Verizon Wireless Comparison Chart LG Vortex

Earlier today we heard that the LG Vortex has a good chance of launching on November 18 on Verizon Wireless.  The 18th is a little bit less than two weeks away and we haven’t heard a whole lot in terms of specs about the LG Vortex, but fortunately, a leaked comparison chart gives some information on the latest Android smartphone from LG.  For starters, it is billed as an “Affordable Android 2.2 smartphone” which tells us it runs Android 2.2 and is probably a mid-range device aimed for customers who don’t want to spend $199 on the latest and greatest Android smartphone.  In addition, i t has a 3.2 inch touch screen, a 3.2MP camera, and is pre-loaded with Swype.  We’ll probably have to wait a little bit longer to find out pricing for the Vortex.

Select T-Mobile retail stores receive iPhone cable in anticipation of an iPhone launch?

Section: Apple, Communications, Accessories, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

iPhone/iPod Charger Cable T-Mobile

It is no secret T-Mobile USA would like to launch the iPhone on its network to help boost sluggish sales, yet with AT&T exclusivity and Verizon dubbed as the next American carrier to launch the popular device, T-Mobile seems like the underdog.  However, it is being reported that several T-Mobile retail stores are receiving an iPod and iPhone charger and sync cable for resale, but why?

T-Mobile does support customers who unlock the iPhone and request to use T-Mobile service, so T-Mobile could be selling the iPhone cable just out of convenience to its customers; but chances are people who have an unlocked iPhone already have a cable.  It could also mean that T-Mobile is getting ready to launch the iPhone, but that seems like wishful thinking to me.  No one knows exactly why T-Mobile is stocking the charger & sync cable, but hopefully we find out the answer soon.

Verizon Droid users being invited to "Android Smartphone Workshop"

Verizon Droid users being invited to Android Smartphone Workshop

It looks like Verizon is getting ready to have an Android workshop. The event, which seems to simply be dubbed as the “Android Smartphone workshop” is a virtual event that is set to take place on November 8th at 11am and is free to attend. As for what will be happening, Verizon mentions that you will learn tips and tricks about your phone as well as discover apps and find out how to better your battery life. And if you were one of those (myself included) who did not get a message notification from Verizon, you can head on over to www.verizonwireless.com/wirelessworkshops to learn more. That said, we have to wonder if the November 8th date was chosen for a reason because while it could be a simple coincidence, it does coincide nicely with the Samsung event.

Pop Cap Games to release Plants vs. Zombies & Peggle for Android in "early 2011"

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Gaming, Mobile

Pop Cap Games to release Plants vs. Zombies & Peggle for Android in early 2011 I would never consider myself a big gamer, but I do love the casual games such as Bejeweled, Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies and can get lost for hours playing those. Thankfully though, we have a sister site—Gamertell and they are much more up on the topic—not only dealing with casual but regular gaming. That said, after browsing around over there looking for a good game to gift a friend I found this sweet news—Pop Cap Games is planning to launch both Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies on the Android platform sometime in early 2011. Great, and while I kind of mean that I think it comes more as sarcasm because it really means more of my time will be wasted.

Microsoft: Copy and Paste to come to WP7 "in a matter of weeks"

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Samsung Focus One major complaint against WP7 is the fact that it is going to launch without the ability to copy and paste text.  In fact, back in mid October, a Microsoft executive claimed the update for copy and paste would be rolled out in early 2011 along with other updates.  Today, Arpan Shah, Microsoft's Director of Microsoft Project, had this to say about copy and paste and the lack of apps for the mobile OS:

Critics have commented on the lack of specific features like copy & paste and lack of 100s of thousands of applications. And while both are true, copy & paste will be available as an update in a matter of weeks (early 2011) and as for applications, it's just a matter of time.

Since he uses the rods “in a matter of weeks” it would be safe to assume that the update will come sometime in January and hopefully not any later than that.

Well, it looks like the crew over at the Android Community blog have put that to the test. Check out the video below…

Google adds five new themes for Gmail users

Google has offered up some new options in terms of Gmail themes. The new additions, of which there are five in total include Basic Black, Basic White, Tree Tops, Marker and Android. Of course, being the geek, I promptly switched mine from the Night Shade that I was using to Android. Then again, the Marker theme is pretty cool looking, that is if you are into the coloring slightly out of the lines and using highlighter kind of look. That said, to change your theme head on over to Gmail and then click Settings (upper right) -> Themes and then pick your favorite.

Wi-Fi only Samsung Galaxy Tab release delayed until after the holidays

While we knew a Wi-Fi only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab was coming we were never entirely sure when it would arrive. Well, we are still unsure of an exact release date, however it looks like it will not be coming until sometime early in 2011. The details are coming courtesy of Best Buy and are simple and to the point, the “Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi version has been delayed (Post Holiday).” And there you have it, those waiting to grab a Galaxy Tab and not have to worry about a two year carrier commitment can sit tight for a while. Or for those who feel the need to have now, you can always pick one up from Verizon for $599 and just not use the 3G portion as that comes month-to-month anyway. I guess it comes down to how bad you want it and how much you are willing to pay to have it now.

Search faster on your iPhone or Android devices with Google Instant

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google

Google Instant for iOS and Android

Finally, Google has enabled its recently released search feature, Google Instant for iPhone and Android phones. In case you’ve already forgot about this Google search feature, it’s basically an enhancement of your usual search experience wherein Google does not only display search results predictions but actual search results as you type. It was pretty helpful when doing your search on your desktop but, yeah I guess it will also be more useful when you’re doing your search on your mobile phones.

You can try Google Instant beta on your iPhone or Android devices by simply pointing your mobile web browser to http://google.com. According to Google, Google Instant is currently available only for devices in the U.S. But all you have to do is to make sure that your web browser is on the said Google site and not on the localized version. Once on the Google search site, you can see simply click on the “Turn on” link just below the search box. Once you start typing your search term, you’d see the suggested search results. You can skip on these search results by pressing the search button and the actual results for your search term will be displayed.

Google Instant works on devices running iOS 4.2 and Android 2.2. To learn how it works, watch the demo after the read link below.

Samsung: All Galaxy S users to receive Froyo starting today through the end of November

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Samsung UK Mobile Tweet

According to a tweet from Samsung UK Mobile’s Twitter account, all Galaxy S users should receive the coveted Android 2.2 update starting today and throughout the rest of November.  Even though Samsung states “everyone will have it,” we are not sure whether everyone includes American Galaxy S owners or simply European Galaxy S owners.  At the very least, it’s nice to see Samsung finally pushing out the latest version of Android out to each and every Galaxy S smartphone, as one of the few complaints against the Galaxy S has always been the lack of Froyo.  Whether the OTA update includes American owners will remain to be seen.

Here is the text of the tweet:

Froyo starts rolling out today; everyone will have it by the end of Nov. To prepare, get the latest version of Kies http://bit.ly/cfjJDa
