right there and then whether you’d purchase the product from the store or ordered it online via Amazon instead. The app covers millions of products including HDTVs, baby strollers, geek gadgets and more. Personally, mine still has not been given the option to record. That said, it is simple enough, once in a call you can hit the button and record the phone call that you happen to be on. Of course, this is the same as you can already do when making a Google Voice call with a regular phone and hitting the number 4 option.
